This video completes my circle. Found the channel as an omnivore 8 years ago. You really reeled me in and played a huge part in starting my vegan journey. Had a lot of protein fear. Thank you for everything. Cheers!
Yep...ditto. At 58 I'm consciously trying to up my protein intake a bit, especially since I don't eat a lot of food/calories. I know it causes me to "waste" some of the protein eaten as it gets burned for energy instead of being used for maintenance/repair.
Post menopausal here too and the science says I need a lot more protein than I was getting.....about double. This isn't that easy to get and it's even harder to gain muscles without sex hormones so every bit of protein I can get I relish.
1. No whole plant food is pure carbs. You're still getting protein. 2. The most satiating food as tested is potatoes, something most people think of as a carb. 3. You could be feeling that way because of your beliefs. The stomach has sensors that signal satiation to your brain based on volume. More fiber == more volume.
@@eatplantsloveanimals Long-term satiety (i.e. after the food has been digested) is determined by caloric content and macronutrient composition. If you eat tons of buttery or fat-heavy food (e.g. croissants, cinnamon rolls, french fries, etc.) to the point of volume satiety for every meal for a whole day, you might feel very full the next morning.
Good thing you explained about the plantbased protein.. First thing that people ask when they hear that I am a vegan is always about the protein. So it is definetely a topic worth paying attention to. Good job!
I am a vegan and i have lost over 50 pounds by eating more protein. I eat a lot of plant based high protein items. I also drink protein shakes. When i went vegan everyone told me not to because i would not get enough protein. Well i have proved everyone wrong! Please keep promoting high protein plant based meals. It has really helped me with my meal planning. Thanks 4 all u do 😊
I don’t usually comment. I thumbs up and share, but I felt like I needed to add my two cents this time. I’ve only been vegan 1 1/2 and not looking back! Your videos are my most favourite. You are a great teacher as well as recipe creator. I have learned so much!! Thank you. Probably the number one question I get asked by my meat eating friends is “how do you get enough protein??”. Your videos addressing this helps me understand and to share. Even if I don’t need the amount of protein you do because I don’t burn as much , I appreciate knowing how and where to get it in a diverse and tasty way. As a fellow British Columbian, I really like when you show new products you have found. Can’t tell you, how many foods you have suggested are now in my cupboard and fridge ( latest.. Big Mountain soy free tofu… sooo good!!). Anyway, keep doing what you are doing. Thank you !
I appreciate Derek's pragmatic approach. Not everyone is going to be convinced to switch to veganism by the ethical arguments. People's motivations are diverse, and if you can appeal to their desire for a more aesthetic body, that's great! It's ultimately better for the animals and the environment, regardless of the specific reasons for switching to a plant-based diet.
Got my first muscle up today at 54 thanks to your old video! Another great video today. Your channel has been a huge help to me since I turned vegan 2 1/2 years ago. Thank you so much!
I am not even vegan or vegetarian, but i mainly eat vegan to reduce my animal product intake. People always are suprised of how much protein i get in a day. I think it is really easy to hit my protein though, without doing crazy things. The main concern these people have is that this protein is not good enough, but I think as you never eat only a single food item, you should be fine. Thank you for sharing this.
I’m so glad you’re creating content. You offer a balanced, honest take on plant-based nutrition & health and it is very appreciated. When I have friends who say you have to eat meat to build muscle I can just send them a link to your channel! It’s also nice to see examples of higher calorie meals in general. Not to mention delicious, creative meal ideas and recipes. And your new cookbook - vegan sauces & dressings is great. Keep doing what you’re doing!
Have loved you and Crystal for YEARS! Thanks for your content, always! BTW: Miss your hair! As a guy who is also struggling with thinning hair, I can tell you its way worse and more noticeable for guys with dark hair - your light hair in longer styles really suit you well! But, having said that, there’s nothing more important than loving how you look and feel, and if that happens to be with a buzzcut then I’m happy for you, brother 💛 Big love from South Africa 🇿🇦
I love your measured and friendly approach to things. There will always be people policing and scrutinizing others any way they can. As usual, I love your obsession with citing modern research. It's one of the reasons that I watch your channel (as a non-vegan) and recommend it to others. Of course, I love your energy too, and I'd like to reduce my animal product intake, mainly for health reasons.
