Almost all backpackers and campers have the same problem, what to do with partially used fuel canisters. Enter Flipfuel. This ingenious device allows you to transfer fuel between canisters. I came across this backpacking gadget last year and it found it to be extremely helpful, as I have dozens of partially filled canisters littering my garage. This has help me reduce my clutter, get empty canisters recycled, and make sure I never pack a halfie again.
In this video I go backpacking with Eric Flottman, the founder of Flipfuel. Since we both live in Arizona, we decided to go backpacking in the Superstition Mountains just outside of Phoenix, AZ.

Following all the backpacker TH-camrs, your films definitely hold the crown for cinematography. Weaving the adventure, nature, camaraderie and gear together is so artfully done as well.
Well shucks, thank you so much! That's definitely the side I try to bring. So glad you see it that way!
Telling me I have a problem and that you are the one to save me is the same grift Donald Trump is currently running. Hit the thumbs down on this grifter and please don't send Trump your money.

Have heard of the Flip Fuel device briefly once or twice, thought it was a cool idea but never pursued it. Thanks to you I just bought two--one for me and one for a friend who I know will love it. Thanks!
Great! Enjoy! They're cool devices.
Love the focus on the trip over the gear. Sweet B roll.
Thank you! Definitely wanted it to be an adventure for people and not only a gear talk video.
What does b roll mean?
What time of year was this?
And what camera are you using? The video is just amazing! Really stands head and shoulders above the typical action camera stuff! Thank you!
@@ggs0605 Thank you very much! I try to be cinematic. As to your other question, b roll is a filmmaking term. "A roll" is the actual story driving footage, b roll is the supporting footage. For example a shot of running water or a plant with cool light on it.
As always, your video and combination of actual noise and music are excellent. Thank you. Colorado Girl
haha, when you say noise, do you mean me talking?! JK, thanks!
This valve works great!!!! Game changer, every hiker should have one.
Yup! I'm a big fan.
Thanks Eric's , I have been using a Flipfuel for 2 yrs now and love it. Thanks for solving a big problem with using canisters stoves. The trail was beautiful.
Glad to hear it! I like hearing from people who've been using these and enjoying them.
Bought one a few months back. Awesome product. Solves a common problem for a lot of backpackers. Thanks for getting this out there Eric.
Love that he is a Scoutmaster teaching this. I am a soon to be former Cubmaster as my second boy has moved to the troop and now I have two there. Cubs was family car camping style and the troop is working on you will carry all you need so make sure you need it. My older one weighs just over 80lbs and he puts his 55l pack on it dwarfs him. He is learning to figure out what he needs and next year is going out for a high adventure camp that those ounces count.
I love the perspective he brings as a scout master. And yeah, a 55L pack on an 80 pound body is wild! But that's the way of it.
Love hearing your scouting story. Priority number one with the new scouts is that they have a good time. Make sure his hip belt fits snug and that he doesn't carry too much weight. The rest usually falls in place naturally.
It was cool running into you guys at the spring, thanks for being so genuine and continuing to inspire us all to get outside and enjoy the wonder.
It was nice meeting you. Hope you had a great trip.
Are you the one questioning the water filter? That was so funny!
I love these outings with others. Really well filmed and I enjoy the banter. Appreciate the channel.
Very cool seeing a trip out in the Superstitions! Awesome shots of Weaver’s Needle.
Thank you! Such a cool pocket of mountains.
YOU’RE MAKING ME HOMESICK FOR ARIZONA! I was born and raised there, but have been gone since ‘95. My parents still live there so I come back regularly and I have driven past Weaver’s Needle hundreds of times, but have never seen it from the other side like that. Pretty cool, so thanks for this video. Actually, growing up I was always afraid of hiking in the Superstitions after hearing all of the horror storied of hikers getting lost or going missing.
