Around 40 years ago I bought a 39 Buick that hadn't run for years from an old farmer that was sure he was screwing me and I was sure I was screwing him. $80 was paid for it. My dad (mostly) and I went through the same process as shown in this vidio. To this day, it runs like a top. GREAT example of how to get an old engine running again!
In 1967, I worked for a summer camp in Boxford Mass. The "truck" we had for dump runs was a 1938 Buick that had the body chopped off behind the drivers seat and a pick-up bed behind it. It was a Straight 8 and would burn rubber all day long! I was 17.
My first car was a 50 Buick. The starter would engage sometimes with the engine already running, I put a push button switch on the dash because of that, It was common then(60s) to boost a 6V car with 12V, just don't have a door open or your foot on the brake. The bulbs wouldn't take 12V.
My uncle had one of these in white, with a modern crate motor swap, and when he recently passed-away, we arranged to have it taken to his gravesite on a trailer and started/revved a bit, because of how much he loved that car.
Buick had the starter switch on the accelerator linkage from the early 30's right up until 1960. My dad drove Buicks off and on for years. My parents brought me home from the hospital in a 1954 Century and had that car right up until 1959.
My dad told me that the starter sometimes was under the clutch pedal for safety.if dad were alive he would be 102 years old He also told me that both Buick and Chevrolet had over head valve engines before almost every one else
That’s why it amazes me Model A’s are so popular. A 31 Chevy had a OHV straight six and a roomier cabin and externally they looked similar. As you went up the GM hierarchy the cars got roomier.
@@ldnwholesale8552Actually ford produced an all aluminium, flat plane crank, dual overhead cam v8 back in 1940 (design started in the 1930s) The GAA v8 engine built for the war effort. I'm not American, I'm surprised how few of you know about this engine.
Allwways a good day when Davin an crew puts up a video, was this one of Hagerty lot cars..the old iron till awaking an breathing again..heck yea.. tks for sharing again
I have a friend who has one of these. He kept it original for many years and then finally made a resto rod out of it. However it still has all of it's original body and interior. It could easily be put back to stock. His is a business coupe with no back seat.
Davin's been doing this long enough to know better than to get worked up over negative comments. Thin skin is for tyros. The vast majority of us are rooting for success, not wishing him failure. Time to get over it. Take a cue from one of the best, Ivan Dunton of Shed Racing. After a lifetime of top level automotive racing mechanics, this 84 year old actively solicits helpful, positive comments from his viewers and ignores the armchair idiots.
Glad to see you back! Hopefully this is a precursor to more videos soon 👍🏻 friendly suggestion: make a tutorial video about setting ignition timing using a timing light and also setting timing using engine vacuum.
I recently bought a 1946 buick special to try to revive and its cool to see the differences between the pre and post war models, because my 46 has the same base engine but some placements of parts are in different spots. Always cool to get another Hagerty video!
First car I learned to drive was my parents 37 Plymouth business coupe. Nothing like manual choke, starter button on the floor, and double clutching first to second when you’re learning to drive.
As a retired Electrical Engineer ... about the 12-Volt battery. Don't use it too long, or you will fry the GPS/Nav system, the heated seats, and the wiper heaters. Other than that. GOOD JOB! Nice to see an old time that can use his hands without gloves again. It's been a minute 🤐
That's a cool coupe. Seeing that straight eight burp fire meant that it had a little more life left 👍😁 I wonder if Davin will be taking on the Imperial next.
Thanx ! Didn't know about the straight 8's. Funny tho, I had seen them in boats, but didn't cross my mind... Kool find, sure would have liked a tour of the beauty. Lol, more please, shop - field - parking lot, basement, doesn't matter !
Definitely should’ve mentioned it was a straight 8 in the title. I honestly would’ve jumped on watching this well before I did if I seen it was a straight 8 since you don’t see people come across them very often. Regardless we’ll done as always , it’s enjoyable and I enjoy learning things as well from watching these videos 👌🏼.
Well 'that' was a fun video. Of coarse it was! Davin was in it. Keeping it real. Will we see more of the Buick and the straight Eight?? Oh, and Davin too?(lol). Time to buck up Hagerty.
Somebody (I can't remember who) back in the early 1960's loaned me a 38-41? Buick sedan w/2 carbs. Was a gas to drive except the shocks were totally shot. Absolutely cannot remember who owned it or why I had it. As was fashionable in those days we cruised both Hollywood Blvd. & Van Nuys Blvd. in it.
When I was 16 in 1996 I had to use my official arm console paintbrush's handle to start my 82 Camaro 305 like the screwdriver in the video when it was cold outside.
Where did you buy an Exide battery? I recently looked them up, and was sorry to see that they went out of business in 2020! One of the better makes of battery, IMO. I installed one in 2017 (800 CCA!) and it never failed once in the 5 years I used it. My parents 1st car was a '37 Buick, 4-door sedan.
Nice to see you back Davin with a new video! That looks a nice part of the world, and the Buick looks great. What is the car in the background please at the end of the video?
Is this going to be a tear down rebuild in the aeqsome still photo magic!? Would love to go for a drive in that thing. That weather sure doesnt look like the weather I just left earlier today in northern michigan!
Absolutely this. This is the very best piece of the haggerty channel. Every car he starts, every redline rebuild, they're all the best. Concentrate on Davin!
12 volts yes. Only thing this time should maybe a 12 v coil. 6 volt wiring much heavier than 12 v. Starter will easily handle 12 v . Later on you will need 12 bulbs generator and voltage regulator. Probably forgot something but you'll figure that out. Also the check valves in the mechanical fuel pump are probably stuck or maybe the diaphragm is bad. Great video.
Yes! Davin and his videos are the best thing on this channel. Keep ‘em coming and get out in the shop, get your work done!
Fully Agree!