A couple years ago my doctor told me I needed to get 100gr of plant protein per day because absorption rate is less and because I was 70 and doing weight training. That was hard enough but now she’s telling me 200gr!!!!! I disagree with her but really do appreciate that you provide “meals I eat in a day” that actually equal 100 grams or more. Thanks, just want you to know you are appreciated😊
Don’t change, Derek! We love your high protein videos. Do I get as much protein as you? No, but it’s always a great reminder to intentionally include a plant based protein source with every meal to create what we all want, balance. You’ll never please everybody, but science doesn’t lie. You live so intentionally and we all appreciate your thoughtfulness and thoroughness
What a lot of those doctors don't take into consideration is small people with small appetites. I am a 63 year old female. I am not very big, 5'1'' currently 112 lbs. I would like to get down to 107 but that would cut my calorie intake to about 1200 calories a day or less. I do moderate exercise and try to do a bit of strength training a couple days a week. I have kept track of protein and some days only hit about 25 grams of protein. I only eat once or twice a day. Here it is 3pm in the afternoon and just having my first meal. Some days I do better. When I watch your meals, I think, good lord how does he eat so much. Lol. I have started to incorporate seitan in my diet and that helps a lot. Protein smoothies makes it much easier, too. I have always felt you did the high protein meals for all the skeptics out there. It is very doable to get enough protein, but for small appetites and people that don't need very many calories, it can be a challenge and your videos help so much for ideas. Thanks Derek!
You are so right in what you are doing man!!! We need more vegan bodybuilders, because the fear of not getting enough protein is what stops a lot of people! you prove them wrong in the most efficent way possible! :)
These docs are not athletes.... Thank goodness for you and channels like you... A high protein mostly whole food plant based diet is what allowed me to build bone mass and also to dance and keep up with women less than half my age 3 hours a day x 5 times a week... I know that I couldnt be doing any of this with less protein... Your channel and other vegan athlete and bodybuilding channels lit the way for me... Yours specifically has been my favourite and I tell others about it as needed too... ❤ PS I of course love the docs too... They are totally amazing and have totally lit the way re health knowledge and illness avoidance... ❤
I get what you’re doing 100%. I’m personally mad that we’ve been misled over and over again by the meat industry misinformation. We get all our info from marketing- instead of looking at the science.
Great video, Derek!! I totally understand and support this strategy for promoting veganism and I appreciate your consistent effort and advocacy for the animals!
One of the best videos you've done. Terrific information and presentation. (And, my own obsession, note that the very important protein ergothioneine we get from eating fungi, not animal-based or plant-based foods. Those who focus on proteins might think more about this one.)
I just finished how not to age from Dr Gregor and he says one of the top ways to slow again is protein restriction. In fact, he says the benefit of fasting is primarily the protein restriction, so fasting mimicking diets that keep calories low and low in protein can replicate the same benefits of fasting all together. Crazy! He’s says average adult should be 40-60g of protein per day for women-men. Assume it’s slightly higher if you are very active. But my question is what’s the balance of good muscle development and slowing aging? That book is changing a lot of my thinking around protein intake. Have you read it? What’s your thoughts?
It's a really interesting book, but he is focusing on ultimate longevity. For me personally, 40-60g protein a day is too low, and even without trying, I eat more protein than that. I think if it works for some people, that's great, but I don't think he is taking into account people who are very active/do heavy strength training in those numbers.
I love that you focus on protein! I don't lift, but I'm very active and when I don't eat enough protein, I'm constantly reaching for snacks. The reality is that anyone who's regularly working out is going to need more than the recommended protein amounts in order to grow and maintain muscle
Thanks for this! Also, what most people don't understand is that the recommended amount of protein of 50 grams for an adult is not the ideal quantity, but the MINIMUM. Any physically active adult requires more than that. If you want to build muscle, you need more than that. Your tips and suggestions are perfectly in line with the scientific evidences. :)
Yeah man, protein is definitely my main reason for not going meatless (really just chicken breast). Yet you're still the only "fitness" or "health" channel I'm subscribed to. Can't say if I'll ever fully make the switch, but your vids are great!
