- Narrowboat life is all about living on a narrowboat but....every life is different and even the boats, although narrow, are different. I am travelling with Colin who has a Gardner Engine. A lot bigger and different to mine. A brief discussion about the start up procedure and there will be more to come.

I once heard it said Gardners were the RR of UK Diesels, nice lump. You might say to Colin that my Dad used to insist that you won't get a true sump oil reading unless you wipe your dipstick.
I'm sure Colin would ordinarily do that. I know I do...most of the time. Thanks Terry.
Well if your Dad said that! it's good enough for me, I will do that, however , just a thought , if you wipe the dipstick, then put it back in ...... the true level of oil reading has gone , because it in now the tru level -minus the oil on dipstick which in the rag😇
Met Colin at Norton junction after he had only been on the boat a few days. Loving it already. Old engines in a dedicated engine room are a thing of beauty and it will keep you occupied during those long winter days. I know my lister JP does.
And in the winter when you need to check out it’s all working, it keeps you warm and a drys the clothes. I agree it is nice just listening to it. Thanks Pete. Enjoy.

I am privileged to be the current custodian of 'Grander' my name for him, he will in service long after I have shuffled my mortal coil. I do hope he does not fall victim to the new wave of ill informed folks with their political agendas .

You just gotta love those old engines. I think I'd be very tempted to add a few feet to the mooring fee to have a dedicated engine room for a nice duga-duga engine. Colin is a right character. As a Scouser I approve of his meal! A cooking challenge for you, Chris. Make a bowl of Scouse. Definitely put the Worcchesheeshtershire Schscauchce in. They say it's optional. No it's not! Nothing better than a big bowl of Scouse after a cold winter day.
I don't know what these critics are talking about. Your videos have become my Wednesday tradition. I watch them while getting ready for work and you're always up to something different. Keep em coming mate.

Mistake I think on crumble rub with finger tips butter into flour,then when crumbs stir in sugar👍compress down for firm crumble, or leave loose for lighter crumble.

Thank you for the tip Jean. Next time I make crumble, I’ll give it a go. It has put me off crumble for a while though. It was dreadful. The carrot nose and potato eyes were a nice touch at the end as people mentioned the spinach last week. I think there are many who may have thought it looked differently! But a smile is what counts. What’s in next weeks?

I enjoyed learning about Colins engine, he seemed very proud of it, however, I think you made a great point when you simply started your engine with a simple flick of a switch.
Nobody can call this weeks vlog 'samey' after that weird and wonderful start, it made me laugh.

Morning Chris. When I make a crumble I don’t compress the crumble topping onto of the fruit. Helps it to stay lighter. I also sometimes cook the crumble separately on a baking tray - which makes the crumble topping a bit crisper all the way through. Great video Chris. We are very familiar with that bit of the Oxford/Grand Union. It is only about an hour from our marina - so either the start or end of our journey. Have a great week. Debbie and Roger.

I am looking forward to the next video of yours..I think that people who move onto a narrow boat are looking for peace and quiet..and want to get away from the hectic life they once lived..I might be wrong but for years I have asked this question . And have always got the same answer .. they seem to always say that they have had enough of being pressured at work or at Thier homes..and they decided that living on a narrow boat was the lifestyle that would give them the peace they were seeking..????

I’m pushing a vid out on Sunday as I discuss life on an electric boat. A couple who have lived a few weeks on theirs. The point you made rings trues with them at least. But…..it’s a job living on a boat unless you chose to allow the boat to suffer. Always something to do but it is in slow time which makes a difference. Thanks Wayne.