I appreciate the Davin vids from Hagerty the most. Thanks, Davin and all for making a great vid.

Those old engines are die hard!! Love that body style. Good to get a video, Davin.

@@ronaldcooper7609 that's kind of a "red neck" solution... 😂😂😂
awesome looking car. My dad a Buick 4 door with a straight 8 and drove it to Michigan from NYC family in tow. Great memories 😢❤
My parents also came to Mich (from Chicago) in a '37 4 door.
Fantastic. Great seeing Davin in action.
Great job Davin, reminds me of my dad with numerous vehicles, and it always felt like a victory when they finally came to life!!!!
As a non mechanical person I really enjoyed this video- made the process of examining the car look (almost) easy!
Davin it’s always a great day when you post one of your great videos. Thanks a bunch.
My uncle had one of these in white, with a modern crate motor swap, and when he recently passed-away, we arranged to have it taken to his gravesite on a trailer and started/revved a bit, because of how much he loved that car.
These and redline rebuilds are the two most important thing Hagerty posts
Buick had the starter switch on the accelerator linkage from the early 30's right up until 1960. My dad drove Buicks off and on for years. My parents brought me home from the hospital in a 1954 Century and had that car right up until 1959.
Nice Buick! I once drive a 1951 Pontiac Catalina, that straight 8 was very nice!
Out of the field and back on the road. I'm glad you guys were able to save that gem.
Bout time we got more Davin
I miss this series so much
Love these vids. I wish you could do more, but we know the is so much work that goes into such high quality craftsmanship! Keep up the good work!
My dad told me that the starter sometimes was under the clutch pedal for safety.if dad were alive he would be 102 years old
He also told me that both Buick and Chevrolet had over head valve engines before almost every one else
He was right! I know you must miss him a lot.
Yeah Henry was still playing with those prehistoric sidevalves until 54

Under the gas pedal through 1960. Packard used gas pedal start (Carter Car Start) 1941-54.

This certainly should qualify for a Redline Rebuild and be seen on the road.
These videos are wonderful. Thank you team.
I like the way a strait-8 sounds. Powerful and busy. Big eight and sewing machine.
That Buick sounds great

