Dude he just made me cry! "I have autism, which means I have the deficiency of neurons which inhibits me from emotionally trading places with people which makes empathy very difficult. Does that mean I can't be a good doctor?"
@@Renee12801 Some autistic people have high empathy but it's more common for them to have low empathy. It's often hard for autistic people to imagine the emotions or situations someone else experiences. Having empathy is not the same as being emotional
I heard about many autistic women in particular being empaths and able to feel the room but not truly read it and it kind of blew me away the first time because that's exactly what happens to me all the time. It basically means we acutely feel the emotions from others (up to feeling little tipsy if others have been drinking, god I HATE that) but are not able to figure out more subtle things from body language and not knowing who it's directed at or wheather or not people want others (you) to know that they are feeling that way. It also means having a meltdown because you took the wrong train and just know your mother is worried about you and you don't have a handy to call her and tell her you're okay... I suppose it depends a lot on how bad you are at reading others and at what parts specifically you are bad. Or maybe it's related to sensory processing issues where many are also either not sensitive at all or way too sensitive (that cafetaria in the film seemed almost eerily quiet to me because to me these rooms are basically just a constant stream of loud and disorientating noise).
I laughed at this scene lol 😂 Andrews all mighty and proud when saying he will keep the position got me dead, especially all those faces of Melendez and Lim. The audacity and balls he has to do that 😂
probably observation of previous behavior. everyone else couldn't imagine andrew's would do this cause of empathy cause what kind of person would do that to the people he works with. Shaun with little empathy looked at Andrew's past actions and guessed this was the most likely out come.
Shaun has a limiting case of ASD, and his case limits his empathy. Andrews is a sociopath, meaning his empathy is also severely limited. Game recognized game.
I've read somewhere that there's a theory that people on the spectrum don't lack empathy but it's actually the opposite, that we have to much empathy to the point we don't know how to express it, when it comes to me I would agree with the theory, I honestly worry about others way too much
Yeah, my bff, one of my other good friends, and one of my cousins all have autism/aspergers in different severities of it and they all have empathy. Guess it kind of depends on the individual too.
Adding to the point, some ppl see a lot and observe too much and it worries them a lot. A nagging feeling, a step sideways and they keep thinking about it. These ppl eventually limit Thier circle as they can't handle it.. they walk off parties and events to avoids heartburns. Slowly they are tagged COLD
While I enjoy watching The Good Doctor, and enjoy seeing that Shaun is much more accurate than most other Autistic characters I've seen, this was the one scene that saddened me, as it drew from a harmful stereotype. The reality is that most people with autism are capable of feeling empathy, and a lot of them feel it more than most people do. Some of us have a hard time with it, but difficult does not mean impossible at all, and it's pretty rare to find someone with Autism who is not capable of feeling empathy. I am one of the few people who find it more difficult than most people, but I am fully capable of feeling empathy. For me, it just means taking a second to imagine if the situation happened to me and how I would feel, rather than just jumping right into the person's shoes. I'm disappointed that the show promoted the stereotype. The part when he won the money was definitely funny though, and I got a chuckle when everyone turned around all shocked and slowly handed over the money.
I agree, but I personally do struggle with empathizing like what was portrayed here. I do understand that you and so many are different, but any representation is good. It may not fit every person but it is accurate depiction of many including myself. I spent over 20 minutes for an example to adjust this in a more appropriate manner for various views.

I have it too and it’s hard for me to show empathy expecally in the moment, So I often talk to my cousin And explain everything I’ve said to someone, she tells me that was a hurtful thing to say I feel slightly bad after the fact and I will apologize unless I know they don’t deserve it. A lot of the time I do get forced to apologize for something I do not find insensitive or hurtful.
Good times with the betting pool! In addition to enjoying Shaun winning, I also really liked Morgan and Claire’s reactions to Shaun’s “Yes”! Looking at the amount of cash in there, I’m sure Shaun could take all three of his fellow Residents, plus Lea and Glassman for that matter, out to a fine San Jose dinner!
Here’s the thing about having mirror neuron deficiencies. It seems that when our mirror neurons do get a strong signal, they aren’t used to handling it. When we DO feel empathy, we feel it STRONGER than you would feel it.

It looked like Shaun was writing something on Park’s tablet. I’m guessing that was him making his pick even though he didn’t say it. Park gave the option of “anyone else” beyond a few favorites, so that must be the option Shaun went with.
I like this show, I'm also going to assume it's not super accurate about all autistic people. Such is life. His character on screen might be a good step in representation though
Someone please convince me to continue to watch this show. I dropped this show when they killed off Melendez for a stupid storyline about Shaun feeling a deep loss because of the death of someone he had a deep bond with still though MELENDEZ didn't have to die they could have used a patient he was really close with & now that Claire left I don't really know if it will be worth picking this show up again
@Cash Eye, same here. There really was no need to kill Melendez off. My heart breaks for Claire, I only watched season 4 for her but after she left..i see no need to watch the show anymore.
