      Rittik Ghatak and Debaki Kumar Bose are far greater filmmakers than Ray, but the capitalist culture seems to encash in only what would bring them profit and attention. It's time that Ghatak and Bose are given their dues, and have their real worth evaluated.
      Indians, more so the Bengalis themselves are the most reluctant in assessing the real worth of Ghatak and Bose and realize that Ray was not as talented as them, and proclaim the same before the world. Ray could never capture the finer interplay or the intimacy of human emotions as effectively as the two of them, which could be attributed to his bourgeois outlook and upbringing. His films lack that punch of disillusionment or hopelessness that permeated every frame of the films Ghatak made, or the philanthropic touch telltale of human suffering and social discrimination in Bose's films.
      Ray is a bit too much overrated and blown up by Indians as well as the foreign media. For an outsider to know the real India, it is imperative to watch the films of Ghatak and Bose, not the ones with celluloid sophistication of Ray. This is the lacuna of mainstream media. Once somebody has in some way gained a recognition, they will continue to blow his or her trumpet for as long as the world exists, until somebody with equal establishment succeeds in convincing them with something different.

I would like to place him in ranks with Buddhadeb Dashgupta or Purnendu Patri for that matter. They seem at par to me. Actually, Ghatak is in a totally different league altogether. All eight of his films are equally masterpieces and one is no less captivating than the other. One may endlessly wonder while watching his films, that how exceptional and varied they are in structure, elements, form and treatment of plot, albeit remaining connected with the same repeating theme of the pain of Bengal partition that tormented the film maker throughout his short luminous lifespan. I fall in love afresh everytime I watch those films and they never get old, albeit being so limited in number ( just eight 😥). That shows the true mastery of a gem of a film maker - one that doesn't need to impress with a good many number of films like Ray, but leaves his audience bedazzled with whatever limited crop he has produced. Tbh, Ray's later works in color are plain bogus, with perhaps the only exception of Agontuk. He should've stopped after Goopi Bagha Trilogy, I feel.

Director Mr ray have done good research before making the movie. Since he was from advertising background and wrote the script very well. Satyajit ray, Hritwik ghatak and mrinal sen was three pillars of Bengali film industry and a major part of Indian cinema. These directors cinemas were shown with ingmar bargmen, akira kurosawa. Akira Kurosawa once said that, "Not to have seen the cinema of Ray means existing in the world without seeing the sun or the moon." But such a shame that Indians aren't even watching ray , ghatak or sen s cinemas. And which is even more shocking is that after the death of Rituporno ghosh (another great bengali director) Bengali cinemas situation turned so bad. The film industry which once ruled not only indian cinema but also international cinema now is making only cheap commercial cinemas.

Now as a critic i don't need any others opinion because i know what is world standard for films and for you who is just a general indian audience and want some more indian movies as great ok then you consider them while i will go with the universal standard.

    • @claustrophobic0015
      @claustrophobic0015 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      SOHAM BOSE man actually you are dumb ass because you can't understand what a critic is trying to express who said here about indian standard if there is only indian standard then every movie released here would be great and you itself admited that cinema is a universal art and there is no special country thatcan specify a standard taking cinema from different country will make a standard just see apu trilogy is a great film and every one knows its one of the greatest film ever made. it influenced every nation and then comes india, India is still making dumb masala film for stupid audience like you. Even tge Iranian cinema is evolved because of Satyajith ray indirectly do you know that. And now you can see when each and every country is producing good films except India. I don't know whether you can understand a thing from your attitude but i will try to explain and rest is your business. Let take x is just a normal sized fellow but when a tall (y) person cones near him we call him as a tall person and when another guy comes with the same hight of y it doesn't make any difference so when 1000s join we call x is short so the hight of y is the standard or don't you know the meaning of standard yet you lol. And then comes apu trilogy which is definitely a great film and match the standard of greatest films and the movies of rithwikh gahatakh and some other will just comprises with the standard below great. And the remaining movies like bahubali and all are just waste and Indian film industry has the most number of such waste This is the most simplest way to explain something still if you can't understand anything just meet some psych artist for better treatment and i know that iam smart in certain area including this. so it was you who was trying to play smart you dumbass now man just leave me alone i don't have much time to waste with stupids. And you will be one if you can't understand what i mean yet.

Who the fuck are you to comment about superiority of Bengalis or any other ethnic group for that matter, what the fuck have you achieved? Art and cinema becomes great once illiterate people like you stop comparing ethnicity and nationality with it.... Ever heard of V. Shantaram? He was a great Marathi filmmaker, he was also a legend... Even as a Bengali , I am ashamed to be able to speak the same language as you . How can you bring caste and religion here ?
      You are very pathetic person , sir . Change your way of thinking and just appreciate the the great people based on their work and not because of their caste and religion .
      As Mr. Satyajit Ray said " we have a very backward audience" . This line fits very well for you , sir .

      Lol what does "bengalis" have to do with this? This has to do with a good filmmaker who just happened to be Bengali. But more importantly he happened to be an indian.

    Bengali films of the 50s and 60s were comparable to any classic Italian and French films, and superior to any Indian movies ever made. Thanks to the British, we had the Bengal Rennaisance. And the upper class Bengalis had an unique worldly and Europeanized culture at the time.
