    In a quest to return to his climbing roots and to advance the understanding of California’s giant Coast Redwoods, Chris Sharma recently embarked on an unprecedented free climb in a Northern California forest glade. Using only his hands and feet and protected from falls by a rope and harness, Sharma collected valuable data from a soaring Redwood, located in a city park in Eureka, to measure tree water status as an indicator of how it has been affected by the current severe drought. Red Bull worked closely with two UC Berkeley Tree Biologists in preparing for and executing this project.
    The UC Berkeley tree biologists are currently developing funding to evaluate the impact of the current historic drought on redwood trees and forests in the Santa Cruz Mountains near the southern edge of the redwood range; a link to their fundraising site can be found here: win.gs/rgad

      +Giancarlo Zucca On shorter trees, you throw the rope up with a thin, slick line and a small weight. Then, you use the small line to pull up your climbing rope. On taller trees, people use a bow and arrow with a line or fishing line attached, or a slingshot shooting a fishing weight attached to fishing line. Either way, once you have the throw line up, you pull up the climbing rope.

    I can understand why redwood is such a desirable tree I mean the qualities of the wood and the oils in the wood can really stop it from rotting in some very moist environments but when I heard that they cut down so many redwoods back in the day that they even used these trees to frame houses wood that never saw a drop of water it just seemed like such a waste!

    • @sndspderbytes
      @sndspderbytes 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      What were they supposed to use? That was the wood that was available. That was for house built up until 1955 or so when there were so many trees. It wasn't until Michael Milton and other wall street vulture capitalist used a leverage but out to steal ownership of one of the biggest companies in terms of available board feet of lumber permitted. From 1982 or 1983 The wall street capitalist pre sold an outrageous amount of debarked logs absolutely massive, for rich folk in Japan and other markets. The Japanese sunk unbelievable numbers of logs in the Tokyo harber to let them take on a hardwood like density so they could slice thin veneer of old growth Redwood and laminate them to ply wood so rich people could have a redwood office or a redwood exterior. More old growth trees were cut down in the early 1980's till the mid 1990's than had been cutdown in the 130 or so years prior to the illegal leverage buy out. The wall street vulture capitalist Milton or Milken got busted and was forced to make amends regarding the liquidated pension for the loggers and mill rights and Clinton made him hand over the head waters track and the community turned it into a day hiking area no charge no paperwork just a beautiful hike and a river that the steel head use to lay there eggs. In the end it wasn't the home builders in the 1900's to 1950's framing with old growth redwood that wrecked the environment and ruined the logging industry. It was rich 1% er white collar criminals and elites from Japan and parts of Europe that combined devastated the logging industry which had no choice but to replant with Douglass Fir because DF produces the most board feet of quality lumber in the shortest period of time of any tree on earth. From sprout to harvest in 40 to 60 years. Still not the same as a 1500 year old moster of a redwood tree that towers close to 300 feet or higher back in the day. Like always the people blamed are the working class home builders of the past who built modest but quality homes for the average family and the architects that had built the victorian redwood mansions 50 or 60 years earlier. None of that was the culprit when it came to destroying the ecosystem and forcing the loggers and mills to shut down and find other jobs. The actual culprits were from wallstreet and illegally did leverage buyouts using junk bonds not worth a crap to pillage the forest in less than 10 years all by rich people and for rich people. They are the ones that ruin everything and never get held responsible. Americans worship the elite and subconsciously blame the poor and the working class for the horrendous actions of the chronically rich. Until the people of America place the blame on the ones that bought the country and stripped it of its treasure. as long as the middle and upper middle class blame the poor and working class for all the crimes against the long term well being of the land and the people, the rich will always be able to waltz through life holding all of the wealth while bearing none of the blame. The wealthy have just about won but there is still time to put the blame where it belongs not to have any real effect on the wealthy but at least to rake over the narrative and blame the culprits and not the working class and poor.

      on the outside of the bark yes but the inside is so dense and strong that some of the redwoods that have been through massive fires still have fresh and alive still standing wood on the inside of what looks like a burnt tree on the outside but it is only the bark burnt

  • @jumpinjahiri

    All those climbing these ancient trees are contributing to their demise. One or two scientists help us to understand what is taking place up there in the canopy. However - do you remember a teacher pointing out to you as a young student - if one person picks a flower, ok, but if everybody picks a flower, they will all be gone! And your teacher was right. If you truly revere these trees, admire them with your mind, and let them be here for your great, great grandchildren!
