    I grew pumpkins once when I was 14 and I loved it. There something about gardening that just makes me so happy. I did greenhouse my senior year and I thrived in that class. Last year I did my first full garden by myself. I learned so much and had successes and failures. I think it’s because I did start later in the year. This year I started in February with all of my plants from seed. It’s going so well and I’m so excited to even have more fruits and vegetables!

      I feel this. My first year doing a full garden was last year. Wow. I was so full of myself. I thought I knew everything. Its amazing how much you learn from failure. This year was a grand improvement on that first try. Failed quite a bit this year too. But just slightly less lmao

      @@jnjagr7982 In general, I don't recommend more than one pumpkin plants per pot. Instead use smaller pots but grow individually. Pumpkins have shallow roots and will perform best if not planted close to each other. When I plant 2 plants in a pot, I usually get fewer and smaller fruits. You can go as small as 7 gallon grow bags or 14 in wide pots for small variety pumpkins. I hope this helps.

    • @TowardGarden

      If the plant is small all you need to do is to wait. As it grows, female flowers will show up. Some common reasons delaying fruit or female flowers are hot/humid weather, over watering, or too much nitrogen in the soil. I used organic 3-4-4 N-P-K fertilizer (Garden-tone). You can use any balanced fertilizer like 5-5-5 (make sure it has calcium or add some garden lime to it). Try to avoid high nitrogen fertilizer; too much nitrogen can prevent flowering. Some other reasons for no female flowers could be: planting too close together, hot or humid weather, and too much or too little watering. Thanks for the comment and good luck!

    Okay so I know that this video was made four months ago but hopefully you can respond.
    I am currently growing a pumpkin in a pot and it's fairly big. I already have a pumpkin growing (I hand pollinated it) and it's about the size of a tennis ball. As the pumpkin started to get bigger... all the other small female buds turned yellow. I removed them because I didnt want the yellow to spread a disease, is that normal for all the other female buds to rot when growing a pumpkin? My plant isnt "HUGE" so I only wanted one pumpkin to grow so it could put more effort into the ONE pumpkin. Last year I wasnt successful with growing a pumpkin and I really wanted to grow one this year. I'm also using the small sugars. Thank you for your time hopefully you will be able to get back to me.

      It looks like you are on the right track. Most likely the small yellow buds are the ones that were pollinated poorely and should have been removed, which you did. They wouldn't mature anyway. I think all is fine with your pumpkin and you will harvest one healthy pumpkin soon. Thank you very much for visiting and good luck!

    My pumpkin tree is growing but the lower leaves are becoming yellow ..so I cut those yellow leaves...is it the right process?

    • @TowardGarden
      @TowardGarden  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There could be many reasons for leaves to turn yellow: lack of nutrient (especially Nitrogen), lack of watering, or disease. If older leaves become yellow with time, it is mainly because nutrients (like nitrogen) are moving to the younger leaves where they are needed. While cutting lower leaves is a good practice to prevent fungus disease to spread up, I suggest to monitor your watering schedule and feed your plant with a balanced fertilizer such as 5-5-5 (N-P-K). Pumpkins are heavy feeders so fertilize your plant frequently. Thanks for getting in touch and best of luck to you!

    • @TowardGarden
      @TowardGarden  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Depending on what you have available, there are different options for home made fertilizer. One of the good sources would be home compost from kitchen waste. You will have to mix different elements to get a nutrient rich fertilizer. Worm compost, composted manure (cow , horse, chicken,...) and fish emulsion are good source of nitrogen (N). Add wood ash or granite dust for potassium (K) and bone meal or composted fruit for phosphorus (P). You can also use egg shells for calcium and Epsom salt for magnesium. I hope this helps.

    Hi on my pumpkin the female flowers are opening before the male flowers any idea why this could be thanks

    • @TowardGarden
      @TowardGarden  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      For me this usually happens with my zucchini plants which are of same family. Usually the first flowers are male but sometimes flowers can be out of sync. If the plant has too many fruit flowers and not pollinating, it will trigger the plant to reverse the trend and the next flowers will probably be male and few female flowers. I am not sure but maybe the weather plays a role (like cloudy or rainy weather), so I think as weather improves, you will see more male and female flowers. Also, if you have enough space, it is always good idea to grow several plants so you can use other plants flowers for pollination. I hope this helps and thank you for visiting!

    • @TowardGarden
      @TowardGarden  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So glad you love the channel. A complete fertilizer has all three elements of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potash (N-P-K) plus calcium which is critical for plants in containers. It is better if it has a balanced ratio like 10-10-10, 5-5-5, or usually for fruit vegetables with a higher ratio of P, K. I usually use 3-4-4. As an easy option, whenever is doubt, you can use any organic tomato fertilizer available. Wishing you a great harvest. Thank you so much for your comment and happy gardening!

    • @TowardGarden
      @TowardGarden  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you are experiencing hot weather, that should be the main reason. To help plants, try to protect them with some shade cloths from hot mid day sun. Otherwise, over watering, too much nitrogen in the soil or lack of calcium can be the issue. I would recommend feeding you plants with a low nitrogen fertilizer, the water soluble ones are best for an immediate effect, something like Liquinox 0-10-10 Bloom. Also, if your fertilizer doesn't contain calcium, sprinkle 1 table spoon of garden lime in each container. I hope this helps and thank you for getting in touch.
