Indie developers out there: please create an NPC in your game called Todd Todgers who challenges you to a minigame but consitently (and unrealistically) beats you after you initially win
That's a great idea. To ideate upon it though, it should be part of a mandatory quest or something in the "pirated" release, yet completely optional in the official release. Similar to what Greenheart Games did for their release of Game Dev Tycoon... Just a thought.
The Homestar Runner guys already did that. If you get a score >50,000 in their easter egg game "Nighttime Driving" it shows Strong Bad holding up a picture of his TV with the score [Your Score +1]. Which is obviously fake because Nighttime Driving only scores in increments of 100
What's funny about his explanation for his Dragster record is that if you break it down, he's actually describing how to shift a real drag car, he isn't describing anything you can actually do in the game.
That is what I always found hilarious. He tried to con everyone into believing the programming was that sophisticated. You can’t rev up the RPMs and pop the clutch. Haha! That’s when people should’ve called bullshit IMMEDIATELY
Yeah I always wondered why nobody mentions this. His explanation has no bearing on the game or anything that you can do with the incredibly basic 2600 controller that has a whopping 1 button and joystick lol.
I'm a huge auto racing aficionado, circuit and drag in real life and in simulators, and I was immediately suspicious of his claim the very first time I heard it lmao. But you don't have to be a hardcore fan to know that it makes absolutely no sense, especially in regards to the hardware and software available at the time he supposedly broke the record. A lot of modern racing games don't even have that feature lmao.
Going though Todd's early history might be entertaining, but you really don't need Dragster to prove he's a cheat. Even the Barnstorming story, while it shows how he was able to cheat, is nothing compared to his other scores. I mean just line them up and ask yourself how ANY of these EVER could have made it into any leaderboard: Centipede (Atari 5200). Legitimate world record: 112,674. Todd Rogers: 65,000,000 on the dot. Donkey Kong Junior (Atari 2600). Legitimate World Record: 1,723,700. Todd Rogers: 15,000,000 on the dot. Wabbit (Atari 2600). Game physically cannot have a score that ends in an 8 or is higher than 1,500. Todd Rogers: 1,698. He should have been tossed out immediately after entering any of these. No leaderboard in the modern times would accept anything like this on its face. People say Billy Mitchel is the biggest cheat, but Mitch stuck to scores that look plausible. Todd would just pull numbers out of his ass
Billy Mitchel cheated on, the King of Kong, but he can actually replicate most of his scores. He posted recent videos reaching +1m in Donkey Kong and getting a perfect Pac-Man score now that he's older. I have yet to see a Todd Rogers video of him doing any world record or at least close to it in case he uses the excuse, "now I'm old"; which I won't believe since Billy can still do it and is from the same generation
@@Pokarface7it took Billy like a year of play to reach a million in Donkey Kong and his "live" play is a very different style than his recorded play (in recorded runs he is noted for being a very risky player, going for points that most top runners wouldn't because they risked ending what is a very long run - in live play, he plays conservatively like an older Donkey Kong player would). This is why Robert, the Twin Galaxies ref, believes that Billy had other people play for his recorded runs or used an insane amount of save states. He started suggesting this in the early 2000s, way before it was exposed as MAME play. He's the same guy you see in King of Kong who argues against Billy's video tape being included on the leader board because of irregularities he notices and Walter Day overrules him.
Rogers is such a weird case because, in all honesty, back when he was bullshitting about this stuff no one really cared. Yeah he had a Guinness record but it had NO real prestige, it was like having the record for most bowling balls balanced on your head. There was no huge speedrunning scene, it wasn't like there were GDQ events and Twitch streamers getting millions of follows. He was just kind of a guy who could tell people at a bar that he had a world record and that was it. By the time gaming and speedrunning were blowing up into big, legitimate sport, Todd was WAY too deep in to just go "oh yeah I've been lying for 30 years." He wouldn't have even been ABLE to lie like that if it weren't for how tiny and unimportant his "records" were at the time he set them.
@@DevaPein It was a fierce competition, yes, but it was among a group of people who could all comfortably fit in a city bus, give or take a row of seats. The average person either wouldn't care or would just go "huh neat" without any knowledge of the mechanics behind it and give Todd a momentary attention-boner, whereas nowadays anyone who knows anything about speedrunning would recognize his bullshit for what it is, which I'm pretty sure was Zach's point. He's a known quantity now, and just digs himself deeper and deeper in a way that wasn't possible back in the day.
