As a Alabamian, for perspective I had a friend call me and tell me this morning “he seen a a car hit a buck on the way to work”. Then proceeds to ask me to take his saw from his house and go cut the head off it or at least the antlers. I went to go do it half way through my cup of coffee and a guy was already loading it up in the back of his truck with other vehicles trying to do the same. I mean technically the entire neighborhood came out of the wood works to claim roadkill including myself, and I came to the realization that I fit the stereotypes.
In Virginia a friend's wife totaled her SUV hitting a huge buck. My friend went out at first light retrieving the head to have it mounted in honor of his wife. Of course this was South of Lynchburg.
Years ago my mom had a deer hit her little Geo Metro car. It pretty much jumped on the hood trying to cross the highway. Everyone asked if we got the venison. But no, the dumb thing actually got up and ran off!

I mean Texas BBQ isn't "bad", just inferior and insufferably self-important. Brisket is ok if there's nothing better around. Learn to cook pork, besides those sausages. ; )
As a born and raised North Carolina guy, I think NC should be ranked higher because to this day everyone freaks out even by the mention of snow. Every grocery store is emptied of milk and bread. Great ranking though, love it Matt!
I’m in NC as well, my family is one of the few that don’t freak out. My momma and daddy taught us to cook on a wood stove when we were little. Now we did always get milk, but that was to make biscuits and pancakes. If we got bread it was to eat any lunch meat before it went bad.
Yeah, but NC and TN are still nothing like GA/MS/AL/SC in that regard. Tennesseans aren't good at driving in snow, but even we couldn't help but chuckle at Atlanta's reaction to 2" of snow. People don't abandon their cars on the Interstate for 2 inches of snow in Tennessee. (But we definitely do still shut most stuff down when we have 6+". As was the case last week when a large percentage of the state had 6-10" on the ground for a week straight.)
I’m from Mississippi and honestly, I 100% agree with your assessment! I am seriously proud that my home state made second place because we DESERVE IT! Not first, Alabama gets that fair and square, but second is significant. I actually live in Louisiana and yeah, it is the most unique state in the union. I grew up on the Miss/Alabama border (a bit East of Meridian) and in that area it's literally called the twin states. There is very much a reason for that as the only real change over the state line was which University rivalry will tear apart a family if you dare marry the wrong fan.
It’s really hard to pin point where Virginia gets “southern”. I mainly say it starts at Ashland down or hell Richmond va where I live. I mean it was the confederate capital back then
Honestly, how "southern" a state is can often also be answered by how many Revolutionary War or War of 1812 battlefields it has. The more numerous or famous they are, usually they're more "southern" in ranking. Louisiana and Virginia have big claims with New Orleans and Yorktown respectively, while Alabama basically hatched out of a cannonball, since the Creek Campaign among other stuff literally led to the state's creation in the 1810s.

Born and bred in Missouri. Depending on where you live, parts of Missouri are definitely Southern. Anything North of I-44 is considered Midwestern. That includes St. Louis, Columbia, LOTO, Kansas City, Hannibal. Anything South of I-44 but WEST of US 63 is considered “Hillbilly”. That includes Springfield, Branson, Lebanon, Mountain Grove. Anything that is South of I-44 but EAST of US 63 is considered “Southern”. Now, within that area, you have another area that is even more “Southern”, and that is from Sikeston south through the boot heel. That area has almost an “Deep South” or “antebellum” feel, much like Mississippi and Alabama.
From far Western KY….which is west of KY and Barkley Lakes….i agree with this 100000%. The boot heel also makes a case for being Southern just for Lamberts and Boomland. I’ve said for many many years that if you combined the boot heel, the same latitude line for southern Illinois and Southern Indiana you gave for Missouri, and us in western KY…you could make another southern state. These areas are just different from the rest of their home states….and that difference is just being southern.
I think you have to include KC BBQ as southern and I would draw the line on 44 going SW from Rolla. There are a few counties north of Joplin/I44 that would fall into a southern feel too but above I70 is clearly Midwest

I'd be interested to see Matt draw his line on a Virginia map denoting the South. Personally, as someone from Central Virginia, I would use what I call the "sweet tea line" and that is the line which once you cross, most restaurants stop making sweet tea. So far, I've determined Culpeper and Richmond fall below that line, but Fredericksburg is north of it. Edit: Some of y'all have never been to Augusta or Rockingham Counties, and it shows.
As a former Virginian, now in Tennessee, I propose that the James River be the dividing line. Sorry Mechanicsville, but growing up in Chester, I still remember "South of the James, by invitation only."

