They sure did everything to keep Richard off camera. Most of the video shows the horn guys...Richard is singing his heart out!

Yea it is unfortunate.. reminds me of that little movie called last waltz, not much of Richard there either. But hey they always considered him the leader from what ive heard, certainly is my fav member.

Levon considered Richard to be the lead singer, but Levon was looked at as the de facto leader of the group. He had the longest tenure of the 5, having come up to Canada with Ronnie Hawkins.
Funny: one of Levon’s cousins used to live in my community. She was a waitress at my parent’s favorite local hangout. One night, she and my Dad got into a conversation about music, and she mentioned that her cousin was out on tour with Ringo. Dad asked who he was, figuring on a roadie or production guy. “Levon Helm” was her answer. Shocked, my Dad blurted out “LEVON HELM is YOUR COUSIN??? Oh, my God...my son is a huge fan of his!” Got a “salute” and an autograph from him on his autobiography after a show in Chicago in 96. 2 of his uncles are buried about 20 miles from my home: both of them are “Helms” and not “Helm”.

@@robertbruce6865 True, Richard was not a "leader"...just the best singer.. The leader fight was between Robbie and Levon.

@@thomash642 Essentially, it was Levon, until he started in with the Heroin. Then Robbie took the reins.

Thanks for this! The “Rock of Ages” era Band is so immeasurably superior to the relatively pedestrian “Last Waltz” stuff. Until now, I’d only seen video of “Don’t Do It” and “W.S. Walcott” from the Academy of Music stand, taken from the DVD included with “The Band: A Musical History”. Mind revealing where you found this video? Is there more to come, like “This Wheel’s On Fire”? 👏🏽 Great stuff, thanks again!

Comes from the academy of music box set. No more film besides the songs you mentioned and snippets of several others. I don't have any info on whether other songs were filmed or not.

If you like The Band, you should check out Ursa and the Major Key. They have a song called Only The Sky Is Blue that sounds pretty similar to The Band, and their whole album is influenced by The Band, Floyd, Grateful Dead, Beatles, etc.

Great version, but was the cameraman drunk, or did he have relatives in the horn section? Or both? Also, was Garth in the group at the time? WTF. Loved the band but the camera work was incredibly frustrating on this clip.

An amazing performance from Richard Manuel.
The Band was truly counter culture, as most groups of their era were exploring and pursuing psychedelia.
Bob Dylan and The Band wanted no part of that scene.
Canada's greatest band imo by a country mile.... The Guess Who at number two.

I think the camara is back stage, close to the drums and face to the horn session with the great Alen Thousandr (the horn arrenger from New Orleans), in the back chair, and Howard johnson on tuba and bariton sax, is not a profesional video mix, maybe just for them to keep it like a memory..I'm sure the video is just home made...

So... question is... from which night does this video comes from, I'm pretty sure they do have more footage, i've seen it in the webisodes from the live at the academy release.
Need more.... why is RR not more eager in releasing more stuff that is not from TLW?
GREAT VIDEO, THANK YOU. Do you happen to have the rest of the songs from a musical history?