@@RemoWilliams1227 I mean when I was at school, anybody could say they had completed any game, and all you had was their word for it, whereas now with achievements/trophies, you usually get one for finishing the main campaign, which works as a sort of proof. I mean most games back then were on cartridges that DIDN'T have batteries to save your progress. Which is why passwords/cheat codes were a thing.
He was able to lie for so long because of the old Twin Galaxies and the people who ran it. Todd Rogers wasn't just a cheat. He was also a referee validating his friends scores for Twin Galaxies. People questioned his scores going way, way back. But it never went anywhere because Twin Galaxies refused to investigate and it was difficult to come up with absolute proof. Then (a) Twin Galaxies got new ownership and (b) the detailed research proved his dragster score was fake.
This is one of those topics that gets covered to death, but never gets old. Good ol' Todd Togers and Billy Bitchel should be featured every week somewhere on TH-cam.
Haha does Billy Mitchell best him !?? He's still claiming perfect games and he's the King of Kong... He sues everyone who says hes a cheater and never won a case and only digs himself deeper.... There is an Aussie getting sued by Mitchell on a new video today... KARL JOBST channel check it out and today he has Billy Mitchell's latest scam

@@Kerbalista Yeah if you’re going to cheat, at least put some damn effort into it. Todd’s cheated high scores were all so outrageous that anybody could easily disprove it with minimal effort and time. Makes me question Todd’s intelligence or maybe he just half-assed his cheating like his dress attire. Like his insane 65000000 score at Centepede… he claimed in his interview with Tipster he knew it was fake and that Ron Corceron input that score…. But then went right ahead and personally added it to his own personal blog at the time: beatthechamp
Todd Rogers is such a baffling man. People compare him to Billy Mitchell, fellow video game cheater who hasn't accomplished anything for the better part of four decades and is notoriously litigious. But like, Mitchell's records were in games folks gave a shit about? Stuff like Donkey Kong and Pac-Man, games people have actually heard of. Who in the hell has heard of Dragster, or really anything Rogers "held" a record in, who didn't hear of them through this scandal? It's like claiming you're the Greatest 5'7'' Electrician from Nova Scotia; it's not a record anyone would give a rat's ass about. Add onto that the fact that Mitchell is *known* to actually be, y'know, *good* at the games he played? You can't really take his "First to hit Pac-Man's kill screen" distinction from him, or his early Donkey Kong records. Near as anybody can tell, he did those legitimately. He probably *could've* taken the records back on his own, he just fuckin' lied about it because he wanted the prestige (and marketing buzz for his businesses) of being the "Donkey Kong" guy without having to put in the effort or settle for putting "Historic" in that title. Todd Rogers is just some old fart who might've been good at a couple obscure games 40 years ago who blatantly lied about being good at *dozens* of obscure games from 40 years ago. He was never the early gamer god he claimed to be, and yet he tied his ego to these records that people by and large don't care about, insofar as he felt the need to bullshit up new records just to stay on "top" of categories that nobody cared about. It's a special kind of pathetic, really. EDIT: Spelling
@@wtonhe certainly plays games, but he's still a cheater who continually lies about things like his awards and his record that was most definitely not on real hardware
My favorite part of Todd Rodgers (and to a lesser extent Billy Mitchell) is that they just look so decomposed. They're barely hanging on to relevancy with this antiquated achievement that is rapidly becoming less attractive as people learn more about video games, and somehow can't manage to make it look on cam like they didn't just wake up sleeping on their living room futon.
The Dragster 'record' is what first convinced me beyond a doubt that he's a cheat. There's a strong mathematical proof through machine code analysis that there is no execution path through any combination of possible controller inputs that can result in the time he 'achieved', without a stray gamma ray flipping SEVERAL random bits in the 2600's RAM/registers or the cartridge ROM. The chances of this happening are astronomical. The chances of this happening the same way, multiple times, to the same person in the over the course of a decade is... ...Well... ...We're talking on the magnitude of 10 to the power of the number of leptons in the entire universe (don't check me on that, just accept it's incomprehensibly unlikely).
@@stuffbenlikes In same way that there's a chance of Russell's Teapot existing, yes, technically. Basically the argument is 'You can't prove it didn't happen'.