Hope you do decide to make the switch! At least give it a go and see how you like it! Can guarantee that vegan will make you happier. It did for me. Every meal is pure joy and gratitude simply for knowing I contribute to the protection of innocent lovable beings. ❤ It literally tastes a thousand times better when you feel happy eating it.
I think its interesting that one, why are meat eaters always so concerned how non-animal products eater thrive? They always want to cut us down and I have no idea why. 2nd - all these SAD eaters never mention fiber. I watch another WFPB channel too and they have a T-shirt that says I get my protein from plants. Where do you get your fiber? Fiber is integral to a healthy body as well as building healthy mass. I am significantly healthier and stronger since switching over to WFPB 5 yrs ago and I am in my 60s. I have had way too many injuries - significant ones that are no longer as significant because WFPB lowers inflammation. I would say to all those SAD eaters that 1 mind your own business and 2 don’t knock it until you try it. Facts are facts - research and learn before you cast shade. Good health to you all!!!
Your content, and the protein breakdown details, is very important and I have leaned to your channel to fully go plant based. And yes, you do it for people like me! We are many. Thank you.
Let me put everyones doubts at ease so check this out: Ever since my school days I weighed between 83kg/ 182lbs to 116kg/ 255lbs and my protein at my lowest weight was at 280g and now sitting at around 100kg my protein intake is at 150g and let me tell you.. I've gotten stronger, I've gotten bigger and no I wasn't in a protein deficit. You will be alright, 150g of protein at 100kg is as low as it can get and I am totally fine. 47cm/ 18.5 inch arms, big squat and bench and huge deadlift. Armwrestling, combat sports as grappling, muay that etc.. and I also do 100m sprints and still 150g is enough. Don't stress the protein❤️
Coincidentally protein sources are also highly sought after by pregnant women and breastfeeding moms so you've helped a bigger audience than you think.. you have no idea how hungry we get and extra calories (and protein requirements) to produce milk for our infants. Thank you for your delicious recipes which continues to help me in my twin breastfeeding journey :)
Nutrition is chemistry and science. If your commenters haven't studied either, then it's time for them to study up before acting like experts. Sheesh. Thank you for setting them straight. And for sharing the numbers. I'm in perimenopause and protein is more important now than between my 20-40s because I'm losing muscle mass as we speak 😂 Knowing I should probably shoot for a minimum of 60g to 120g is really helpful. Thanks for the numbers.
Thanks for clarifying your position on this...makes sense. I long for a world where "How I get 80 grams of whole plant-food fiber!" or "Crushing 45 whole plant foods this week!" gets the clicks, rather than protein...which although it is important, is a nutrient that everyone who actual eats enough calories is already getting enough of. When those are the topics of passion and continued interest, we may actual see some large scale health improvements.
I go to the gym 2-3 times a week and train to failure, i play 2-4 hours of competitive level tennis on top of that weekly, and then i always play local league football ⚽ on Sunday. Yes im vegan but if i didn't fixate on protein i can tell you 100% i would have so much muscular soreness and body fatigue that i would have to change my lifestyle... And i dont want to so, i hope that clears up why im aiming for 70+ grams even on recovery days.
"For months, I felt exhausted no matter what I did-better sleep, exercise, nothing worked. Finally, I decided to test my vitamin levels, and it opened my eyes to what my body truly needed. It’s amazing how much a simple test can change your life. If you’re feeling drained, it’s worth exploring!"
You are such a breath of fresh air on the internet, Derek - keep it up! BTW how is the relationship with caffeine going, still off or is it ok now? Big love from Norway!
Bravo! 👏 I agree wholeheartedly with your higher plant based protein approach, especially as one gets older. Some of the most popular plant based doctors and influencers look frail. It’s not that I disagree with the science of longevity, but I don’t want to look or be frail as I get older.💪
100% my biggest concern about going plant based was protein intake. And after switching I actually gained weight(fat) due to over-eating to ensure I got close to the protein I wanted. This channel and some others helped me figure out sensible good protein meals.
