One of the worst things about reaction channels is when people laugh because they think they should. There are far too many (usually American) people just constantly trying to appease Brits by reacting to British shows that British people love, but then laughing at things usually because there's studio laughter giving them a cue to laugh. There's no secret that people who love something want others to love it too. But the reactions always need to be genuine. Which they are on this channel. I watch channels like this because it's a reason to rewatch shows I love.

The "cringe" is definitely specific to UK humour. We go to the places that make you feel uncomfortable, and it's funny because you can either relate to the situation/know a person like that irl, or the character is shown in such a way that it's obvious that they're flawed but not intrinsically evil and there's the glimmer of hope that they might have a redemption arc or get their comeuppance. It's the cringe that makes it so bad it's good, in the same way cheesy pop makes you smile even if it's terrible. But definitely culture-specific and not funny haha but more uncomfortable awkwardness.
    Thanks for the reaction!

I can understand Douglas isn't for everyone - the humour is meant to be at their expense. Unfortunately powerful people never do face repercussions, which I think is the point. Douglas is a clown, uses his money and power to play around and chase women rather than work and nobody really notices the difference.
    Very true to life.
I can understand you'd find it awkward though, especially given the portions of the show that are really unpleasant. It's not aged well in places.

As a Brit I'm quite used to laughing at terrible people like Douglas in comedies. But if that's not for you that's perfectly fine.
Fortunately the D&D subplot is so good it overshadows any other problems. The way it takes stereotypical workplace lads and puts them in an unfamiliar hobby that they initially dislike, only to have them actually get invested is brilliant.

Perhaps it's a more British leaning thing, the cognitive dissonance required to find Douglas genuinely funny. It's like Cartman from South Park. He is a disgusting character but is also very funny, and just because you genuinely laugh at him doesn't mean you in anyway sympathise with his views.

I definitely understand your aversion to a lot of the Douglas humor, but I find it darkly funny because I've worked with enough people in positions like that to know how real it is. Not to paint with a broad brush, but most people i've worked with in CEO/executive/sales type positions are very much like that and this show uses Douglas to exaggerate it but the truth is still there. Those people only fail upwards and never really face consequences for their actions so the humor is grounded in a sad reality where all we can really do is laugh about it. Not defending the actions or the characters, but it's just funny to me because it's too real.

Your views on the show are fine to be honest, I wont pretend I don't find it disappointing when you end up disliking moments I have never had a problem with but that's that. I saw this show when I was a child so most of the undertones / adult jokes went right over my head but I still found it hilarious because of how silly the show is. Now I have grown up I am more aware but it is still one of my favourites.
At leased for me it seems when people grow up or enjoy something for years and they see someone else begin this journey part of the enjoyment comes from seeing their reaction as a way of going back and re-experiencing their first watch through the other persons eyes, unfortunately many people see any kind of criticism towards the thing they love as an attack against them, I actually was and still am a little like this with some things and have to constantly check myself to make sure I'm not taking something personally, however other people seem to forget that criticism isn't an attack.
Being disappointed with someone's view on something you love is fine, you're allowed to be and your allowed to express your side, however it is also just as okay for that person to disagree.
By the way, even though you don't get along with Douglas try not to let that colour your opinion of the actor. Matt Berry is a brilliant comedian, I've been thoroughly enjoying him in the What We Do In The Shadows tv series, and also loved Year Of The Rabbit before the second season was unfortunately cancelled.

Well said at the start! I'm not usually one to usually comment on videos but obviously still have opinions and respect others too. That being said I admire the way you have handled this as I can see how difficult it would be to find humour in subjects so close to the reasons why people have opinions on Graham linehan. Cool constructive conversations is definitely what is missing from this world because people are so quick to segregate themselves from others with different opinions. I welcome a different perspective or opinion and feel we can only grow and progress if we do listen to each other and consider things not from our own jaded look on the world.. we forget we are all unique and real greatness come from collaborative thought and analysis not to mention respect. I definitely feel some jokes in this show haven't aged well but it depends how it's perceived.. I still laugh at many of the jokes considered too far in today's world because I associate it with a certain time when I saw it. Its very tough to remove our "modern tinted glasses" to watch something and not associate with todays topics and situations, but, in conclusion, if that tells us anything, then maybe we have grown more than we know.