However, y'all host the Cincinnati Airport. So you kinda let it in.
A lot of my mom’s side of the family is from Oklahoma, and there’s always been the debate in the family whether OK is the south or Midwest. Every meal, ie breakfast, dinner and supper, were made from scratch and always served with milk gravy

My family is from Evangeline Parish (we moved to a different area of the state since then), and my mom confuses me with her sayings sometimes. I love our state.

You are truly a proud Missourian, and after having gone to school there, I don't know why, but God bless you.
I think you have to include KC BBQ as southern and I would draw the line on 44 going SW from Rolla. There are a few counties north of Joplin/I44 that would fall into a southern feel too but above I70 is clearly Midwest
How to tell if someone's from Missouri? Ask Then how to pronounce half our towns and cities.😂💯 And as a proud Ozauken. hillbilly. I'm glad we made it on that list.

As a Virginian of a certain age, I remember when NoVa was Southern. In the mid nineties, the North began their second invasion of Central Virginia. Soon, there will just be a few areas and people considered Southern. That really hurts.
Moved up to Northern Virginia coming from Texas and North Carolina. I felt like I left the South once I passed Richmond.
I can't even go to a Waffle House or Cracker Barrel.
I grew up South of Roanoke Va and have felt the division of cultures for a long time. Now I feel visiting family near DC is like going to a Borg Collective Cube straight out of Star Trek. It's very stressful and depressing to see how that side of my family has changed how they think. More materialistic and less empathy for working people. I'm always grateful to get South of Charlottesville, get a real country ham breakfast with a big spoon of grits.
Agreed. Northern Virginia isn’t the South. But I’ve been to Martinsville once or twice and if you sell $1 pink hot dogs at the track, that’s Southern enough for me (the hot dogs might be more expensive now, wouldn’t know, haven’t been since ‘19)

@@heatherr4321 They didn’t when I lived up there. The closest Cracker Barrel was on US 81 near Lynchburg. In Charlottesville we had some great private diners, one was like Waffle House, open 24 hrs. The Palmetto tree is the symbol of SC resilience against the British! They were used to build Fort Moultrie in less than 5 weeks, which was instrumental in protecting Charleston from the British Navy during the revolutionary war. The walls of the fort were so strong that rumor has it that they ricocheted the canon balls back towards the British ships.
Charleston only fell at the end of the war due to a land invasion bc they couldn’t take it by sea thanks to the Palmetto tree.

SC was also where the War Between the States started. Pretty damn southern
As a life-long resident of South Carolina, I approve of this message.
I think the line should put UVA in the North and VT in the South. Just to make it clear
Same, I've heard any and everything North of Fredericksburg is it's own State 😂
Fredericksburg is kinda the dividing line. Much different once you get south of it.
Charlottesville -- definitely North.
As a former Virginian, now in Tennessee, I propose that the James River be the dividing line. Sorry Mechanicsville, but growing up in Chester, I still remember "South of the James, by invitation only."
As a proud Kentuckian, I can only say - it's not our fault Cincinnati is right across the river. Buckeyes with their weird food and strange customs crossing the bridge when no one asked them to (continued grumbling noises...).

Nobody, Southern or Italian or Southern Italian, asked you to "give" us the equivalent of bad lunch lady "chili" served over watery overdone spaghetti. Thanks?😂🤣
To be fair Florida could make a similar argument about snowbirds flying south ... get rid of the Yankees and FL is by far the most southern state in the country their what happens when Alabama lifts all it's alcohol and drug laws and doesn't judge you for missing church
You can bomb a few bridges "accidentally" on 4th of July - just sayin'.