I'm always a little wary of people saying "you don't need to care about proteins when vegan, you'll get enough" because it's not true in my experience. If you eat a well balanced vegan food, yeah, you'll probably get your 1g protein/kg of body weight and be fine. But in practice I know that I don't get that if I eat normally, and I have seen very quick benefits of adding a shake of proteins a day to my diet. I'm not particularly trying to bulk up but I'm disabled and pretty sick and cooking and eating enough to meet my nutritional needs is not always easy. Knowing good sources of protein is useful to me, and protein supplements help my life a lot!
Finally a new video that i can watch. I was wondering why Derek is taking to long to upload. I'm always waiting for a great video coming from simnnet nutrition. Keep it up. Another great videos waiting for 2025.
Hi Derek. I've been vegan for 10 years and I've never felt I've needed more protein and have explained ad naseum that I'm happy with getting protein from beans, nuts, tofu etc, etc,..I'm 65 and recently I've craved more protein. So I've listened, and for now, increased plant based protein.
Thanks Derek 5his was great. I’m planning to transition to wfpb on my food journey, I eventually want to have my Maintenance calories set quite high so I can totally enjoy a wfpb diet, I feel restricted right now as it naturally is more calorie dense and I’m on lower calories heading up. Keep up the great work I love your channel
Nice video Derek! As an Indian, I want to pitch in here. We consume one of the lowest amount of protein in the world, and are carbs (especially from grains like wheat and rice) obsessed. Most people think here that protein is only for body builders and it is unnecessary for normal people to look for protein sources. In the recent times, I have learnt that adding protein rich foods help cut down the amount of food one eats - especially if coming from WFPB sources. It is not easy to over eat and have a belly like an obese body. Thank you for speaking out!
Thank you. Good points...and its tricky to satisfy everyone's needs in a few videos...or thousands of videos across the media. Overload. Each person is different...and when people stop obsessing looking for a magic pill answer... Getting adequate overall nutrition on a plant based diet can be simple and can be a challenge. There are ample people going off a vegan diet due to health issues. Its not perfect. Those people are not wrong nor weak. And most probably don't show up in comments due to the negativity people just throw out there. I personally experienced some deficiencies on a plant based diet...some things take years to surface. Another issue is the intake versus what each person can absorb. That is different for each person as well.... If someone is willing to take one on one support...beyond just a medical doctor...looking at their whole life...I feel that is the best barometer for success on a plant based diet....happy person...happy planet...Stay warm.
💙 keep doing exactly what you’re doing. You are so correct that the world is obsessed with getting enough protein that providing these videos is the best chance of trying to convert people to a non meat diet. I just don’t understand how people miss the fact that all the animals they are eating, consume nothing but plants to make their protein. So they are always getting secondhand protein, combined with a lot of waste and stress in that animal.
Derek, there is so much contradicting information out there. No wonder people are so easily confused. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge and encouraging people to live a more healthy lifestyle for THEIR benefit! You are already doing it and it shows! No hypocracy here! Clean vegan/ WFPB diet is the healthiest diet to fuel, our bodies and we get everything we need to function optimally if we eat a variety of foods and colors. I don’t need to grow big muscles( I am an old lady), I just want to keep my muscles strong so I can still live my life well and not limit myself because my body won’t function anymore like it should. Your food is amazing and delicious and you eat A LOT! I really like that. So many people that try a vegan/ WFPB diet fail because they are hungry all the time because they don’t eat enough. They are so used to being told to only eat a piece of chicken breast the size of a deck of cards that they are afraid they will gain weight if they eat more than 2 cups of food at a meal. Then they are starving. Keep up the good work. Thanks for all the great recipes.
I really appreciate this video, Derek. It's really frustrating to hear fitness professionals, many of whom I generally respect, say things like, "plant proteins are incomplete & inferior to animal proteins." It definitely makes things more difficult when talking to someone who is interested in switching to a plant based diet, but they're apprehensive because they keep hearing that same misinformation. Thanks for what you do ❤
So reasonable and honest, thanks. I’d love to see a video on plant diversity - now we’re being told to eat at least 30 different plant foods a week. I know a single pasta salad could have 11 right off the top! How about “a week (or a day) of plant-based diversity?” 😊
Thx for this! I’ve basically stopped engaging in the bro-tein convo when they ask if I’m getting enough protein. Most ppl are so misinformed that it’s nearly impossible for them to accept facts.
