You have 4 downs (named 1st down, 2nd down, etc.) to try to get at least 10 yards. If you make it 10+ yards, you get a new set of 4 downs. When the announcers say, "they need 3 yards to get a first down," they really mean "they need 3 yards to get a new set of 4 downs." Saying "get a first down" is just shorthand for "get a new set of 4 downs."
@@troycantrell1549, my pleasure. Also, when the announcer (or the screen) says something like "2nd and 7", that means it's currently 2nd down and they have 7 more yards to go to get a new set of downs (i.e., "a first down").
@@ratatouillefightclub the overall objective is to score a touchdown or fg by running plays. How many plays? You start with 4. If you want 4 more chances, you get a 1st down. Then you get another 4 chances to score but you are little closer to the endzone. You can score from wherever but the closer you get, usually, the better your chances.
Exactly this. Came here to type the exact same thing. When you say they are trying to get a first down, it's technically incorrect, but we have been hearing that for so long it is a known thing. I can understand the confusion from people who don't watch football.
Here's my football explanation: Downs are like chances, you get 4 chances to move ahead with the ball by at least 10 yards. If you try 4 times and fail, your turn with the ball is over. But if you can move ahead by 10 yards or more at any point (even if it's your last chance, or 4th down), then your chances reset at whatever new location you just reached. So now it's your first chance again (1st down), except you're closer to the end of the field, which is what you're trying to reach. Now you've got 4 more chances to move ahead by at least 10 yards. If you can go all the way and *touch* the end of the field, it's a touchdown, essentially a winning chance. Hopefully this is helpful.
Here's a analogy. Imagine you're at the Eras Tour, and Taylor is performing a series of songs, each representing a part of her setlist. Each song is like a "down," and your goal is to experience the entire concert. You have four songs (downs) to enjoy before you get a chance to move to the next part of the concert. If you really enjoy those songs and get into the spirit of the show, you get to experience another set of four songs. If you miss out or don’t fully enjoy those songs, it’s like missing out on part of the concert, and you might not get to experience the next set of songs. To get to the end of it and have her play Karma (the touchdown), you need to enjoy several sets of songs (first downs) throughout the concert. Each set of four songs brings you closer to the grand finale, where you finally get to experience the full performance and score that ultimate concert experience. But yes, it is weird and I've sadly learned to accept it lol
Maybe try thinking noun vs verb for the football question. The beginning of the drive is first down the noun and the other use is the process of converting the count, being referred to as first down.
The confusion of "get a first down" is because it's contraction of "get another set of downs" or to be more accurate "get another chance at a 1st down". This explanation is coming from a foreigner who has to learn the rules of football in my 20s because apparently guys had to know these types of things in the US.😅 To use a callback from an earlier pod, it's similar to how Nikki had said that just saying "postpartum" tends to stand in for "postpartum depression" even though the postpartum part just means after delivery.
The goal is to get a touchdown. You have four chances or downs which r #'d 1st down 2nd down 3rd down and fourth down to get 10 yards or a touchdown. If u go 10 yards w/out scoring a touchdown your chances start over with a fresh set of chances or downs #'d 1-4. If u do not reach 10 yards or score a touchdown in the 4 chances (downs) the other team gets the ball. u can also basically give up and punt the ball on 4th down to the other team so they have further to go to score a touchdown in opp. direction or try for a field goal if u r close enough for your kicker to make it thru goal posts. That was a lot harder to explain than i initially thought and now I think I confused myself
The goal is to move at least 10 yards. You get 4 chances or “downs” to accomplish this. First down is not the goal, it just means you start over on your 4 chances. The goal is to score, not get first downs.
Have you considered or tried higher end vintage shopping? I think it would be a much more fruitful experience than going into a Zara. Any person running the shop *should* be able to help you find your style in a more authentic way than how a traditional salesperson is incentivized to (if you want the help). A well curated vintage store should have everything from a statement stage outfit to everyday basics. But don’t expect to hit gold every time…that’s the twisted nature that f vintage
I can’t believe how overpriced Zara is. What a joke. When I lived in Mexico, we got Zara clothes for super cheap. It was like a forever 21. And then when they first came here in the mall, I went there to get a little sundress for Miami and it was cheap. shitty material and super overpriced.
DOWNS CONUNDRUM - I believe it is like you have 4 time the football is down (set, hike) to attempt to get knocked down passes the first down point. So it's football down count then knocked down passed the line?
Maybe originally it was first down has been achieved but they shortened it to first down ? But I get you Nikki, it should be 1st attempt , chance , try etc . 1st attempt at a first down . 😅
Inculpate pairs well with exculpate, its opposite. Exculpatory evidence is what exonerates you. Taylor would be so proud of you for improving your vocabulary. Also, you might enjoy hearing George Carlin's bit comparing the differences between baseball and football.
I noticed Nikki hasn’t been doing the spray tans lately as she’s been blinding us with those pale hockey sticks. 🦵 I wonder if she ever goes to the pool or lays out in the sun. I feel like I look sickly without a tan.
I am surprised at how you never ever even slipped on the gender of this upcoming interview. BTW here's another word that could be changed "finial". I used to have a yearly calendar that had a word of the day on it. Did you decide to go a little darker with your hair?
Brian is such a valuable element of the pod.
He really is.

I’ve had multiple people try to explain this to me and this is the first time it’s made sense. Thank you!

Kept waiting for Nikki to comment that Taylor Swift used the word mercurial in one of her songs (Illicit Affairs)
Probably where she first came across the word and had to look it up and make it part of her vernacular
I love how Brian makes Noah laugh ❤

This is the first time anybody has ever explained it in a way I can understand!

Fun watching Nikki learn sesquipedalian words.
I have so many guesses on who it is. I need a full recap about this interview! I'm seated.
Where is she doing the interview? On the podcast..?

I think its Kamala that she is interviewing.
You are trying to get a new set of downs. The first down just happens the be “first down” in a set of downs.