Everyone focuses on the Dragster story because that's what got Guinness involved. But if you ever took one look at his other records it would have been blindingly obvious from the start. The legitimate world record for Centipede is 58,078... and Todd Rogers told a referee to put his score at 65,000,000 (on the dot) and somehow he got away with it for years
You did really well on this! I watched it with my mom earlier (who knows nothing about any of this sort of stuff), and she really enjoyed it as well! Keep it up!
It's funny to me how the 2 biggest cheaters in video game history (todd rogers and billy mitchell) are both some of the oldest people to "hold" video game world records
Imagine being such a sigma that you do a TAS to prove 5.57 is the limit, and then go out of your way to be the first person ever to pull off a 5.57 with video proof
And with 5.64 being the only score that Todd can actually prove having achieved, this makes it very likely that Omni and Darbian are the first to achieve the _actual_ best time in Dragster. That's gotta sting.
At 18:08, I (Ryan Genno) remember posting that Legendary Axe error on Twin Galaxies during the original dispute. It was just after I done a complete playthrough of the entire game yet my score was well below Todd's there.
While I obviously can't prove it, imagine he did at first, but he's probably a narcissist and couldn't stand the idea of other people being recognized as better then him, so he started faking times.
No probably not, maybe like once or twice way back in the 80s or whatever he got a hi score record in a local arcade and it was then he realized he loved the taste of being above everyone else and just so he could get that feeling again cheated all these bonkers scores.
Actually, Activision is not a game developing company. They never HAVE been. Many people get this twisted up. They are ONLY a DISTRIBUTOR, of games. They take games others have developed & get them out into the world. That’s it. Their problem is…they’re terrible, at choosing the right games to DO so. Lol!
11:13 I believe Todd only entered his record once. Once a day! 15:28 Ben didn't get the 5.57 with Todd's instruction, but, got the 5.57 using Omni's spreadsheet. Ben got more "Blowns" than time using Todd's instruction.
Screw Todd Rogers with his 5.51 time in Dragster...I got a 0.01 time in that same game! All you have to do is wait for the game to start...then, IMMEDIATELY activiate your Warp Drive in Warp 2. Just don't start with Warp 1, or the best time you will get is a 0.02...and, Warp 3 will cause the game to crash. The best part was when Activision found out about how I got such a low time in Dragster...not only did they send me a poorly editted certificate which may or may not be just a napkin with a poop stain on it, which I found in some homeless guy's butt-crack...but, that "certificate" said I was the greatest video game player in the History of the entire Universe for all time past, present, AND future.
The hilarious and sad thing would be that both would KNOW that everything they are is a total lie, but would probably kiss each others asses relentlessly! 😂 'oh wow Todd, that Dragster championship...really great... Now when I won my special championship for Donkey Kong and world record and when I was awarded a trophy by Namco, everyone was saying how great I was blah blah blah blah'' '' oh thats great Billy, well I was given all this praise by Activision and then I won the Guiness World record and then I was getting crowds at conventions and everyone said how inspirational and legendary I am and how I am so special and I am the best gamer ever and I leave people baffled because I am so great'' It would be two of the most self centered, egotistical and narcissistic liars trying to one up each other.

My last name is actually pronounced the same way you would say "tomorrow" (only without the "to"). Anyway, I later heard Todd told a BUNCH of whoppers about me on another steamer's channel, going so far as to claim I tried to 'take over TG and make it my own brand'. Robert M and I both laughed about that one, as I only ever wanted the TG database to be clean of these fraudulent scores. Also of note: We as TG referees never got paid a dime, despite it being effectively a full-time job. Several refs, including myself, would eventually get burned out and quit. All of the money was going to Walter, and guess who else? BM. That's right, BM actually owned a stake in TG, which is why Walter always did whatever BM said or wanted, and fully supported him during his own time in the hot seat for cheating. The truth be told, my brother and I would have never joined up with such a corrupt organization. I assumed everything was on the level because they required the rest of us to ALWAYS have full video proof. I did not know people like Todd and Billy were allowed to have records with zero actual proof, and when I found out, it pissed me off something fierce. Of course the tactic BM and Todd are doing now is to drag lawsuits out for years, trying to cause people to either forget or end up dying. Case in point is BM's lawsuit against the DK forums, which he eventually dropped because the owner passed away and the forums are now offline. Just disgusting.