💯🙌🏻🤩🔥. I wish i could speak more eloquently like this. When i try to lay things down for folks like you just did, i tend to get defensive and i know that comes across as combative. It stinks bc i don't mean to be at all, I'm just really passionate about it, like with politics, and since i hate to argue, i just avoid a response altogether. Thanks for continuing to put out great content that i always look forward to watching. 👍🏼

Nicely said! Id add that some of us just dont feel satiated without enough protein even when otherwise stufffed to the brim with carbs and fiber.

Great idea to use cronometer to illustrate that plants have all the amino acids! Helps to have a visual.
"It's not what you think". - It was exactly what I was thinking the reason was :D
Right on, Derek. It's a routine of mine to tune in here for the right information. Thanks.
Rational, logical, simple as usual thank you Derek.
Been watching your videos for many years now Derek and i love it. You are a very cool vegan youtuber ❤
Thanks for explaining! I always wonder why you push protein and now I get it.
Thanks for helping to clear up some of the myths around protein.
Thank you!
@@Simnettnutritionthanks for the quick response! Love your content…keep pushing plants 💪
Having a reasonable amount of strength and muscle is good for longevity too. It helps prevent falls and age-related frailty.
I’ve enjoyed your channel for years. Keep sharing!!! Thank you 😊
Brother keep up the great work, you inspire many people with your food and workout videos, me included!
Preach brother! Great video!
I love that you focus on protein! I don't lift, but I'm very active and when I don't eat enough protein, I'm constantly reaching for snacks. The reality is that anyone who's regularly working out is going to need more than the recommended protein amounts in order to grow and maintain muscle
You are such an amazing person Derek and it comes through in all your videos. ❤
Great day Heathy team 🙌 blessings
Thanks for this! Also, what most people don't understand is that the recommended amount of protein of 50 grams for an adult is not the ideal quantity, but the MINIMUM.
Any physically active adult requires more than that. If you want to build muscle, you need more than that.
Your tips and suggestions are perfectly in line with the scientific evidences. :)
Yeah man, protein is definitely my main reason for not going meatless (really just chicken breast). Yet you're still the only "fitness" or "health" channel I'm subscribed to. Can't say if I'll ever fully make the switch, but your vids are great!
Hey man I appreciate it! Thanks for watching.
I am in the same boat, came to say this.
Just try it for a month or 2 and see if it works (it probably does). Don't forget to get Derek's recipes 😉
Why would that be a reason if you can literally get the same amount of Protein from plant sources? Without supporting a very cruel industry.
Thank you.
Love all the real info in this video. Ty
Let me put everyones doubts at ease so check this out:
Ever since my school days I weighed between 83kg/ 182lbs to 116kg/ 255lbs and my protein at my lowest weight was at 280g and now sitting at around 100kg my protein intake is at 150g and let me tell you..
Always appreciate your content 🙌
You're awesome! Don't let the haters hate 💯
Great comments! Well said!
Thank you!
You are the best vegan TH-camr
Thanks for clarifying your position on this...makes sense. I long for a world where "How I get 80 grams of whole plant-food fiber!" or "Crushing 45 whole plant foods this week!" gets the clicks, rather than protein...which although it is important, is a nutrient that everyone who actual eats enough calories is already getting enough of. When those are the topics of passion and continued interest, we may actual see some large scale health improvements.
Telling it as it is, good for you, thanks for sharing 👍❤️😊
You are very reasonable… keep doing what I eat in a day … as I need ideas… love all your videos that focus on food 😊
Thank you so much for all you do!! 🙏
Great vid! Thanks for explaining in the way you do. And you look awesome too!
Love the sauces ebook, if you want a blue cheese flavour then fermented bean curd (the white type in a jar) is perfect for that!
Thanks for what you do ❤
Absolutely!
