The cost of Chinese warships is much lower than that of similar warships in the West because there is no arms dealer to earn the difference from the middle. So there's no need to cram so many weapons into a 5,000 ton boat. We need him to be the best at what he's good at, not the most miscellaneous. Many ships have a COGAG propulsion system such as the RN type 22 or CVS. It is instructive to compare the swift and steady progress of the PLAN with the fiasco of USN procurement with the Zumwalt and LCS disasters.
When they say Combined gas and gas propulsion, what they mean is that the ship has multiple turbines that combine output, to provide endurance/range when one is working, and speed when 2 are powering the same shaft. But i think the 54B is Diesel only, no turbines.
@ Where is the exhaust for the gas turbine? They are huge and should easily be visible. We already have over-head shot of the type 054b, and all I can see are four small exhausts for four diesel engines. Also, there is no need to put gas turbines on the type 054b, because it would greatly increase the cost, and you will just buy the type 052d instead. Type 054b should be a low-cost alternative to type 052d that the Chinese Navy can purchase 20 or 30 of the ships for cheap. The European navies do not have something like the Type 052d, and that is why they build big and expensive frigates. The PLAN should not do this, and just decided between a cheap 054b, or more expensive Type 02d. Finally, if the propulsion of Type 054b is significantly different than Type 054a, then it should be named Type 057 instead. The PLAN tends to switch model number when propulsion changes. For example, Type 076 vs. Type 075. Why is Type 076 not Type 075a? This is because Type 076 use IEP with two gas turbines rated at 21 MW of power each, along with diesel engines with a total power of around 80 MW. This is very different than Type 075, which uses only diesel engines. Hence Type 076 is more appropriate than Type 075a.
