    Devs Plot Recap
Devs centres around a tech company called Amaya. The company is named after the daughter of the CEO who tragically died years prior and the machine in devs is as much about bringing him closure as it is of bringing him agony over what could have been.
We’ll get into this more later but the CEO, Forest and his company have made leaps and bounds in terms of software and programming. This has caught the attention of several agencies and governments, namely Russia who sent in a spy named Sergei to run reconnaissance on the mysterious Devs department that exists within the company.
Sergei is brought in and sees first hand what goes on there and he tries to smuggle out the info but is captured and killed. Amaya covers up his death and Sergei’s girlfriend Lily tries to uncover exactly what is going on which leads her to the machine.
That’s a basic plot overview but there’s a lot more going on as well as an absolutely incredible soundtrack.
    devs the machine explained
    What Is The Machine?
In order to understand the MacGuffin that is the machine we have to understand how the universe itself works.
At the dawn of time, there was the big bang which sent atoms across the cosmos. Eventually, they formed planets and created life as well know it. Humans came into existence and then they lived their lives, had children, who went on to have children and civilisation was created.
Everything from the big bang all up until this very moment has followed a pathway, a chain of events that have lead us to the here and now.
Even you, yes you, sitting there reading this at this very moment, you are here because everything in your life that has happened so far has lead you to this moment. In fact, scratch that, everything in not only your life, but your parents life, your great grandparents, their parents and everyone in your family tree dating back to the second that your ancestors stepped out of the ocean has led you here.
Now what the machine at devs has done is that it has taken every single thing on the planet and traced it back in time, accurately recreating events from human history. It has then mapped them into a complex algorithm and then using this data it has then mapped out what will happen in the future.
They do a brilliant job of explaining it in the show with the use of a pen.
When you roll a pen on a table it almost seems random whereabouts it will land.
However, if you were to take the speed that the pen was rolled, the direction it was sent into, the weight of it and all of the variables that make it this specific pen, you would not only be able to see how far forward it would roll but you would also be able to trace it back to it’s point of origin.
Therefore if you had this information you could predict both it’s past movements and future.
Devs basically says that there are no random events.
    Absolutely none.
    Cause And Effect
Everything on earth is the way that it is because of cause and effect.
Even a coin flip can be predicted if you know the weight of the coin, the speed in which it was flipped, the surface it would land on and more.

What I enjoy most about this show is the broad discussion of ancestor simulations? I am curious, by polling, how many people view them as unethical? Is it wrong to prefer to live in your own universe? We are relatively close to this being a reality and I see good points on all sides. I view this as inevitable so right or wrong doesn't matter.

7:56 - The reason he won't accept multiverse isn't because he'd have to accept his daughter could still be alive but he's not with her, it's because he'd have to accept responsibility for her death. He insisted on not waiting 30 seconds for them to get home and instead, talking to his wife while she was driving despite her saying she hated doing that, so he blames himself for the accident, hence the conversation with Katie about it not being his fault if the machine works and him being damned if it doesn't.

    • @mkwilson38
      @mkwilson38 4 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      - also, he didn’t want to accept a multiverse because he wanted his daughter from his universe and not one from another. He didn’t want a single hair to be different. This was probably due to the guilt mentioned. He wants his ‘original’ timeline restored and no other version, is how I took it.

I thought this too. But as they say, many worlds is still deterministic which according their viewpoint means there is now free will. So he would still not "be at fault". So maybe it is that he is afraid of falling in love with a "copy" of his family, how ever so slightly different they would be. I think he talks about something to that effect briefly as well.

