- Operation Praying Mantis was a naval battle between the United States and Iran on April 18, 1988, in response to the Iranian mining of the Persian Gulf, which severely damaged the USS Samuel B. Roberts (FFG-58). Despite striking a mine that tore a massive hole in its hull, the Samuel B. Roberts survived due to the extraordinary skill and determination of its crew, who fought to control the flooding and keep the ship afloat.
In retaliation, the U.S. Navy launched a large-scale attack, targeting Iranian oil platforms used for military operations and engaging Iranian warships. The frigate Sahand was sunk, Sabalan was crippled, and Iranian speedboats were neutralized. The operation demonstrated U.S. naval superiority and deterred further Iranian aggression in the region. It remains the largest U.S. naval surface engagement since World War II and a testament to the courage and resilience of the Samuel B. Roberts’ crew.
Lyrics:
The sun rose high on the Persian tide,
A silent war, where shadows hide.
A spark ignites, the call is made,
For those who fight, for those betrayed.
Iranian mines had claimed their prize,
The Roberts cries.
A line was drawn, no room for doubt,
Retaliation, the orders shout.
Fire in the Gulf, the battle calls,
Steel and thunder, the empire falls.
Strike with fury, strike with might,
Turn the tide in a single night.
From the decks of giants, the missiles flew,
Guided by vengeance, swift and true.
Platforms burned, the sea lit bright,
A message sent in crimson light.
The Harpoons roared, the cannons sang,
A warning carved where war drums rang.
The Sabalan turned, her fate was cast,
One final strike, a fireblast.
Fire in the Gulf, the battle calls,
Steel and thunder, the empire falls.
Strike with fury, strike with might,
Turn the tide in a single night.
In waters torn by rage and fire,
The fleet stood strong, the flames climbed higher.
A show of force, a power grand,
To break the will, to take a stand.
When the smoke had cleared, the lesson stayed,
A war half-won, a debt repaid.
But echoes ring where sailors fell,
In waters deep, their stories dwell.
The Gulf remembers, the tide won’t fade,
A warning carved where blood was laid.
For those who serve, for those who stand,
Steel and honor still command.
Fire in the Gulf, the battle calls,
Steel and thunder, the empire falls.
Strike with fury, strike with might,
Turn the tide in a single night.
Through fire and water, the legend flows,
A tale of power, a tale of foes.
In history’s pages, the echoes stay,
The day the fleet took war away.
