- Here you will learn how to replace the tail gate door latch/door lock actuator.
tools that you will need are philips screw driver, T20 torque socket, ratchet and extension (optional).

pulled the panel today for my grandmas escape with same problem, ordered her just the solenoid part for 25 as that isnt working. gonna replace this weekend, thanks for this vid
Thank You Man!!! I’m not very vehicle knowledgeable outside of jumping a car and changing tires. But just like many stories in this comment section i got pulled over The officer was cool just let Me onow the light was out but the only way to access it was through the lift gate. I had the bulbs on Me but it’s been stuck for years. I got a warning a shop wanted to charge a whole lot almost two hundred. But Your Video saved Me that expense. I just popped it open with my hand, asked an officer for a Philips screw driver replaced the bulb! All’s good now! Thank You For The guidance! God Bless You Man!

Good Video. 25T is the correct wrench. My latch was replaced 5 or so years ago on recall. They used lock tight on 2 of the 3 25T screws which caused a mess. Had to drill out 1 screw. Thanks for the video!

Great video! Took all of 30 minutes to remove & replace. Price of the part from the Ford dealer $140.00 (didn't want to wait) was the only negative.

My liftgate went out last summer and I have not had the money to take it to a shop that is gooing to charge me a couple hundred in just service fees not to mention the parts and time. My father taught me how to do alot of my own car repair but it was on cars from the 80's and back this helps so much and now I know I can do the repair myself for under 50 dollars. Thank you so much.

I had the same problem, my tailgate would not open. I tried everything. Then for some reason I saw the button on the drivers door that makes it so the passengers can't open their door, for kids. I tried switching that button and went to the back, and I couldn't believe it, it opened right up. I'd try this first before tearing it apart.
Great video. Thank you for this! Our lift gate actuator was working sporadically. When I went to repair I got lucky and the door opened. I was able to bypass the difficult part of your instruction and install the new actuator in less than 15 minutes.

We should see more video and we need more kind online mechanic like him. These days more garage are not honest anymore. Car are essential for us for daily survival job. but they cheating us, they are not honest anymore. but sometime we don't have choice but pay them. You were a life saver with this video.
Thank you so much for this! I’m sure this saved me hundreds of dollars taking it to get fixed. Only cost $20 for the part from Amazon and it took me about ten minutes to fix it. Getting the panel off and putting it back on was the only part that was a pain. I also had to use a T25 too. The T20 was too small. Strange considering mine is a 2012 Escape as well.

Great video, helped me fix my daughter-in-law's Escape right away. Btw, the T20 Torx was too small for my application. I had to use a T25 Torx. Maybe they changed the size of the screw head over time.

Thanks so much. I was baffled about how to get the cover off, but you showed me how. A flashlight helped to see the release catch and get the liftgate open. O'Reillys had the Actuator in stock ($133.00) so I was able to put it on today. Now my wife is happy to have a working liftgate, but I am a little bummed out after reading some comments below and finding that Amazon sells the actuator for under $30. Thanks again!

Great video. I just got done replacing the actuator. For some reason, I had to use a T27 instead of a T20. The screws were really tight, and it took me a while to get them out. Everything else went great.
I am in Georgia. Can I throw the old part into the garbage, or do I have to take it to be recycled?

Someone stole my license plate off my escape & I lock screws on & took the panel off to make the screws tight so no one would take this new plate. I had gotten to put the wire connectors back for the hatch...lol thank you a lot... I left a like & subscribe

If neither the glass or the back hatch will open, what are the odds they both screwed up at the same time? Is it more likely an electrical problem? Without getting the window open, fixing the bottom latch will be VERY difficult.

Hello, in my 2010 Ford Escape it was the T27. However, so far I can't remove the screws even using a Bosh drill (the kind for screwing/unscrewing). Any tips you can recommend to me so I can finally change the part. Thanks in advance.

Check the relay. Look in the manual and you will see there are two fuses and a relay connected to the lift gate latch. In my case it was the relay in the fuse box under the hood. After I replaced the latch and the switch of course. The two fuses were good.
so with my 2012 escape the latch stopped working but there is no sound or clicking so i think it could be the fuse or relay like you say. do you know the fuse and relay number? i don't have a manual, thnx.
Good information, investing in a flashlight to actually show inside the panel at the start of the video would be great.

My 2009 escape is leaking antifreeze qnd over heating it's not a large leak it's used half gallon of antifreeze in about 5 days. I've changed waterpump thermostat and clamps hoses are good I can't find the leak help me please

I have a 2012 xlt 4x4 a/c fully charged but I get intermittent cold then hot operation when the ambient temperature is above 75* any solutions?

@@gqautodiagnostics I did an extra test just to make sure it was the actuator.I disconnected the clip that brings power to the actuator. I put my volt meter on DCV . placed leads in the connector and pressed the button to open the tailgate and my reading spiked to 12v. I knew there and then my actuator was faulty and eliminated the button being defective. I did this because I was getting absolutetly no noise from pressing the button to unlock.

Hello, that is an excellent question, if you are unable to open the gate you need to go into the back of the car an remove the trim or door panel to access the actuator and open the gate and door. Be patient you can do it. Keep me posted and God bless you.

The 3 torx bolts on Escape 2011 were not 20T. They were 25T. Other than that everything went great in following video.

What was the white paste that was on the latch?
That was grease.
Not so easy and simple for me. Just.chanhed out the actuator and relay and fuses theres still no power getting to the actuator any suggestions what could cause this?

I dont kniw what its called but its the rod that the key pushes and it goes into a plastic pc that turns. The rod is slipping in the plastic pc. Try pushing the key in hard when starting the car. Should start rite up.
@@robertmount1379 I found my wife was having that same problem on her 2012 about a year ago and so I started to check it out and found if you pushed in on the key while starting it would work. The same as what you advised @CueBallRacer4319.

Well, before I could get the chance to fix the tail gate latch I sold the vehicle back to the person I bought it from, it had an electrical issue. It was a waste of time and $750 later I can't get my new battery, plates tax, title and registration money back but thank God I didn't have it long enough to purchase the $100 window sticker.