No matter how the machine works, i think that deep down he still blames himself, even if he got a definitive answer from the experiment. The reality is that he wants to escape responsibility for his actions, but in his subconscious he has already decided that he is at fault...

very different concepts. westworld deals with AI becoming self aware. devs deals a lot with the many worlds interpretation and simulation hypothesis. one thing they implied is that with what they achieved they opened the door to the simulation hypothesis being real. if the simulation in devs was indistinguishible from reality, then reality may itself be a simulation as well. we would never have any way of knowing for certain. so devs would be a simulation within a simulation and as Stewart says, it contains everything, it contains themselves and the universe they inhabit, and the devs machine inside the simulation contains another simulation of the same universe and it keeps going further and further down the line. that is a lot more complex and meta than westworld

The story of Oedipus really deserves to be mentioned here as an explanation to "well why didn't X character just not do Y?". This gist of the story: Oedipus was predicted to kill his father and marry his mother, he did everything he could to defy this prophecy and in doing so inadvertently fulfilled it. Edit: also many worlds and multiverse are not the same thing, the former has to do with quantum physics the latter doesn't.

Question from a layman: isn't the randomness of quantum mechanical processes exactly the reason why we don't have this kind of hyper-determinism?

    • @letopizdetz
      @letopizdetz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Quantum physics allows for zero point energy. Meaning, at any point, even though extremely rare, pairs of opposing subatomic particles can spontaneously materialize, annihilate each other and disappear. In a limited 4 dimensional space this is completely random and unpredictable. But if you don't believe something can come out of nothing, there has to be an origin. If there's an origin outside of our 4 dimensions, if you could step out of our frame of the universe and see everything that goes in and out, and you could do this without changing the state of any of the particles and forces you are observing, then suddenly the whole universe you are observing would be deterministic.
But as long you live in 4 dimensions and there is no way to fully observe things without interacting with them on some level, the universe remains random. You can estimate what is probable, but you'll never know 100% of everything that will ever happen.
PS Quantum physics is incomplete, there's a reason we don't use it for everything. If you try to apply it at a cosmological level it would produce far more energy that we have observed so far. So either there is something still missing in the equations, or there's a whole field of physics we've missed. There's a reason we use quantum for the very small and special relativity for the very large. They each work almost perfectly to predict behaviors at one scale, and break down at the other scale.

I think the show addresses this.
The CEO guy believes we live in one deterministic world following a single chain of events, but the machine doesn't work properly under that assumption.
They struggle to get clear predictions because they assume the uncertainty comes from inherent randomness in QM.
Our model of QM essentially takes a particle + information about the environment as inputs, and spits out a distribution of possible outcomes for that particle.
A quirk of this distribution is that you can actually extract the % chance for each of the possible outcomes.
The machine starts working after the kid codes in the Many Worlds interpretation of QM.
Many Worlds takes the distribution of possibilities at face value and assumes all of them do happen; but they happen in different "worlds". The worlds exist all at once, in parallel to each other.
Suddenly, the math isn't giving you wishy-washy predictions for a single world, but absolute predictions for many different worlds.
They reveal at the end that the machine actually simulates countless worlds. When asked to display something on screen, it picks one of them, which is why the images are clear.
This is a guess, but I think the machine picks the simulated world that best matches the real world at that moment.

I heard they hired real developers from google to put real code on the screens as sort of an Easter egg to people who understand it rather than the matrix who just made up vertical green code that in our reality means nothing and is indecipherable. Any links or help would be great I don’t know code or anyone that does.

If he lives in a linear determinate universe, like he believes, then he is absolved of guilt as there is no possible way his daughter could have been saved. He wouldn’t care that she might exist in a world that he isn’t in, he even expresses this twice in the series. Technically Stewart actually killed them by turning of the magnetic field that held the transport up (which Forest and Lily were in), and then claims he did it because the machine must be destroyed. He could have waited until they were out and then destroyed it. It almost seems that Stewart was self-fulfilling the prediction of the machine by killing them, thus proving both Forest AND Lily to be right....Forest, because the machine ultimately caused their deaths, and Lily, because she made a choice not to shoot Forest. The point is actually moot once Stewart decided to intervene. I love this show, but that part of the ending was a bit sketchy for me.

