A college professor seeking to liven up his course had the following extra credit question an an exam. "Is Hell exothermic or endothermic? Provide sound evidence to support your answer." One of his students submitted the following answer. He started by providing all the reasons that would support both an exothermic Hell and an endothermic Hell. After several paragraphs of this he got to the main evidence and its implication. Here is his analysis. When I asked the pretty coed in the dorm room across the hall if she would sleep with me, she said she would sleep with me "the day Hell freezes over." She has not slept with me which means Hell has not frozen over and therefore must be endothermic. He received full credit.
Thermodynamics gives bounds on real engines. Moreover, the explosion of the fuel mixture is not even approximately reversible. How can thermodynamics be of any use in designing real world internal combustion engines?
I dont see how the refrigerator is a closed system. Power goes in, heat and cold go out. I get the the pump recirculates the refrigerant, but the pump is one part of the system. There are condensers and evaporators that release cold and heat out of the machiners, much like an internal combustion engine.
