    Since you're on to some less common types of flutes - could you review a wooden flute one of these days? It'd be so interesting to see and hear one in comparison/contrast to the regular metal flute.

    Hi Joanna! I hear you talk about tone color, but I’ve never quite understood the concept of it and how it works. Can you make a video about it?

      Haha, sure, I'll note it down! ;)

    • @ChristopherPettersen

      My thoughts are perhaps think about it in terms of other instruments. When you learn about colors as a kid, you learn to make comparisons to things that are that color. So, you could learn that the deep, rich sound of a cello is gold, for example or whatever color of sound it makes you think of. Helen Keller once said she always imagined red as being like "a sharp blast from a trumpet". I think tone colors are very subjective to different people, so I go with what the sound makes me feel and what I can determine from the attributes of it I like.

    This comment is unrelated to the video but I thought I would go ahead and comment it.
    So, solo and ensemble is coming up in exactly 14 days from today. I have never been to solo and ensemble thing before. I am completely nervous for it especially since were going given the ensemble music around 2-3 weeks ago and that is not a comfortable time frame for me to learn a somewhat difficult piece of music. Yesterday marked the half way point of practice and our band director said if we couldn't play it all together and have it sound like the piece we were playing then we couldn't go compete with it. So with that said, on Tuesday we had practice with our ensemble instructor and it was a complete off day for me. I could not play as close to as perfect as everyone else was. To top that all off the instructor kept telling me how important my part was because I either have the melody or I have motor/metronome part and how I always have to try to play louder than everyone. The reason why he says for my to try to play louder than everyone is because I can play loud(but pretty) but only when I am practicing by myself and it is physically(??) impossible for me to play louder than six other people. I just don't have the lungs for that.

    Intonation can be quite different from a curved headjoint to a straight one.
    That’s why I chose a straight silver headjoint for my Powell Sonare alto. I also preferred the sound of solid silver, but opted for a plated body to lessen the weight and stress on my right wrist.
    (They make an alto thumb port!)

    I love the sound of alto flutes! So gorgeous, I love listening to Jeannine Goeckeritz playing her alto flute. When an alto flute is played well, I almost prefer it to the concert flute, because I don't like the sound of the low notes on the concert flute very much.
    And as someone else already mentioned, I'd really love to hear how a wooden concert flute sounds.

    Look at you!!! ((So pretty)) Yada yada yada, disclosure, disclosure, disclosure.... And here we go!!! So in comparison, if you think about it, the bigger/lower the instrument, you're able to do things looser (widen the mouth or drop the jaw) If you think about switching to a piccolo from a flute, you tighten/close the jaw more. So your drawing makes complete sense to me. Being a multi single reed player, I feel that too, between the Bb Clarinet and the Bb Tenor Sax. I actually heard the difference between the acoustics between the straight v curved head joints. Thank you for the review... I don't think I'd ever be interested doing a larger flute. However, as a professional flutist, it's awesome how you stay true to your instrument. I'm a multi instrumentalist, so I don't have that connection to just one instrument that I admire out of Sir Galway, Ms. Perlove, and yourself. I noticed that most people that are poly instrumentalist, do not have as much control and as much in their repertoire as a mono category instrumentalist. Noticed I said most. There are a few great poly instrumentalist. The 8 bit brigadier comes to mind. I am so impressed with his control on each of his instruments!

    Excellent review!
    Actually the difference between a straight and a curved head joint is quite pronounced. Mostly, because the main body of the flute + curved head joint is closer to the microphone, thus it is slightly louder. Assuming of course you were playing with the same dynamics.

  • @kirstybeilharz1064

    When you say the "mechanism is more or less almost the same", is it actually the case that the 570 and 670 bodies are EXACTLY the same and ONLY the Headjoint (silver-plated vs. silver) is different? Also can you do a demo starting from the bottom of the range. You play scales and alternating notes from the C upwards which really compares the same range as a regular C flute but the chief point of comparison would be the effect of the different headjoints of 570 and 670 on the LOW register. Can you please play some more in the low register and a characterful piece composed for alto flute please? I would love to hear more rather than the embouchure/mouth/airflow conversation which takes half the video ... just being honest. Besides that surely will be personal from individual to individual. Thanks.

  • @whydidyouresign

    Thanks Joanna! I really enjoy your vids!
    And now for a question....
    Do all alto flutes have plateau keys? The ones I see online always seem to. And when I looked at the available alto flutes from FCNY, the thumbnails all seem to show plateau keys.
    As I think about it, it would make sense that alto flutes would be closed hole as it's a relatively uncommon flute, my guess is that it is most often a doubling instrument and would make the transition from C flute much easier. That's my guess anyway!... What are your thoughts on it?
    Thank you again!,
    New sub.

    I've never had to deal with playing a transposing instrument so not too familiar - would you play the written music using C-flute fingering for what the notes look like on paper (but the sound is actually lower), or is the music written like the actual lower sound and the player has to figure out different fingering?

    • @DanielCruz-dc5zl
      @DanielCruz-dc5zl 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      chinechinecherie You would read the music in a different key. So you play the fingering that is written but it sounds lower

    • @chinechinecherie
      @chinechinecherie 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I see! So with a transposing instrument, would you pretty much always need to have music that's specifically transposed for that key when playing with other instruments?

      Wellllll... since you're here, FCNY is a good start! ;) I've reviewed some beginner model flutes that you may want to start on. Some good ones to look into would be Gemeinhardt, Di Zhao, and Yamaha (among many others!). If possible, I would try renting one and seeing how you like it. Once you get the hang of how to play the flute, you can maybe try ordering in a trial of a few beginner models from FCNY and seeing which flute suits you the best. You'll know once you play them--the flute really does choose you. ;) All the best!