Quantum computers are "magic" and can "instantly" break all cryptography, so they can do whatever they plot requires. Getting the information into the quantum computer is just part of the magic of quantum computers and viewers are expected to not think about that stuff. The closest they came to hanging a lamp on it was a brief mention of requiring a computer for every particle in the universe. 🤷

@@user-vn7ce5ig1z don't they extrapolate everything from the dead rat table? @@dmw798 Yeah this really bothered me. I figured that's where the 'fiction' came in for this science fiction, because otherwise everything was very hard science. But sheesh thats a HUGE gap for me.
Even in theory if you *could* somehow extrapolate what all the particles are doing by the ones next to it... how in the HELL can you have enough computing power or even storage space to compute all that??? Lyndon (was that lyndon?) said it would take up a sht load of storage to extrapolate out more... so how'd they get that storage????
In the last scene, Katie had to talk to the senator to get help to keep the computer on, so clearly they don't have infinite resources...
The whole problem with the idea of Determinism is that you would have to know literally EVERYTHING to actually predict or even accurately simulate something that has already happened. I just don't see how that's even remotely possible, even with a quantum computer as big as theirs.
We already have quantum computers not much smaller than that one, and they can't even simulate a few atoms that accurately. The idea that we can simulate the entire world... the entire reality and all other realities with a computer that can fit into that little box is absolutely absurd.
I'd be happier if they simply said it was close enough simulation.. or even that they were building some sort of window or portal to alternate realities (but I think the show Fringe did that).
In any case, as someone else said in another comment, determinism is unfalsifiable, and therefore not actually a scientific principle at all.

I believe that free will is a fallacy, however in a future where a machine like this is possible and you can have an accurate vision of your future, all of a sudden the code of life is laid bear and from there you would have an oppurtunity to exhibit the first true act of free will by actively choosing to alter the future that you see. You wouldn't see the universe as a single loop but instead a never ending slinky.

    • @elijahclaude3413
      @elijahclaude3413 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Idk about free will being a fallacy per se.... but it is true that 'consciousness' is explained as a man sitting on an elephant... the elephant is your subconscious in which is a more primitive 'mind' that basically does everything in reaction to its environment... so you as the 'conscious' mind doesnt actually have control over what you do, but you can prod the elephant to go in certain directions by various means, and thus in that way you have indirect control over your life.
But I think the idea of Determinism is kind of like the modern-day version of fate and the gods telling us what to do. It's an idea that is fascinating to some of today's biggest thinkers, but ultimately it is unfalsifiable and thus not realistic or even scientific.
You simply cant know everything about reality in order to predict or even simulate something. So free will may as well be true, because a deterministic world is just not something we can ever prove (or disprove).

I agree that the universe is deterministic, but not that that can be simulated - someone said that to do that one would need a universe-size simulator, and it's the one we're in. This is my take on it: As far as possibilities of human scientific endeavor, everything is deterministic except for the quantum uncertainties. What that means, is 1: yes every effect has a cause that is in principle always traceable. 2: discrete quantum effects can in principle (limited by our quantum model) not be predicted. So, determinism works backwards, but is limited (or divergent, rather) forwards. That is not to say that determinism is "false", just that it doesn't mean what people think it means. It means yes, everything you do is a product of all your compounded input experience, but the unpredictability doesn't mean you get to call free will. :)
Given that, the devs machine should have been able to scan backwards with clarity without the need for many-worlds interpretation, but not forwards. One cannot help but think that this would conflict with the special relativity-derived notion (recall "slicing the space-time loaf"-explanation) that space-time not only contains the past, but also the future...
Except just now it struck me that the devs perhaps doesn't actually scan backwards at all, but always scans forwards from the big bang... ooOOOoOOo

"The machine" is a quantum computer, this is now in our reality, what makes it powerful is today's computers/cpu's work with 1 or 0 and takes time to process the 1's or 0's the quantum computer's are 1 and 0 at the same time, yes this is hard to understand, since anything asked of a quantum computer it is answered as you ask/code the question. So if you ask "if you know how one particle reacts to another particle with quantum computer the answer is instant" hence if you ask/code what if you compute all particles interacting with all particles and the result is instant hence rendering reality or past reality in real time, I'm not sure quantum computers can operate at this level, the writers seem to assume they do.
If they do operate at instant results this would be much scarier then having a conversation with Siri were she actually understands you, Siri would just answer the question before you speak it.

even if determinism is true, that the current state of the universe is completely determined by its prior state, it does not follow that the prior state of the universe is determined by the present state. it could indeed be the case that any number of distinct prior states could result in the present state.