Nice vlog Chris / I do like old engines and their unique sounds, with the practicality of having its own engine room for maintenance… but is it worth the trade off for space compared to an under cover engine, I don’t know (maybe would need a bigger boat) 😂

Thanks Jon. I agree with the engine thing and apparently, it comes out in stages so needs to be taken apart in situ. That’s a marina thing but then I know if I need a replacement engine, so will mine. No1 thing…..look after the engine. It’s a life line. More of Colin to come over the coming months. Brasses are minging again. DIdn’t take long.
Nice shiny brass! You can use a fork to mix the crumble, does the same job as fingers but less messy 🙂 also maybe stew the apple a little bit first, makes it nice and soft. Colin's cassoulet looked yummy. Great music as ever, good laugh in the beginning, glad you didn't fall as the corner of the table was right in front of you!

Chris, If you're having back problems after long periods of standing, you might want to give Skechers "arch fit" shoes a try. A friend of mine suggested them to me, what a revelation. I rarely wear any other footwear now.
Brilliant vlog. Always entertaining - somehow even making a crumble was great to watch. You might want to use a bit less crumble mix in proportion to your apple - it would be slightly less stodgy. I have to say I’ve never put salt in a crumble - sugar yes, but not salt. Watching you mix the apples and cinnamon with your hands made me laugh!

Nothing wrong with mundane - most people’s lives are pretty mundane most of the time, whether they are in big houses or small boats. You make it sound more interesting than a lot of people so I wouldn’t worry about a few whingers. Keep on keeping on Chris.
Out of interest, what are your ear plugs? Do you listen to music, or are they to reduce engine noise etc?

Thanks for the comment and support Mishka. There is a lot of this sensationalist stuff that I don’t like yet felt compelled to try that one out. It did it’d job but I refuse to follow the creator as it’s quite frankly bollox. Of course you’re right about mundane lives. Its hard to create truth in a entertaining way. I have a three types of ear plugs, all which have music piped through as it’s easier when filming. I don’t get told off by TH-cam that way. The white ones are Sennheiser Momentum 2 and the others are JBL. They allow ambient noise so I can listen to conversations and the engine as well as answer the phone which rings often when I’m cruising and very little when not!

The winter is a challenge for us all Chris but Spring is almost here and that makes such a difference.
The rain is still here but it’s certainly warming up and the extra light makes a shed load of difference. Clocks change end of the month. Wow, that’s gone quick.

Great vlog once again Chris, thank you for sharing. That engine was a piece of art and if you are an engine buff, a beautiful thing to have, however as I'm not particularly a petrol head I would likely end up with an engine like yours. I think in a previous vlog I mentioned that I too have some history with VP and have carried that on through amateur radio. If I had a boat one of the first things on my to-do list would be to install a collapsible mast and at minimum a VHF system for local repeater Comms or even simplex occasionally. HF would be more of a challenge but easy enough to get a fan dipole up for a couple of bands, always someone out there for a QSO or in a time of need. Great stuff and that crumble looked really tasty.....😊
I was always fascinated by HF comms. It’s an art. However, it’s great to know someone is on the same frequency so I can really understand whether the antenna is working or not. Directional antennas was always a dark art but really effective. In the dessert, I increase the range of the radio equipment by increasing the ground plain and frequency. It should never have worked but the dry land made the attenuation decrease. As for the crumble…..I was better at getting comms with a HF radio with no-one listening on the other end!

Dad who get round the course the fastest and the most correct positions it was a few cans of beer , Say again . Was common with radio uses in the normal speech😂 have a good one , you probably need a seat detachable type of when you’re at the backend steering too take the Weight off your joints .👍👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧👍
Thanks for the comment Tom. I joined up as Clansman came in. Say Again was still a phrase used a lot. I still sue it now. It’s the tell tale sign of an ex squaddie. The seat of the back is a useful thing and I now understand why people have them. Never considered it at the time.

