I dont know what happened but you cant help but feel for the guy. The basslines on the first album were great so it wasn't musicianship, Touring, celebrity, band dynamics are hard. At least he can have the memory (and hopefully royalties) of being part of one of the best albums of that era!

I spent a day interviewing Andy in 2015. One quote that stood out:
“I went up to Al’s house a couple of days ago [who was back from LA for Xmas]. We built a snowman and his Dad took a photo. It’s always good to see him. He’s not Alex Turner to me, he’s just Al’. My mate I went to school with.”
A lovely guy. He was as you say almost Zen like and held no bitterness (link in reply below).

Let's be honest, as friends, they did him dirty, but they are apparently good friends again so kudos to Nick for that. Seems a lovely guy.

Always think about the mental state of former band members with stories similar to this. Albeit the circumstances can range, still can't fathom the crushing reality of missing out on "the dream" or whatever. Matt from My Chem immediately comes to mind. Or John and Green Day.

I don't think this was a "sacking" as such. More of a mutual departure. Touring is fuckin hard. It looks easy because all we see is the hour n half of a performance and we go back home to the missus & kids. Being stuck on a bus with 3 or 4 other lads, farting, shitting with only one toilet boils down to prison mentality. Throw in the odd addiction nightmare and you have a recipe for disaster. He is still doing music and festivals the way he wants it. Good for him. Seems like a really good bloke.

Yep. It can get tough very quickly, especially if audiences are small, and cynical. And the only payment you manage to scrounge covers van hire and diesel. Chuck an unappreciative handful of wankers as an audience and the whole enterprise quickly feels like a tough slog. Up and down the M1 at three in the morning, a four pack of out of date Asda lager on the "rider". And that's the good bit. 😆

I get it tho. I was in a band and enjoying playing gigs in my own country, but when my band mates wanted to start playing Europe, I just couldn’t be bothered… quite simply.
Travelling around in a van, eating shit food, setting up my drum kit every night, getting sweaty, nowhere to shower, then driving to the next place. Also, it cost a lot of money upfront and we didn’t make much money on the road.
On the flipside I had a lovely house, girlfriend, loved sitting on my computer or my sofa and just enjoying my normal life.
Going on the road, definitely isn’t for everyone

When you're on the presuppose of making it you can't let anyone down and you have to be fully committed.
I really do feel for him because that would of been a hard decision to make and he obviously has big regrets but he is the ex bass player of arctic monkeys and how many people can say that?
To forgive or to let something go that you love and feel passionate about takes a special person and l respect him massively for that.

I agree. I think management probably had a big part in the decision and pressured the rest of the members to take agree to it. Reality is that image can play a huge part in the commercial success of a band. But the guy seemed genuine, was a solid bassist and the album he did is timeless. They did him dirty though in my opinion. I can't imagine the pain he felt too, just watching this band blow up into the stratosphere success-wise. Would they have achieved the same success if he was still in the band? Who knows...

I have the feeling this was the main reason too, unfortunately. Obviously, they didn't want to say this out loud to him or in public. If you look at all those guitar bands at the time, it's super-skinny lads. I think management just thought that if they wanted to be successful in the massive US market, then the whole group had to look the part.

@@reppinTV It's not for everyone, but it has their most creative arrangements, an awesome concept, and some of their best lyrics. If you prefer Alex yapping about London's nightlife while playing a bunch of power chords, that's ok! Some albums require a little bit of brain grease to get into it, and some people prefer simpler stuff.
