hi phill? can i write a 5-paragraph essay following this kind of structure or should i stick to a 4-paragraph essay? 1)introduction: "the authors expand on the issues..." 2)text 1: presentation of the main topics 3)text 2: presentation of the main topics 4) personal opinion based on the two texts 5)conclusion: summing up the texts + my opinion
Hi! I have a question, I have a C2 profficency exam book to practice and when I look at the essays, the introduction says that it must have identified the main point in each text and explain them in your own words. For example: Both texts support....The first one mentions...The second text considers... That is different to what you've said in your video and I'm quite confused. Great video though!
You can approach the essay in C2 from many different angles. What I show in the video is what has worked best for my students over the years, but there are other approaches you can try. See which one works best for you and then stick with it. :)
These essays about set texts are require the candidate to be familiar with a given book that they need to know before going into the exam. I have never bothered working on these with my students because they would need to read a whole novel in preparation for the exam. Also, from January 2024 this option will be removed from the test so you don't need to worry about it anymore anyway. I hope this has answered your question.
@@teacherphill thank you for your fast answer. Yes, I’m aware of that, but I'm taking the C2 next week and have recently (re)read Northanger Abbey since I’m a Jane Austen fan. I figured it wouldn't hurt to have another option. There are lots of materials about the novel online, which is great to help me prepare in terms of content. However, I’m finding it difficult to find models or information on the format/structure of the part 2 essay online, since there are no texts to "summarize and evaluate".
I have a question on the use of personal language. I heard you saying that you managed to avoid using personal language, but you did use 'we' a couple of times throughout the body of the essay, so I was wondering what you meant by that
When I use 'we', it doesn't refer to my personal opinion or me personally, but rather to everyone as in 'society as a whole'. Of course, you could replace the pronoun with other words, for example, 'society' or 'everyone'. I hope my answer clarifies this for you. :)
@@teacherphill Need to thank you again, as I have passed my writing exam thanks to you!!! :) I used all of your videos and the articles you wrote on C2 writing and they were apparently very helpful!
@@teacherphilli guess the person meant that you did use „we” in your essay at least twice, so should we or should we not? There are only as many impersonal constructions, I kind of find it difficult to be completely distanced from what I’m writing about
Just passed my C2! I doubt I would've passed the writing portion if I hadn't watched your videos. Thanks!
That's great news! Congratulations!!! :)

You can structure your essay in any way that makes sense to you and to the reader.
@teacherphill thank you! I was worried it wouldn't be a proper essay because it has more paragraphs, but it's the structure I'm most used to.
Thank you Phill!!
My pleasure! :)
Thank you so much

I have a question, though: Does an essay require a title?
No, it doesn't. You can choose a title if you want, but it's not necessary.
What about essays in set texts for part 2? How do they differ from the essay in Part 1, since we do not have the 2 texts as a starting point? Thanks!

you used "we" in the 4th letter of the essay
What do you mean with 'the 4th letter'?