Well, thank you for showing this.. I am not coming over until September now.. and I always said to colin (him) that if you get an engine like that, do not leave me with the boat .. Now I have seen how you start it... do not leave me with the boat....😅.. l much prefer the way you start your boat.. but i can see why he likes it it takes planning...and he loves to plan.. I tell him, "You love planning so much you plan you next you next breathe." 😂 I know he is really enjoying the boat life ..or being away from me 😅 ...keep having fun ..Heather
But Heather…..think of how warm you’ll be in the winter when he is up the top moving the boat. Free heat and a great drying room. Noisy perhaps but…. Now the planning thing…..I’ve identified that and hopefully by the time you get on the boat he may have relaxed a bit more on the planning side. He’s got your brother to look after from Saturday. That’ll keep him busy.
You are getting to know him quickly .. if you and get him to relax and let thing just be.. and my saying to him is, is it life-threatening, and will it be there tomorrow 🤔 has you may be guessing we are total opposites. I am a little maybe to layed back.. until it comes to having a mess, then I can't stand mess lol, but the one great thing about Colin is when he is your friend he has totally got your back....keep having fun ....

Your friends boat having that particular engine on the "inside", so a few Q: 1) is that "Gardiner" easier to service (spare parts etc) ? 2) Are there "other" styles of "Gardiner", for example, a smaller size but still can be used inside ? Lastly, would this need a special cover (for insurance) or is there just a generic insurance cover for most narrowboats ? Thank you for your help.
Itemized checklists are something I am familiar with. Starting up a 1912 vintage electric tram requires both conceptual knowledge and the ability to follow a checklist. Communication is a safety essential: radio checks are carried out, with the sender identifying who they want to speak to, and then identifying themselves, exactly as you did.
The crumble looked good--sometimes the seemingly simplest things take some practice to perfect. One thing I like to make is granola. It keeps well, and it can contain as many ingredients as you want. For me, it's important to eat as many species as possible since I can't digest meat properly. Eating 35 different species a day is fairly easy with granola and salads. Another way to get lots of variety is stewing mixed dried fruit. It can be tossed into a bowl of granola or yogurt--or both. Great for the gut biome.
I rather like Colin's sartorial eccentricity. I don't wear a bow tie, but I almost always wear a canvas vest, which protects all those areas with sensitive surgery scars and messed up nerve endings.
How many people were looking at the carrot and potato "still life" arrangement as you were talking about mundane life? More than will likely admit it, I'm sure. 😂
Thanks Peter. I think all those who like to look after anything do what they think is a proper job. I was told once, properly is good enough. Even if you have a bad day and you do the bear minimum, if you do it properly, it'll be a good enough job.
The crumble. It tasted ok for the first few bites then it went to the ducks. I don't think they came back for more which is why they dispersed quite quickly. The veg thing will be a regular feature for ma short time. See who watches out for the changes. Granola. Good idea.
I just don't think we dress up enough. And I like showing that I make an effort to show my respect.

I'm in the "kick tyres and take off" set so don't understand the the idea of carrying a lump of old iron around. However, it must make a good drying room so not all bad. 😄
I did that in the car. The VW just worked and the onboard computer told you when anything was wrong. The engine is one of those thing many don’t pay too much attention to. My head is in the engine bay at least twice a week. However the Gardner drying room….absolutely.
.. Needed a bit of custard or cream Chris Cobber - but you can't beat a bit of company at mealtimes to help suck it all up.

I could be wrong, but I thought I remembered you saying you were putting your coal ash in your composting bins. I watched another narrowboater today who said they throw out their ash, because coal ash is toxic to plants. I also think I heard you say you were going to use your compost in boxes of flowers. Now I'm wondering if that will actually work.
It is stated that ash can spoil plants but if it is used in the winter and should be dug in. I add it to duty out the contents and to be honest while it was a though to grow flowers, I can’t see that ever happening. So my use of the ash is mainly to make the process easier to manage. To put ash on the towpath and not dig it in is unsightly and the local residents have put out fires caused by boaters not allowing the ash to cool. I do what I do as it works for me. I would have turned the engine over to bring up the oil pressure before starting.

Possibly. But hopefully that'll be someone else's problem. There are plenty of standard marine engines that are still making the propeller turn40 years on. I don't have that amount of time left on the planet.