Beautiful work, I really like them both. 😍 Thank you for sharing. 😊
Great vid. Enjoyed the interview, gear, and scenery. Look forward to hearing what you think of that Durston pack!!!
Been looking for something like this that didn't look like it was going to explode in my face the first time I used it, just ordered one now. Plus point: he comes across as an absolute top lad.
Eric is a great guy! Enjoy the unit!
Awesome video! Been eyeing a flipfuel for a while. I pulled the trigger once I heard the backstory. Love your content!
Luv this vid, like how the music fades in and out…nice balance. I bought my Flip Fuel through GGG, but haven’t used it yet. Thanks to both Erics. 😊
My best “poo”…Pictured Rocks on an open vault toilet and a deer walks by and locks eyes. Think that’s 3 or 4 points, those that know will know.
Pictured Rocks is so cool! And it's definitely 4 points when you make eye contact with wildlife :)
Keep putting out this content! Videos like this really get me pumped up for trips!
heck yeah! Will do!
That looks like an amazing hike. Flip fuel is really easy to use
Cool video and the views were amazing. I like the music choices it really adds to the experience of watching. I often tell my wife I wish that the music would play while we’re hiking .It would be cool to happen up on a AWSOME overlook and some adventurous dramatic music start playing. Enjoy your channel thanks for bring us along.
Got one myself. Thanks for giving us the back story. I'm an ASM myself and lead monthly scout backpacking trip. I'll be sure to recommend that piece of gear.
Just noticed the flip fuel in our scout shop. Had no idea the company owner is also a scouter!
He's a great guy! His experience with the Scouts is pretty cool.
Which Scout shop? We brought them into the Indy store about 2 months ago after I used it for about 6 months. I’m curious what other Scout shops are carrying it.
@@Team5TLIt was Indy.
One of my favorite videos of yours. Very interesting…also love the foodie ideas!! The views are spectacular!
aww thank you! I appreciate that.
I really enjoy your videos! You do an excellent job with editing and music. Just makes me want to be there. I wish I could go backpacking with you!
Beautifully filmed👍
Nice to see you going up Peralta. We have done a few hikes up that way recently. We did Geronimo's Cave loop and also went to Robber's Roost off of Fremont Saddle. Love the reviews on all the gear.
Amazing. So many great places to explore in the Supes!
@@eric_hanson the Superstition Wilderness was awesome. But we are looking forward to being back up in Idaho. We have some hikes/backpacking trips planned for the Sawtooth Wilderness and the Big Horn Crags in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness.
I have a Flip Fuel! Thank you, Eric, for inventing this!
I got a Flipfuel as soon as it hit the market. LOVE IT!!
First off I love the idea of this product to help reduce waste and I frequently use one myself. The bad news is this isn't some new product that was just invented. I purchased mine in 2017 from a Korean company called G Works. It is identical in every dimension.
Interesting seeing all the spots I’ve been to. The Supes are amazing. I’m lucky to live so close to them.
Great video! Love the camerawork! As an east coast guy, the west never really appealed to me (heat, no trees, heat, no water, heat...) I'm a teacher, so I could only go during the summer. Retirement in five years - it's on my list! Looks like a great trip! The stars!!! What month was this recorded?
I have the Flip Fuel! Love it!
Great vid. Beautiful surroundings.
That FlipFuel gadget is GENIOUS!! Thank you!
Yup! You're welcome!
Nice video. Thank you for sharing.
Just hiked there two weeks ago! Gorgeous hike! The water was not running at all. In February it was really flowing though!
It's amazing how fast water in the desert will come and go!
That would be a great gift for any backcountry camper! I shall have to add it to my wishlist 😁
It's a great little gift!
