@@agusgomez7284 Just looked through what they've got, and I personally don't care for many of them as Pokemon (but that's coming from someone who grew up with and much prefers the Gen I/II designs, I'm hardly unbiased). In my opinion, some of them feel distinctly "non-pokemon-y", to the point where I legitimately can't imagine them standing next to other Gen VIII mons. That said, I do think a lot of them are cool standalone designs if you just take them for what they are, but as Pokemon I don't think they work. @@DankDaHerbalist Don’t. I don’t care. No one, and I mean no one, cares whether or not gen 1 felt more “geared toward boys.” Literally everyone could have a place in the fandom. Many of the gen 1 Pokémon were specifically made to appeal to girls, and most others were made to not lean one way or the other. There are very, VERY few Pokémon made to appeal only to boys.
Copperajah almost looks like a gen 3 Pokémon there, reminds me of flygon & aggro together, but it still just works for gen 1 I think in the final piece
Jaiden Skorup I think it’s the color pallet and complexity. Gen 3 is similar to gen 1 &2 in design philosophy, but the GBA wasn’t restricted by monochromaticity or resolution like the original Game Boy. So there were more colorful and complicated designs to gen 3, just like this copperajah design.
Well with the Kanto and Johto regions being designed at the same time, I wouldn't be surprised if they had a few drafts for the Hoenn region Pokemon. Although Hoenn had a more retro aesthetic to me. Kanto and Johto had a comic book appeal to them.
Really cool designs. I particularly like the gen 1 Wooloo you made. I've tried to draw a fire sheep fakemon weeks ago and... man, it was hard to make it something different enough from wooloo and mareep designs. I love how you get references from other pokemon designs to make it unique but familiar at the same time!

My god the cut designs were so much nicer. Also personally like the cut version of gyrados better than the actual version but i could see why others wouldn’t.
Gen 1 woooloo is amazing, I want to see dubwool in a follow up video! Copperaja has too many colors, I dont know how to fix it or if the concept just doesnt mesh with gen 1 but the bipedal look oddly works super well for an elephant pokemon, definitely has nido king and queen energy I would almost try a teal color scheme with orange accents dropping the darker green, even though I like the dark green, the real feels more gen 1 when set alongside the nidos and rhy boys
You basically read my mind. I can't quite picture what Gen 1 Dubwool would look like but I know I'd want it on my team. For Copperajah, I was thinking make the orange the base color, because it's the most earthy color in the design, and then making the green/teal tones the accents. Basically Cufant's color scheme. I didn't know I would love a bipedal elephant design so much, but I do!
@@morgann2938 I think the larger amounts of teal on copperajah vs cufant are meant to be increasing verdigris patina, which turned the statue of liberty from is clean copper look into is blue green iconic appearance. I think letting it stay majority teal shows durability while cufant is meant to be the fresh original prior to being weathered and toughened by time and exposure to air and moisture to make that copper carbonate
Y'all have great ideas! While watching the Copperaja attempt, I noticed both references (Rhydon and Dragonite) shares a striped stomach. I wonder how combining that idea with the majority of corrroded teal would look?
I think the Copperajah is a little over designed and could benefit from a lighter, more desaturated color palette, but Centiskorch and Wooloo look perfect, imo. I'd love to see more videos like this :)c
A lot of people forget that gen2 was basically made at the same time as gen 1 since most of the pokemon were just cut from gen1. So when looking at art it's best to reference up to crystal art
Yes but that was much of the design philosophy in Gen 1. Look at scyther, he also looks like a dog even though he’s an insect. I think she nailed the centiskorch design.
I feel the "simplicity of gen 1" was replaced with too much inspiration from scrapped designs and pokemon with little relation to the subject. Rather than adding features and almost completely changing the concept (ie, Centiskortch and Copperajah) I feel changing the shape of their existing features would've worked much better.
Aside from having a more varied color pallet than most Gen 1 mons, I thought Copperajah turned out pretty well. You have some legitimate points about Centiskortch. The mane and ears look cool, but it makes it more of a bug-hybrid than the original.
1. You can talk all you want about wacky alligators, terrifying worm Gyradose, and Paris, but you can't convince me you didn't just draw a tiger head on Centiscorsh's body. 2. Looks like a Vulpix in despite need of a hair cut riding a Ponyta that sprouted a horn. (Speaking of there's an almost even split of single and double horns. Single horns seem to be added to the designs that need something to make them not just the animal they're based on, whereas if a creature is supposed to have two horns, it is so. The Cubone and Crabby line show this well.) 3. Probably the best one. You kept the conceptual idea while bringing it back to the Gen 1 style. I think Kangaskan would have been a good inspiration for making the skin markings look tough like a steel type.
What really stood out to me about this was how well the digital coloring matched the real media watercolor feel of the original illustrations. I've personally tried doing the same myself in Photoshop with less successful results, so more information on what software and/or brush settings were used here would be greatly appreciated.
I love the use of white in the Ken Sugimori art it looks like it's unfinished and they just put in a bit of the color to remind them what color to use later but that's just the finished highlighting it's great
I didn't like Centiskorch and Wooloo redesigns, Gen 1 Pokemon had simpler designs, as said on Part 1 "Simplicity is also key with all of these designs". Centiskorch has too many features especially on its head, Wooloo too, it actually looks like a Wooloo evolution. I think the choice to redesign those two was unfortunate because both of them already have a simple design, the only thing that should be changed is the design of their features, Wooloo for example, just give it Gen 1 eyes, ears and legs and that's it, no need to add new things like eevee's "scarf", a bigger horn and a more visible "fringe".
Gen 1 Wooloo is AMAZING and the most authentic design in this whole series so far, imo. If someone told me that was always a Pokemon and I'd just forgotten, I might believe them.
The gen 1 copperajah looks good. Except the pose. Gen 1 poses usually look like the Pokemon was doing something, like attacking or swimming or something. The official art actually has a pose that is very early gen.