Spoilers: I thought they were going to go a completely different direction with this. I thought the kicker was that shutting down the devs actually shut down our reality. Remember that everything in the simulation (once "fixed") was the same as in our reality. And that included a devs of their own in the simulation. And their devs had a devs... etc. So, if there is an infinite number of devs layered after each other, what are the odds that we are on the top layer... the original?
So, us perfecting devs would basically be something that top layer just did and ALL the simulations are simulating. And since it is an exact copy, that means that for ANY devs to be shut down then all of them all of the way up to the top layer is shut down. And if we aren't on that top layer than that means we cease to exist.
The way they ended it in episode 8 was still interesting. Though, it required a TON of stuff take place that was never shown. I guess that was okay, though it is a little upsetting since you basically watch 8 episodes only to find out that the real story wasn't really shown... that you were just seeing a side story of sorts.
Btw, the static they were seeing when trying to look past that point opens up an entirely different possible story line for a season 2 if they come out with one.

maybe if you don't look at it (into the future), it is indeterminate. however if you look at it, like through this devs machine, then events take a determined/absolute path. Schrodinger's cat, the double slit experiment, quantum etc. So it's possible to look into the future, but doing so cements it in stone. very cool to think about.

I have just watched DEVS until episode 3 and boy, is it a ride.
But here are the problems: The machine is for sure a Quantum Computer (also mentioned in episode 3). But Quantum Mechanics is directly against the uncertainty principle. It is not the first time, that people theorize that you can calculate everything - only by having sufficient data - but reality is not that simple. And especially the point, that the computer has to "focus" on specific events, would exactly influence the result (as per quantum mechanics) - not even talking about the butterfly effect (...).
So it hurts my brain a little bit, that on one hand, the series like to be scientifically very smart... on the other side, does not apply some of the best known principles of Quantum Mechanics.
I was also a bit perplexed by the murder of the Russian AI specialist. I mean he didn't yet submitted the stolen data - it was not an "accident" it would be very untypical to go so far (inclusive faking the suicide CCTV etc.). It has been a bit of lazy writing there... it could have been an accident etc. which would have been more believable.
I think the whole building / computer is also a bit too remote sci-fi! Does anyone know, how a real lab looks like?
The biggest gripe I do have though is about assumption (of this video and also the suggestion of the show) that all people working there are just doing nothing? Where is the progress with this machine coming from (the old dude seem to have contributed to the picture overall?!). So no - the hints might have been the Russian programmer to get used to the machine etc. - but not, just to watch. The whole idea of the boss is, to get a clearer picture and better predictions.
And the biggest question is: who built the quantum computer? And programmed it?
Look- if it would have been in a further future, where machines (...) would improve and develop machines, the mentioned premiss would be more logical. But the time of the series seem to be very contemporary!
So yeah - the series is very interesting and pretty cool... but it has a lot of plot holes and a lot of issues.

Given Katie, Forest, and Stewart all believed in Devs, I think the idea of proving the multiverse is what motivated the narrative of the whole show. Now, take the multiverse somehow being news to Lily and her obvious parallel to Lilith/Eve. Does it really make sense for Katie to "upload her data" into Devs so she can... knowingly live in a simulation? It seems cruel on Forest and Katie's parts.

It’s like how quantum immortality is, they are infinite possibilities that your current self can never reach. What is the point of any alternate universes when you cannot reach or access them?
Same with a deterministic world, it can only be deterministic given you not know absolutely all the variables or what will happen, because you can conciously choose to use the predicted outcome as a variable to do the opposite, making it a paradox. Then, if you do not know what will happen in a deterministic universe, what is the point of calling it such?
