Life has jaded me, but this song is so authentic and heartfelt. It's a much needed ray of hope to a cruel world.
I studied to be an opera singer and became one. My mom asked why I loved Amy Grant's music so much given that she isn't in the same league as as some opera diva and told her to listen to her to the honesty and purity of her voice. There's no vocal gymnastics just a simple voice. I think her voice is perfect this song. It perfectly captures Mary's feelings of not being worthy, gratitude and fear and courage.

Some of us may at times feel nervous to share our faith with others, this song puts a new perspective on sharing faith. Though Mary may not have been nervous to share her faith, she needed faith that God would be with her to continue to carry on despite that others may doubt her, and some would, but more so, she was a virgin soon to be married in a time when those who have been accused to have committed adultery or to have lost virginity before marriage could possibly lose their life & be stoned to death.
We all need the faith Mary had when we find ourselves in a situation where we may be the only chance for someone to learn the truth about God's Glorious Kingdom and everlasting life.

I Love this song; but, in 2 different ways. One is ALL About the Baby Jesus, and Mary, & how incredibly difficult it must have been for her to be carrying what her world would have considered to be an "illegitimate child"... But God . . . spoke to Joseph in a dream, & told him that it was "Perfectly Okay" for him to take Mary as his wife; & that the Holy Spirit caused Mary to conceive the baby she was carrying...
Secondly, this song has proven itself to be a song that uplifts me (and others) in our own "Times of Need", for decades, now . . . I recall sending a cassette tape of it to my Aunt Doris and Uncle Lee, after he had had a terrible stroke & his words were Not coming out of his mouth correctly (and yet, his brain knew what he meant to say to people) . . . It was incredibly sad for him and his family! But, I think the song brought them a bit of Joyfulness, especially because it is ALL About our Lord Jesus!

The only person I've ever seen in concert ever and this was in the 90's.
This song gives us a glimpse into Mary's heart and the emotions she was dealing with. Just a young teenager, asked to be a woman. Her strength came through prayer to the Father. Almighty God never let go of her.
"A young teenager": most ladies in the 1st century BC married before or on their 14th birthday so she wasn't anything unusual in that regard...
(this practice continued well into the industrial revolution in the 1830s. it's only in more recent times that we deny that teenagers are mature/maturing... and even there it's often a double standard... at 16 you're mature enough to drive a car, but you can't vote or get married until you're 18, and you can't drink alcohol until you're 21)
So a hundred centuries of developing to adulthood in the early teens followed by less than 2 centuries of "Nope, not an adult until you're 21." Is it any wonder teens get confused by the mixed signals their getting?

Remeber this song as a kid/teens. My mother would play on repeat around christmas time. At the time i didnt appreciate it. She passd last week. Appreciate the song now and its meaning.
This song came to me the first year that I had to spend without my newborn son. I remember the burden I had to bear. I felt like I was alone in doing so, but He reminded me that I am never alone.
Music heals. I am unable to have kids, and once had an errand to the Babies r Us store. I was divorced, infertile and buying gifts for my Grand niece. I stayed so focused but had to go to the back corner of the store to get the item. on the way back I took a short cut, but ended up in the furniture section. and Spotlight boom. there was the set up I would want - heck even if i were pregnant I'd never have the cash or credit to afford it - but my heart... it was all i could do to stand in line behind two people, pay for my item and duck into my car. Thank Heaven for music. Laura Story's song on the radio and the pain and anguish of never having my own... of the family line stopping with me... all of that...I was able to hand it over to Jesus to hold... the waves... they would have drown me then and there without the lifeline of the music to keep my head up and show me how to breath again. Just inhale one more heartbeat, inhale again... God is good. oh so good and we are not adrift, alone on the restless sea, we are always in the middle of his strong and tender hands. HUGS.