I am really liking this series, the early generations' watercolor designs (including humans) are some of my favorites to scratch my nostalgia. I appreciate the limitations you put on yourself for the Gen 1 styled Copperajah, with steel type not available. I really wish Pokemon still looked like how they did in the Gen 1 and 2. Something about that style is so nostalgic and undeniably Pokemon. Don't get me wrong; I love James Turner. He's given us such beauties as Golurk and Trevenant, and I'm glad he was art director for Gen 8, but something about your Gen 1 Centiskorch makes 5-year-old me very happy. Not to be rude but I believe the fire whiskers of centiskorch are supposed are based off old samurai helmets. Albeit the art may have been different in gen 1 I believe the idea should have persisted. It's kind of like drawing Charmander without a tail flame or Blastoise without a cannon.
Y'know, for as lazy as Gen 1 designs were, you gotta give it to 'em, they did the best with what they had. They had an 8-bit game, so they had to make designs that could fit within a certain amount of space AND be recognizable enough for players to tell what they were catching and what type the thing was from a glance. Mad respect to early Game Freak for that.
ZenZach Honestly I don’t really see much of a difference. Fundamentally the only real difference I see in the Pokémon is that they have slightly different art styles but overall neither generation really has a specific style.
I think the Centiscorch is pretty good! Copperajah just seems too complicated to be in gen 1, though. It's colors are pretty different, too, so it was a pretty tall order. The thought you put in while re-designing the Pokemon was really good. I'm enjoying seeing all you guys' takes!
The idea of Gen 1 Copperajah excites me The mad thing is, all 3 of these Pokemon gave me Gen 1 vibes, like if Gen 1 came out now they'd fit in perfectly Copperajah's challenging though damn, It's a bit mad looking