By the way, Todd claimed the reason the other two people that got 5-51 on Dragster were 'removed' from the records was due to a phone call from Activision, where they could not explain how they got 5-51, and Todd explained he started out in 2nd gear, which Activision bought and accepted as a good explanation. Now the interesting part about that BS is it was later proven to be impossible to start out in 2nd gear, and Todd now claims he never started out in 2nd gear, but was just so fast it 'looked like he did'. So every time a lie is exposed, he just reworks the lie to cover it.
Wow, awesome to see you stumble upon this video. Apologies about the mispronunciation, completely glossed over that. I appreciate all your contributions to the scene and being very transparent about these frauds.
Twin Galaxies moron referees still haven't explained why they covered up....er ....I mean....."overlooked" the original King of Kong, Tim Sczerbys Donkey Kong world record set on August 16 of 2000 when the subject matter became of marketable interest. This was a case of a proven legitimate world record performance intentionally covered up by the corrupt, bungling idiot referees at Twin Galaxies so pay-to play faker Steve Webie ( who bought his way in thanks to his connections with the film makers) and that other cheating sack of shit Billy Mitchell could deceptively disenfranchise a legitimate player and then market a fraudulent documentary as fact for profit. Yes this is a crime no matter if one thinks the end result is entertaining or not. You just know this will come up in court if Bily vs. Twin Galaxies goes to trial. 😄 Walter Day should be wearing horizontal stripes instead of vertical ones. Initially it was stated Tims score was "Constantly Disputed and "Impossible to verify" as justification for the exclusion. The film makers stated they had Twin Galaxies assistance to locate Tim but could not find him, odd Billy and Walter found him the day the film opened though.😄 Fucking scammers! Billy, Walter, and all the corrupt referees at that worthless scoreboard. The Marrow bros. were probably the most worthless of them all.😄 Idiot Twin Galaxies referees sure had egg on their face when a copy of Tims unjustly defamed performance turned up. More cover their ass excuses were fabricated after. Twin Galaxies couldn't have looked more corrupt and stupid at this point. Old Twin Galaxies was an absolutely worthless rag and a disgrace to score keeping archives everywhere. BTW Steve Webie , the original King of Con, only got in because of the connections to the film people who bribed Billy and Walter to re-write history and whore out the score board. Steve was also NOT playing on an original 1981 DK PCB (lost video stupidly provided by the Marrow Bros.100% proves this statement) Thanks to those bungling imbeciles, the Marrow Bros. and their "discovery", they only proved Steve was NOT playing on an original 1981 DK PCB as required for years and further confirmed Tim was still the first to beat Billys 1982 arcade WR NOT Steve. Par for the course for the buffoonish oafs at Twin Galaxie s and their worthless score keeping.😄 Old Twin Galaxies "Official" score board...... what a selectively enforced mother fucking joke that was! Twin Galaxies was as crooked as a dogs hind leg. It's pretty bad and shameful when old Twin Galaxies will promote liars and fakers like Todd Togers and Billy Mitchell with NO proof but yet cover up legitimate performances so their insider pals can unjustly re-write the historical content they claimed to preserve and market it as their own. for profit.🤨

I am very interested in the psychology behind why people do this. Especially with how Todd Rogers doubled down with defamation lawsuits after being outed as a fraud. This is someone that got some minor "fame" because of casual journalism of the 80s where they didn't fact check and took a lot of things at face value. Then Activision basically used him as a marketing tool. Todd based his entire personality off of this one event, despite it doing very little to actually bring him success. Other than fueling his narcissism, ALL OF THIS amounted to nothing for Todd Rogers. I'm an early 90s kid, so I compare this to kids telling false secrets in Mortal Kombat on the school playground....but never growing out of that 40+ years later. I am willing to bet that Todd Rogers has a close friend, girlfriend, or family member that believes everything he says, and actually encourages him to fight this. Unless the narcissism is really that bad, there has to be somebody in his day-to-day life that is feeding this lie. Any time I think about what I'd do if I were in the shoes of Todd Rogers, the answer is always give up and disappear from the media.
