I am going through the hardest season of my life, an intense and prolonged time of barrenness of soul, sadness, heaviness of heart and sense of God being far off, with feeble prayers the best I can barely audibly mutter. Life is crushing me. Marriage, my health, my wife's health, finances, increasing debt, uncertain job situation, unsaved adult children, living apart from my wife and many, many more storms converging at the same time. I have wondered if I can hold on, if I will make shipwreck of my soul, if the Lord has already left me. These ruminations only compound my grief. I never heard of this hymn before today. Playing SGM songs this morning, this was next in the que. I am glad this came to me now because these lyrics speak to me. Perhaps it is this season of suffering that is preparing me for growth I cannot even imagine while in this darkness of soul.

Came to this song for the same reason. Being through a very hard time, mixed with fear and guilt and doubt. I lost my hope cause I did not see any way I could escape from this pit. But as you said, it is a season, which He could use to let us bear more fruit. Consider Peter in the Gospel. Most of his records are either self-rebuking when he was on the boat, or being rebuked by Jesus, and later being crushed by the difficulties, and then being rebuked by Paul. Yet Jesus said encouraging words to him, rather than giving him a perfect Christian life to boast about. Jesus loves Peter for sure. Jesus also asked Peter to strengthen his brothers when he become strong in faith again. I felt that John Newton must have been through some great inner trails also. And now our God uses these to strengthen us. It is in this way we could know why He is our only hope.
I wonder too, how are you all doing? This hymn, your stories, and my own suffering reminds me of Job 7:17-18 - “What is man that You magnify him, And that You are concerned about him, That You examine him every morning And try him every moment?" This question is again echoed in Pslams 8, 144 and in Hebrews 2. I urge you to read those passages. Stay strong in the LORD for you may not yet see how He is preparing you and for what. Romans 8:28 - "And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose." NASB
I just wany to share this to encourage you all, because my heart yearns for you. I am already in a wheelchair, but over the last 3 years, have developed hemiplegic attacks, I totally shut down, can't move, talk or open my eyes. But on one occasion, in a&e, The Lord showed me 'my control room' figuratively. I was on the floor, powerless. But by my side, I could see His feet and the hem of His robe. Completely cut off & isolated. He was there in my deepest place. He is there. Don't give up, and since then , although I am still degenerating slowly, still have these attacks, He has taken my spiritual life to a place I never hoped for. He won't let your pain be wasted .

I’ve been in the pit of anxiety, ocd, depression, wanting it all to end, not wanting to go on, not seeing how I can keep going like this for 6-7 months after coming off antidepressant that was keeping my mental health stable How long, o Lord? Pray for me please. I’m in intensive therapy and working on getting on a new medication. Please pray it will help me. Please pray my faith will be strengthened. I feel so frail in faith and even have angry, bitter feelings towards God that He is allowing this and not coming through for me yet.
I can't imagine how difficult all those things at once must be. I am praying that the bitterness and anger you described subsides and turns into peace that surpasses all understanding. How have you been doing this last month?

My beloved brothers and sisters. Oh how my soul hurts as it has been assaulted these past weeks. The enemy pummels me with accusations and even from the word to keep me away it seems until it becomes so much that I can hardly eat or do anything as drains my body and just cry out to Christ to take me home. I have no hope in this world, it has nothing I could possibly want or need. Coming across this song just assures me that I'm not alone. Amen

The closer my walk with my Savior, the more I recognize my many flaws and how unworthy I am of His grace and mercy; it makes me to cling to Him more as I see no other recourse for rescue but by His power! And for this, I thank Him and cannot wait to shed my earthly self and rise in His perfect will and love-in due time…
I am going through a time of confusion and trials in my life. This song reminds me that the Lord will use it all for good. I'm also reminded that part of Joseph's journey with God was being thrown into a pit and sold to foreigners, which must have been so confusing. But God worked all of it out for good in the end (Gen. 50:20). I'm encouraged that we can come to know God more through these inward trials, even though they are so unpleasant.
And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. I felt this same hesitancy. I know what you mean. But then I realized a "bad" day with the Lord near is way better than a "good" day without Him. I'm sure Newton had no regrets about praying this prayer, as he says "Twas He who taught me thus to pray and He I trust has answered prayer".