Just ordered my flip fuel! Thanks Eric
Love the video! I explore all over the Superstitions. There is so much to see! Loved seeing the scoutmasters gear and hearing some of his stories. Loved the food he was brining. Most of all…loved that you went backpacking with someone that isn’t a TH-cam star. TH-camrs feel like they have to always join up with other TH-camrs. (I get it. I helps with new subscribers) It was refreshing to see another experienced backpacker showing you around an area and showing us some new things. Joe Rogan is good by himself but because he brings on interesting, new people all the time he is vastly successful. 🤙
What a nice trip with a beautiful view of the sky
Eric, not sure if you've ever addressed this, but in your overnight experiences in desert environments, do you ever encounter creepy-crawly things (snakes in particular)? It seems that might be a common experience as they seek warmth in your tent/sleep system. Great video as always!
General rule is to not leave a sleeping bag out and unattended during the day as snakes can find them to be particularly inviting places for a nap. But it's never happened to me thank goodness. Worst I've had is scorpions find an overnight home in my boots, and another scorpion take a day-long ride in the neck of my life jacket while rafting. That was a surprise! Generally though I find the encounters with dangerous things like rattlesnakes to be quite rare.
I was just there a couple weeks ago! Such a beautiful area! I was backpacking boulder canyon and La Barge canyon. Also thank you Eric for the recommendation of the flip fuel! I used it just before this trip and it saved me from using one of those big fuel canisters. So shoutout Eric Flottman the founder of the “flip fuel” for creating this amazing device!! I love this device!!
Hey, thanks! Maybe our paths will cross in the Supes sometime.
This is the way to do a gear review. It’s like if Dennis Villeneuve went hiking with you.
Whoa, well I'll take that!
Great video Eric! Yes I absolutely love flip fuel- game changer in the market for sure! Bro, “favorite poo with a view?” 😂😂😂 You didn’t lol That’s freaking hilarious 😂 i love how Eric is a Boy Scout master- Boy Scouts changed my life and launched my backpacking love. We need more Eric’s like him in the world for these boys. I freaking love your edits and how you build your videos man. Another great one dude. Happy Trails Eric
Scouting changed my life too. Just trying to do what I can to pay it forward.
@@EricFlottmann good stuff Eric! Absolutely agree 👍
Was this a loop? Would love to see the mileage and trail info!
Loved this video. Felt like I was out there with you guys!
That was my hope!
those exact valves have existed for years. this guy is drop shipping.
Beautiful Eric!
You can camp on the top of Weaver's Needle. There's a spot or two up there with a fire pit. Should try it some time!
whoa, now that would be truly epic!
You earned yourself another subscriber at 3:24!
Wow, great to see the flip fuel inventor, I just picked one up at REI a couple of weeks ago
That's an awesome invention!
Great guy , love his flip fuel ❤
Yes cool name !! I just got one of these valves about a month ago but have yet to try it. I’m sure it will work great.
haha right on Eric!
I got one at my local REI. Then I transferred all my half empty canisters together and punctured then threw 4 canisters into the recycle bin.
Q-> What is the pressure release button used for?
Really enjoying the music in your videos since you broke off from Bapckpacker TV 👍👍
How do you know how much fuel to transfer and how do you confirm that the canister is empty? Also, does it stop transferring fuel automatically once the receiving canister is full?
Beautiful photography/videography. I’ve been there, but never backpacked. Question: what would be the best time of year to backpack for an older hiker
To backpack the Superstitions? November thru March is best. Or in general? Ideal backpacking season depends on the area for sure, but I'd say if you can time it with mild temps soon, before the bugs and mosquitos get really intense, that's the best! But basically there are great year round options as long as you're prepared for the environment.
This is something I need to get. .
I tried to make brief notes with the magic marker on the cans So that I know which can to use next time But this tool would probably eliminate that.
Once you use this, it’s great. A kitchen scale will get you to an exact amount, so no guessing..
Yeah this will basically solve that issue. And like Ralph here says, if you use a scale too, it'll also help knowing where your canisters are at exactly.
Nice! My son Bought me one of these!
Definitely on my to purchase list at REI
How long was the trip? Did you loop completely around the Needle?
