Don't know why so many viewers have to look for anything wrong or something they would do diffrent.... it's a instructural video, I have never done a toyota break job and the video help me to get it done, thanks. (period)
I replaced my 2000 4Runner pads today and rotors, the brake light come on. Not worried because I put fluid back it and made sure evrything was okay. Does this happen when you change them and lose brake fluid?
I spent the last two days with this gentleman and his instructions are the best I've ever seen for automotive especially for a somewhat complex job like this one. Thank you so much for helping so much and so many!
Ok instead of cracking your bleeder valve to lessen the hydro push, simply open your master cylinder fluid reservoir cap. Also, at 4:30, those aren’t vice grips, those are clamps.
The bleeder will ingest air with this method so keep it close unless bleeding it out to flush. Just grab both pads and squeeze outward one at a tine with a big screw driver then to go further using the old pad on one side, go ahead pull it out and tilt sideways and wedge it on the other-side and use the same method outward and do the other-side and good to go. .
Placing the bottle and hose above the bleeder valve should, in theory, prevent air from returning to the caliper. But it's much easier to just pop the master cylinder cap off.
Do not bleed or remove the caliber!! It just takes a couple minutes working the pistons back using an old brake shoe and a pair of channellocks. Just keep working both sides slowly. Also clean and grease the pins and slide throughly with a wire wheel. If you dont then the caliber can lock up and you will only be grinding away one shoe cause premature failure!
@@bmack7762 By taking off the brake fluid cap you can depress the cylinders with large channel locks and install new brake pads. No bleeding the brakes ,,,, works great just remember to reinstall cap.
Yea I did this on my Impala the other day and have always done that, just pop hood and pop brake fluid cap, sometimes I can use my fingers to compress pistons but sometimes gotta use c clamp
instead of touching the bleeder valve you can open the fill cap on the resevoir achieving the same thing. Just leave a rag on top of the open reservoir so nothing false into it. Air can get sucked back in if you leave the bleeder valve open so I would avoid that method.
Simple job. Just did it on my runner. I did not open the bleeder screw. I didnt want to have to bleed the brakes. I just had a brake fluid flush and fill done before i did this job, so not worried about old fluid creating issues. Popped the cap on the master cylinder and then used my c clamp to compress the pistons. No issues, no overflow.
Great video!!! I just changed my girlfriends brake pads with ease even though it was my first time ever touching a brake pad EVER. Thanks, you saved us some money.
With all the time wasted trying to pry the pistons back by hand, it would have been faster and easier just to take the caliper off in the first place. It's a good idea anyway, I inspect my seals and clean everything with brake parts cleaner. And the pins go back in much easier if you clean them with Scotchbrite or sandpaper. No mention was made of inspecting the rotor. The statement about needing to bleed because of the way you hooked up the drain bottle is correct. Best way is to siphon a bit of fluid out of the reservoir and not touch the bleeders. However, I always like to bleed and flush my fluid every pad/shoe change anyway. You have good video skills, and you are good at explaining steps clearly. I appreciate the effort.
good vid but you could have used a flat screwdriver between the old pads and pushed against the pad and the rotor to force the pitons in its alot easier that way.
My 02’ Limited 2WD 4Runner has 315,000 on it. Not burning oil, no misfire, everything still works. It’s worth the extra cost for the long life and reliability
Great instructions for my wife's front 2000 SR5 brake pads. Ive never done the Toyotas brakes before ( I have 2002 GMC 1500 & 2003) Tahoe ) already installed all brakes last week on GMC. Thank you for this video.
Sorry, your music was hypnotic that I fell asleep, but when the music stop I woke up and sad to say I missed the whole video. Damn it was nice music I have to record it for my sleepless night, who knew a car repair video could have such a piece of fantastic background music that also can be used for medicinal purposes.
Thank you so much for the video! I started to unbolt 4 inner caliper bolts first but stopped when I saw the brake fluid started bleeding between two parts of caliper. Than I went to home, and found your video on You Tube. With your help I did my job very fast.... To push down the pistons I used IRWIN VISE-GRIP Groove-lock Pliers. Also I did't use the bleeders on calipers but just took out the excessive fluid from the brake fluid reservoir by 10ml syringe. Thank you again!
If you take the cap off the brake fluid reservoir, you can compress the pistons and avoid using the bleeder valve and avoid letting air into the system. And don’t shake the fluid.....ever! AND clean the rust off those pins! AND AND make sure you put everything back on place correctly!
This takes so much time. I just push the pistons back with the brake pads. Using a small Prybar. And no. I don’t score the rotor doing this. The old brake pad, yes. Also no need to bleed the brakes. This may not be the right way, but it works and it simple. Can do both sides in 30 mins or less.
Really like this video. I like those Irwin Quick Grips. Replacing my pads today and will be stopping by Lowes to grab a pair"" What size are you using in the video? Thank you again!
I've been told that at high temps the anti seize becomes fluid and could contaminate brake pads. Apparently ceramic grease is not affected by heat so best to use ceramic brake grease.

Great Video. However , i just loosen or remove brake fluid cap to allow fluid to move up the line. If it would happen to overflow? No worries ,add fluid back.
Well done video! Just one suggestion... If you live in an area that spreads salt on the roads during winter. Replace those pins with new ones and apply a light coat of brake lube on them.
Good video and good voice over. You did a good overview of the fiddley Rav4 brake hardware you did omit to show putting that strange spring wire thing through the ends of the rods when final assembly. I have done this job and you covered the specifics to a rav4 which it has an odd design compared with other vehicles. Good mention to Never shake up Brake fluid. Thank you
I don't think you got air in your brake system from shaking the bottle of brake fluid. When you attached a hose to your bleeder, you got air got in that way. Using your method of opening the bleeder (which is unecessary, by the way), you allowed air into the system and needed to bleed the air out because of it. Also, it could have been a good idea to lubricate the pins as well. Good concise video though. Thanks for the effort.
I stuck a napkin (I had leftover yesterday, when I did front brakes on my 4Runner, from a great Mexican Restaurant I went to for lunch) in the open reservoir to prevent any overfill from the backfill when you push open your calipers. that's for sure where the air got introduced into the sytem. Yes, I was wondering the same thing. You got to remove them to do the job, why wouldn't you clean those off? Wire wheel/brush or sand paper.