I am genuinely curious about the reaction to Douglas. Like his father he is a caricature that doesn't exist in the real world. His behaviour is spectacle to be mocked. The humour is sort of in the ridiculousness of him. I feel like it might be a UK comedy thing but then you have characters like Todd in Scrubs or the Dean in Community. Zapp Branigan in futurama. Dwight in The Office. I am curious what makes some caricatures read as straight characters to some people and others not...

oh, mate! don't let others bully you into thinking you're too sensitive or something. Like what you like, dislike what you don't like. Everybody else can bog off! Graham Linehan is a very divisive character. So much so that he is a cause celebre for the "is it possible to separate the artist from the art" debate. I think he's a thin skinned man-child that cant handle legitimate criticism of his art and needs to call the whole thing "being cancelled" to feed his cavernous ego. Its a giant hole that cant be filled by the looks of it. He's not alone, there's plenty of entertainment industry attention seekers at it. ...take your own position on it...or leave it alone to enjoy the art, as you see fit. Nobody else's business...

Cringe humour is a fundamental of British humour, I would wager that if you took the top 10 UK Comedies from the last few decades probably 9 (if not 10) of the 10 would contain cringe humour. Whether that says something about British people being inherently warped to nastiness or whether it says that British people have the ability to find humour within subjects that other nationalities would not touch is a question thats open for debate.

In a perfect world you would have Graham Linehan on for an interview and dive into his motives behind the character of Douglas. For myself I can keep him strictly in the comedy realm and don't find this offending in any way. After all he's clearly portrait as a horrible person. Maybe his purpose is to intentionally create an uneasiness in the series to elevate the funnier moments. Much like in some songs where there are short moments of dissonance and rhythm breaks just to pick you up again and emphasize what's coming. I like that contradiction. And if you follow more of Matt Berry's roles, you will find, it' has somehow become his schtick to be a somewhat controversial and blunt character. You either like that or you don't.

The show is very self-aware of the misogyny and only celebrate it on the surface level. The main lesson or deeper meaning is that the result of being asses is they're deeply sad and unfulfilled. Douglas himself felt the happiest when he explored his homosexuality with April but the tragedy is he could'nt get past his upbringing to accept himself and be truly happy. The guys in this episode learn how fun it can be just being "nerdy" and playing adventure games that I'm willing to bet when they follow through and tell their other friends about role playing games they'll be made fun of and will probably go back to their old selves. The main lesson is just be yourself and if you don't fit in with 'normal' society don't force it.

I think the Douglas character hits different for those of us who discovered the show prior or unaware of the creator's personal views coming out. I always enjoyed Douglas because I viewed him as a sort of Archie Bunker type of character, where it's his personality and worldview that's being satirized and is actually the butt of the joke. But I suppose Archie would have come across very differently if Norman Lear was a known racist.

I grew up watching this show and other British series. I fully understand your reasoning. That parts here and there hasn't aged well. But even back then I didn't find the lgbtq or sexist jabs funny. I did find them uncomfortable but British humour isn't done the same as the US kind. It is ment to be uncomfortable. Swedish humour is pretty close as well.
One thing that this show does well is the set up and pay off. Which is one of the reasons I like this series.

What it is with IT crowd:
It was written by graham linehan, and he is well known for having no filter when it comes to controversial subject matters. He takes jokes to their cringiest extremes sometimes, then pulls back, and sometimes he hurts people's feelings. He recently got "cancelled" for voicing his opinions about woke culture. A lot of people agreed with what he said, but he definitely annoyed a lot of people.

I know this video was posted 10 months ago, but to speak to your issues with the problematic elements of the show, sometimes it's hard to remember that if something was produced a while ago, they might have been working with information that we don't have nowadays. Old movies used to feature people smoking without any issues. There was an old episode of Tom and Jerry I saw once that had a disclaimer before it because there was a scene with blackface. It can be very tempting to look at old media through the lens of the information we have nowadays and cast judgment as a result, but try to keep in mind that the world has changed since these episodes were made, and if anything, you can see these moments as evidence of the progress we have made as a culture and a sort of freeze frame of the culture at their time.

My argument regarding Douglas not facing the consequences for his reprehensible actions would simply be - how often does anyone like Douglas face the consequences for their actions in real life?
I think id once again make the point that this sit com isn't trying to say anything. It doesn't have a moral message it's trying to impart. It's a cartoonish, heightened reflection of types of people who work in just about every office in the world. It's surrealist and absurd, that's the whole gag.

  • @vanburger

Douglas is just the villain. To be a villain you have to say some crass things, Douglas is very recognisable to many British employees. I've had at least 3 bosses similar to him. He's anti feminist homophobic, and has no understanding of the modern transgender issues we find we have today.

Fawlty Towers or The office (UK) would be interesting to see you meet an episode of. Michael Scott in the US Office is an example of the difference of humor and acceptance of discomfort, he's an ass, but lovable, whereas his British counterpart David Brent (in a tradition going back to Basil Fawlty and beyond, which includes Douglas) is a relatively irredeemable asshole throughout. Sometimes it's finding the level of cringe you're comfortable with, and it is perfectly understandable that you're uncomfortable with Douglas.