@eric_hanson do you use the woven or DCF floor version of the Durston x mid pro?
The woven floor. That's been a solid option for me.
Would love to have the trail info to copy your trip.
Immediately bought a Flip-Fuel! 👍
Was that a muslin bag he used to carry the Skurka Beans? I’d love to use natural materials to store and transport my food. How well does that work in more humid regions? I hate how plasticky backpacking gear tends to be. I realize it can be lighter and more water resistant. But I still don’t like using it for my food, water, or clothing.
I've seen flipfuel on social but wasn't nt sure how legit it was. Thanks for this because I'll finally get to do something with allllllllll my almost empty cannisters! My shipment is on its way to Nova Scotia!
Oh hey! I just bought one of those! Genuinely well thought out product. I just hope the stupid people don't ruin it for the rest of us... I hope flipfuel has a long and happy life.
Yeah I bought one of those 3 years ago on Aliexpress for a few bucks. They've been around for quite a long time. Just saw that he charges 33 bucks for this. Pretty outrageous, even considering he has to cover the risk involving propane canisters.
Kinda whack to pretend this is new but I guess the cut makes it worth it.
Love the superstition mountains. I hike and backpack out there all the time.
I love being out there. I was surprised there weren't any wild flowers, I think I was a week too early for that.
The superstions are just a short drive from me and we need to hike out there more.
Please post the Skurka Beans recipe in the comments! ❤ I'm always looking for more made at home backpacking meals to try out.

Got a flip fuel in feb '23. 😎
I’m a local, is that Boulder Canyon trail or Lone Tree? I wanna go!
We started on Peralta and then linked up with a few others on a loop.
Looks like Peralta to Fremont Saddle. That’s where you get the big view of Weavers Needle. Continue another half mile to Lone Tree to the right instead of going down like they did.
Eric - at 21:55 - did your hiking pants suffer a blowout, or do they have some sort of side venting?
13:03 shut up and take my money! It is available in Europe?
The man solving every backpacker's problem is late to the game. I bought one of these in January of 2020 off Amazon, over 4 years ago. There are plenty of these from the same Chinese factory that will brand and color them however you like on Amazon right now for less than $15. All this dude is doing is clever marketing for something that's been around for a long time. Good on him for leading the Boy Scouts into the field though! God bless you for that sir!
I've had mine longer than that.
I think the flipfuel brand brings us consistent supply/distribution, quality control and domestic customer support. That’s what got me to buy from him vs. a no-name unit off of Amazon.
@@jpriddle you don't get better QC because it will be coming from the exact same factory. and who needs customer support for a valve that cost $15??
He's the goat
I don't understand why everyone carries those cans around. I hate not knowing how much fuel is in a can.
I carry a alcohol stove and a twig stove. They weigh next to nothing since both are titanium. They cool extremely fast. Ive never ran out of twigs.
I use the alcohol for water or coffee only.
I just don't understand why people think these loud gas stoves are so great.
I also watched a video where the guy called for rescue because he ran out of fuel. Was using stove to melt snow. And only had backpack meals.
He told rescue he was out of food because he was clueless about survival.
It amazes me how gear dependent some are.
Agree Eric is a good name.
#erictennant
haha well said!
will a new cannister accept the last few dreggs from your old one? or do u have to burn off some fuel before theres room?
It is possible to overfill a canister, but it is not a good idea. Overfilling a canister could in worst case lead to an explosion. I always wheigh my canisters to make sure I don't overfill them.
I would not try to add fuel to a brand new canister, they are already pressurized to capacity.
Timmothy Leary solved all the world's problems one time too, then woke up the next day.
You mention a Mexican food made by 2 ladies I believe. What is the name of it and where can I get it?
Thanks for reminding me that I forgot to link it! Here ya go: itacatefoods.com/
Problem is, that you are not allowed to bring the canisters on board of airplanes.