A few things I want to point out is that Centiskorch has Alakazam's head and that the while Copperajah has the gen 1 style, it's too complex and passes better as a beta, since they have crazier designs than the actual gen 1 pokemon. Just little review of your work, and I really think it's still spot on to the art style.
Generation 3 and 4 had the best designs by far. Most generations prior were too bland, and generations after were just too eccentric. I hope they go back to that era.
I agree with the other comments that Copperajah looks more Gen 3. I distinctly remember as a kid not being a fan of Gen 3 Pokémon when they first came out because I felt their designs didn't look like "proper Pokémon" and were too rounded and either oversimplified in their shapes or overdesigned (guess those attitudes existed even back then haha). The Copperajah here I think somewhat reflects this: while your body for it is very Gen 1 - the simplified lines and clean triangles on the patterning are more akin to Gen 3. I also think having 3 main colours on it is too much: I'd be inclined to choose either the turquoise or the orange for markings and drop the other, since Gen 1 designs tended to favour more restricted colour palettes for each 'mon. Likewise with Centiskorch, I'd have dropped the cheek(?) tufts and put the fire mane there instead to reduce the number of elements in the design.
i think that the braids being removed from Wooloo makes the redesign look a lot more like a fakemon rather than a redesign of an already existing design. especially with changing the colors as well. the braids were a major part of what made wooloo look like a pokemon rather than just looking like a sheep.
Very interesting re-designs with Wooloo's being the most Gen 1 looking. I actually like the Pokémon designs from Gen 5 and beyond but of course being a 28 year old who started with Pokémon Red and soon after Yellow, I can appreciate the nostalgic looks of some of them. Pikachu, for example, has been knowingly evolving in design and the Pokémon company didn't allude to it until recent times and I'm not talking about Alolan Raichu lol.
Your Gen 1 version of Centiskorch looks great! While I like what you did with Gen 1 Wooloo, it feels weird seeing it with one medium-sized horn. You did keep its fluffiness. It makes me wonder what a Gen 1 Dubwool would look like. Gen 1 Copperajah looks okay, but I definitely prefer the original. Regardless, you're very talented. Keep up the good work!
Ah yes, the Gen One rule: when in doubt, take a regular animal and stick a horn on it

Y'know, for as lazy as Gen 1 designs were, you gotta give it to 'em, they did the best with what they had. They had an 8-bit game, so they had to make designs that could fit within a certain amount of space AND be recognizable enough for players to tell what they were catching and what type the thing was from a glance. Mad respect to early Game Freak for that.

ZenZach Honestly I don’t really see much of a difference. Fundamentally the only real difference I see in the Pokémon is that they have slightly different art styles but overall neither generation really has a specific style.
I think the Centiscorch is pretty good! Copperajah just seems too complicated to be in gen 1, though. It's colors are pretty different, too, so it was a pretty tall order. The thought you put in while re-designing the Pokemon was really good. I'm enjoying seeing all you guys' takes!

I'd never noticed the colour thing, but you're right. Gen 1 Pokemon are all coloured, not black and white. It's pretty interesting design-wise.

The mad thing is, all 3 of these Pokemon gave me Gen 1 vibes, like if Gen 1 came out now they'd fit in perfectly

A few things I want to point out is that Centiskorch has Alakazam's head and that the while Copperajah has the gen 1 style, it's too complex and passes better as a beta, since they have crazier designs than the actual gen 1 pokemon. Just little review of your work, and I really think it's still spot on to the art style.

Generation 3 and 4 had the best designs by far. Most generations prior were too bland, and generations after were just too eccentric. I hope they go back to that era.

I agree with the other comments that Copperajah looks more Gen 3. I distinctly remember as a kid not being a fan of Gen 3 Pokémon when they first came out because I felt their designs didn't look like "proper Pokémon" and were too rounded and either oversimplified in their shapes or overdesigned (guess those attitudes existed even back then haha). The Copperajah here I think somewhat reflects this: while your body for it is very Gen 1 - the simplified lines and clean triangles on the patterning are more akin to Gen 3. I also think having 3 main colours on it is too much: I'd be inclined to choose either the turquoise or the orange for markings and drop the other, since Gen 1 designs tended to favour more restricted colour palettes for each 'mon. Likewise with Centiskorch, I'd have dropped the cheek(?) tufts and put the fire mane there instead to reduce the number of elements in the design.

I think if you made the blue parts on Copperajah orange as well and lightened up the darker tones, it would work way better as a rock type

i think that the braids being removed from Wooloo makes the redesign look a lot more like a fakemon rather than a redesign of an already existing design. especially with changing the colors as well. the braids were a major part of what made wooloo look like a pokemon rather than just looking like a sheep.

Very interesting re-designs with Wooloo's being the most Gen 1 looking. I actually like the Pokémon designs from Gen 5 and beyond but of course being a 28 year old who started with Pokémon Red and soon after Yellow, I can appreciate the nostalgic looks of some of them. Pikachu, for example, has been knowingly evolving in design and the Pokémon company didn't allude to it until recent times and I'm not talking about Alolan Raichu lol.

While I like what you did with Gen 1 Wooloo, it feels weird seeing it with one medium-sized horn. You did keep its fluffiness. It makes me wonder what a Gen 1 Dubwool would look like.
Gen 1 Copperajah looks okay, but I definitely prefer the original.