We are fans of your channel BECAUSE you are honest with your opinions when experiencing new shows. For my part, I really didn't notice the problematic elements in Graham Linehan's shows when they first aired, I just found some stuff markedly less funny than other stuff. Thank you for being able to recognise and articulate the reasons why you find some of it objectionable.

The instinctive repulsion you have is a good trait to have, a lot of people around the world, including myself have been taught to laugh at the outlandish and insane. But outside of a comedy perspective the outlandish and insane are just people who have no self-control and people with disabilities. Unlearning something is difficult and having to accept some things are bad to laugh at is also difficult. I don’t know what my point is of these ruminations is but, you’re a good man Neil.

I find it fascinating how characters like Douglas or David Brent can so divide opinion among people who otherwise share a similiar sense of humour. I don't, however, think it has anything to do with wokeness - as I assume some people in the comments have theorized - but rather empathy with the character.
In the scenes with Moss and Roy we, the audience, laugh WITH them because we like them. In scenes with Douglas half of us laugh AT him, becuase he's a buffoon, whereas the other half fail to do so because they feel embarrassed either for him or for whomeve he's interacting with instead.
I think that's why "the Simpsons" and "Family Guy" are so popular. Making the characters literal cartoons the audience are able to detach themselves enough to not empathize and just be amused with the situation.
As for your comment that "he doesn't face any consequences for his actions" I think that's an unfair standard to which to hold a sitcom. Just think of "Friends". About half way through the characters become quite awful against each other, lying and manipulating all the time. There might be exceptions, but most sitcoms rely on a "reset button" that allows a scene to just be funny and quickly forgotten.

It's interesting. I personally recognise Matt Berry's character as a sexist pig cartoon almost, and am able to laugh at him. This could be age related, me having seen some really obnoxious stuff on primetime tv in the 70s, which I would hasten to say I never really found funny. What I think it is is that I was never aware of any scandal involving Graham Linehan and it has been fairly obvious that this has loomed large for you and been at the back of your mind all the time. I've had a check after hearing you mention it and I see he has been banned from twitter for homophobic or transphobic comments or both. I recognise Reynolm's sexism - it would be impossible to miss - but being unaware of the background, have never made particular note of any homophobia. I could go back looking for it but frankly, that way lies madness.
The long and the short of it is that I'm sorry you weren't able to fully immerse n this, and that you survive Matt Berry in 'What We Do In The Shadows' if you ever get to it.

British comedy is very different from US comedy in that with characters like Douglas we laugh at how ridiculous his comments are rather than what he is saying. It goes a long way back UK in sitcoms.

  • @Ueltomas
    @Ueltomas ปีที่แล้ว

Perhaps the American/UK divide on sitcoms stems from theirs being rooted in real life, for example Friends, Cheers, Roseanne were all somewhat grounded in real people you felt like you could be friends with and decisions had weight and episodes ended with a 'you know what, I really learned something today' kind of moral to them. UK sitcoms were much less grounded, with almost a cartoon style escapism and an exaggerated approach to humour. This may be because for many decades highly educated and eloquent individuals were given the opportunity to be very, very silly, especially by the BBC.

I'm honestly pretty mixed on The IT Crowd. It has some really brilliant moments, but it also does some stuff that I don't at all care for. And while Moss, Roy and Jen are all great, I don't find Richmond all that funny, and Douglas is downright unbearable much of the time. At times, I've said that The IT Crowd is really funny, and at others, that it's really not my cup of tea, and it took me a while to realize that those viewpoints don't represent an evolution of my opinion, but rather a more consistent evaluation of different facets of the show.

Genuinely, I love the IT crowd for launching O’Dowd and Ayoade (at least as far as my awareness of them is concerned) and for a few great classic scenes. But it’s also got a lot of guff in it. It’s quite a patchy show. A lot of pretty bland low budget, weakly written filler that just happens to have some classic moments scattered in there.
That’s not uncommon for British TV. A lot of shows that just have that 1 episode and one or two other iconic scenes that almost have a life of their own outside the original show for being so iconic, but otherwise it’s a fairly generic show

    • @stuffyouotterlistento1461

And my issue with Douglas isn't even that I find him problematic, but rather one-dimensional and obnoxious. He's a one-joke character, and that joke wasn't even funny in the first place, much less after it'd been beaten into the ground over and over again.

  • @AlfeyHolmes

I think this show is a great example for the phrase "shooting oneself in the foot". It could be one of the greatest, but it constantly sabotages itself. Douglas has no qualities other than being a sleaze. IMO, they should either show him meeting the consequences of his actions, or he shouldn't exist at all. Sadly, The IT Crowd was my first "interaction" with Matt Berry, and it ruined this otherwise cool actor for me. Whenever I see him in some other shows, all I can see is Douglas.