Amazon delivers everywhere. Almost everywhere. Have them deliver it to a locker near the airport.
Eric You ever interested in doing Voyagers National Park together with me. I'm down. Only way to get to trail head is by boat
I haven't done anything up there. I'm always interested in exploring new places!
@@eric_hanson lemme know would entertain the idea and possibly take care of some costs

I like your channel better than Dan Beckers.
just letting you know!
Great video. Love the focus on the hike. I have to say though...I just don't get dessert living. In my opinion, that landscape is just ugly.
whoa whoa whoa. To each their own I guess!
FlipFuel is not the original innovator of this. CampingMoon and Lixada have had this for a long time before FlipFuel even existed.
What we really need are isobutane dot legal refillable canisters with outfitters like REI, Bass Pro, Moosejaw etc doing the refills of these things. Keep plenty of this garbage out of landfills.
Not sure this is a good idea. For one thing it is illegal to transport refilled containers that are not designed to be refillable on any highway (though getting caught is unlikely). The big one though is that these canisters are not at all designed to be refillable and you risk them bursting/exploding (even brand new ones can do this, I had one explode a few years ago, fortunately I had stepped away when it went off). The metal is very thin, and the expansion and contraction of the canister from refilling and using it weakens the metal walls. If you are going to do this, I would not refill a canister more than once.
There are some cautions people should have around over-filling containers. It's a good idea to use a scale to weigh the canisters to avoid over filling. I've never heard about these being illegal move (although fuel canisters in general are regulated for shipping).
@@eric_hansonwill never allow facts to get in the way of telling a good story 💯
I’m not sure DOT restrictions apply to the amounts of fuel being discussed. The concern about expansion and contraction of the canisters seems a bit far fetched ( though of course anything is possible). As long as you’re not overfilling the canisters, you’re more likely to get frostbite from accidental release rather than causing a canister to rupture just by transferring one to another. You can make any fuel canister explode in a hot enough car. If I made these gadgets , however, id absolutely be testing this since a video blowing stuff up would do well on TH-cam!
A part of this would come down to how the refill is done. I go to fill my propane tank for my grill it is pumped under pressure. This is using thermodynamics and gravity to transfer between them. They have adapters to take a propane tank and refill those Coleman canisters using just gravity. I would be more concerned about different qualities of gas being transferred.
@@jhaas68865the biggest problem would be a rupturing tank that has been over filled. These liquified gases expand quite a lot as they heat up in the sun or similar hot environment above normal room temperature. A factory full canister is really 80% full by volume, leaving critical room for expansion. If you're not weighing it as you're refilling, it's very easy to overfill... just shaking the canister to hear if it's full doesn't cut it.
Unless this man is able to melt the snowpack earlier opening up access to the wilderness then what are we even talking about?
I gave a thumbs down because this is not the type of content i want to watch as an avid backpacker. Boooo! Thumbs down
Curious what you like? I backpack as well. I try and get out monthly. I liked the video. I got to see some people having a good backpacking while I sit in a hotel room on a business trip. I learned a new backpacking meal I want to try. Saw the scoutmasters gear load out. Checks most of my boxes.
@@Supes_Outdoors create something and I'll judge it for you
@@Supes_Outdoors the backpacking genre on TH-cam has been taken over by grifters. I miss the days of Joey Cocanato, David Grey, Brian Delay. It was dudes filming themselves enjoying backpacking. They were never selling you a tent, claiming to solve your problems, promoting the newest GPS watch. The hiked, smiled, and shared. All of these lames were just gathered together by Outdoor Vitals. All grifters! They should start a home shopping network or something so the backpacking genre can be reserved for backpacking. It's clear as day these guys all love money more than backpacking. It's. I'm going to be starting a campaign to take back our genre for people who love backpacking. It would be great if you wouldn't support their grift.
@@ericcomp7032 I think this is conflating creators who make content for recreation and those who make it as a profession. As a profession, you have to make a living.