You know what’s really hilarious..? Twin Galaxies & Guinness BOTH used each OTHER as confirmation “Toger’s” Dragster record was legit & confirmed. Twin Galaxies: Oh yeah! It’s a real record & 100% true! Guinness says so, & that’s all we need. Guinness: Yes, Todd’s 5.51 Dragster time IS the record. Twin Galaxies has accepted it. So, that’s all we need!
I'd barely heard of Todd Rogers until I watched this (probably because my interest in speedrunning/competitive gaming is a fairly new one) which shows there's still merit in producing content about old controversies like this, as I won't be the only person who's learning about it for the first time
Regarding Barnstorming, if it weren't coming from a proven lair I'd be inclined to accept that someone might trigger the glitch and not notice the number decreasing twice (unless there's also audio feedback, the video muted the game sounds). Weird that someone might fail a barn and keep playing, but it's not impossible.
Todd used to be a customer of ours at this restaurant me and my family worked at in Weeki Wachee, Fl. When I say he would always come up with a reason something was wrong to get it for free, he did. It’s why I remember him so well. He’s truly just a scamming pathological liar in everything he does.
I've always had a theory about Todd's photographic evidence. The Atari 400/800 video circuits are similar to the 2600 and it would be pretty easy to create any screenshot you wanted if you were willing to take the time to draw it in a painting program.
I used to go to Todd's house, I was younger. my brother knew him and his brother scott. I remember todd would put dragster in and showing us. I remember it was insanely fast. I dont remember much. I do remember when we went to the arcade, he was so cocky and play gorf and play it for HOURS on a quarter.
Yes! What a great way to start my weekend after shit week. Keep up the great work and effort! Great nail color (and keyboard & mouse, same one my wife uses) btw.
Milly Bitchell had a great career, but no one cares for Rodd Togers, he only got scores in games no one cares, unless he used his talent to get scores in games people care.
I still think Billy Mitchell is worse because that guy is insane and literally lies about everything. Todd Todgers is terrible too but I'm not sure he's as bad. Billy lies about stuff he has no reason to lie about
19:49 Guinness restored the high scores that Mitchell set in live events in front of an audience because it was the right thing to do. Not because they "rolled over" or were "scared". The disputed scores set in MAME were not reinstated.
He is one of the oldest professional gamers. However he is also one of the oldest professional gaming cheats. Along with Billy Mitchell. It would be a hard choice, who is the bigger liar? Todd or Billy?
Todd wins if you go by amount of cheating he’s done, but Billy wins when you factor in that he made way more off of his cheating than Todd ever did. I knew who Billy Mitchell was as a kid.
Even when some of Todd Roger's records were surpassed, proving that they were actually possible, it's still suspicious that he actually managed to get those records way back in the 1980s when there was no internet, there wasn't a community of players sharing hints and strategies, there was no TH-cam to see footage on how to play those games, and it's also suspicious that it took so long for the metagame on these games to improve until he could be beaten, the only excuse that I can give to be his devil's attorney is that most of his records are from games no one cared, not even back then, and people only decided to play those games to beat him.
Apart from the other ridiculous high records, could the Dragster fake record have been an Activision move to increase the game sales? I would say there is a possibility, if not discaarded yet. Btw, how he claimed those records? Only his word vs the world?

Excellent explanation
@@RemoWilliams1227 I mean when I was at school, anybody could say they had completed any game, and all you had was their word for it, whereas now with achievements/trophies, you usually get one for finishing the main campaign, which works as a sort of proof.

Todd Rogers has the record for most records removed... Amazing!
that is the only one that wont get removed

It's funny to me how the 2 biggest cheaters in video game history (todd rogers and billy mitchell) are both some of the oldest people to "hold" video game world records
Boomers that never kept up with games, that were never even very good at those games.
So the longer someone does something the older they get and history builds around it.
So it's in no way surprising.
Todd can tell more lies in a sentence than there are words in that sentence
Imagine being such a sigma that you do a TAS to prove 5.57 is the limit, and then go out of your way to be the first person ever to pull off a 5.57 with video proof
The kind of sigma who spends weeks or months in the same living room, alone, eating pizza, jerking off, and playing the same 40-year old game.

Old Twin Galaxies was an absolutely worthless rag and a disgrace to score keeping archives everywhere. BTW Steve Webie , the original King of Con, only got in because of the connections to the film people who bribed Billy and Walter to re-write history and whore out the score board.