I have a 38 Buick. Can’t wait to see how far you go with it. Love the video.
Good to see you back
Beautiful car ! Would love to see more on this one ! Thanks for another , Brother !
I love how the starter switch is connected to the throttle pedal. Excellent idea.
excellent idea at first but they also had issues with the vac port clogging and the starter stayed engaged.
Glad to see you back! Hopefully this is a precursor to more videos soon 👍🏻 friendly suggestion: make a tutorial video about setting ignition timing using a timing light and also setting timing using engine vacuum.
I love the “Will it Run?” Videos, Davin, but I’m really jonesing for some Red Line Rebuilds!
I recently bought a 1946 buick special to try to revive and its cool to see the differences between the pre and post war models, because my 46 has the same base engine but some placements of parts are in different spots. Always cool to get another Hagerty video!
Thanks for the squirts joke Davin. And thanks to everyone and you for the video. Loved it.
Hot Damn!! Nobody it does like Hagerty.
11:15 - 10 year old me “dad, what the heck are you doing!”
Dad: (garbled) I’m softening up the hose!
Leaves and spiderwebs, fuel spilled everywhere, the carb backfires, it TOTALLY is not a fire hazard - just a normal day for Devin. 😂😁🤘
You dont know hoy i enjoy these videos 😊😮 …since you make start until you finish the rebuild and then go for the next proyect…!!
First car I learned to drive was my parents 37 Plymouth business coupe. Nothing like manual choke, starter button on the floor, and double clutching first to second when you’re learning to drive.
Makes me want an old straight 8 now...
As a retired Electrical Engineer ... about the 12-Volt battery.

Gorgeous car
Vice grip would love that old Buick
Great car! Look forward to more.
Great start of the straight 8 you do a great job on will it run. 💯👍💕
That's a cool coupe. Seeing that straight eight burp fire meant that it had a little more life left 👍😁
I wonder if Davin will be taking on the Imperial next.
Just recently acquired a 47' Buick 2 door with the straight 8..im staring at it more than im working on it 😂
Cool, my first car was a 1937 Buick Series 40 4 door sedan. It was only 30 years old at the time.
Glad to see you're back!! Been too long.
My neighbor has one! Love the looks on these.
My Grandpa’s 1956 Roadmasrer had the gas peddle start too!
God I wish I had that car today!!
I would have had to tag each spark plug wire 1 thru 6 before taking them off. Great video!
he did mark then 1-8. If you look close you can see sharpie marker on a few of the boots.
Thanx ! Didn't know about the straight 8's. Funny tho, I had seen them in boats, but didn't cross my mind... Kool find, sure would have liked a tour of the beauty. Lol, more please, shop - field - parking lot, basement, doesn't matter !

great stuff thanks! thank you
It’s a tutorial for me, i’m reviving a ‘39 Roadmaster !!! Thanks
Hi Davin, I appreciate your knowledge of the internal combustion engine from old technology to new technology. Thank you sir.
there is a vacuum switch on the carburetor which is operated by the gas pedal.Turn on the ignition and press down on the adcelerator.
Swap in the already rebuilt straight eight! Drive that puppy! Nice work Davin.
Lines on those pre war cars are just classy. No matter the make .
that vacuum driven starter switch is pretty cool, never seen anything like that
Weird seeing it right on top of the exh manifold. You'd think the heat would kill it.
@UberLummox it's on the intake manifold not the exhaust
@@Cambone13 Exh manifold is directly below that.
Well, that was fun! Thanks
And as Dr Frankenstein would say, "ITS ALIVE". And like my 1966 Buick, it's SPECIAL.
Must of had a few inlet valves stuck, by the looks of the blow back thru the carby . Well done
Wow, it sounds great!
When I was 16 in 1996 I had to use my official arm console paintbrush's handle to start my 82 Camaro 305 like the screwdriver in the video when it was cold outside.
A vise grip is my preferred wrench for everything.
That would be an Excellent resto project
On my 39 Special, the start was on the gas pedal linkage.
Motor sounds pretty smooth.
Would luv to see this restored!

Davin is one of Hagerty's greatest assets.
Love it, I can't wait to watch! Have a great day!
Awesome. Easy to follow and learn from. So much better than finger puppet guy elsewhere. 🙄. Keep up the great work. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Is this going to be a tear down rebuild in the aeqsome still photo magic!? Would love to go for a drive in that thing. That weather sure doesnt look like the weather I just left earlier today in northern michigan!
👌😁👍 Man I’ve been missing these videos !!
*More Davin, please!*
More Davin on Buicks
Agree
Absolutely this. This is the very best piece of the haggerty channel. Every car he starts, every redline rebuild, they're all the best. Concentrate on Davin!
Of all the Hagerty sectors, Redline Rebuild wirh Devin is the only one I care to watch.
love these series
You're right... Gas pedal works the starter. I have a 37 two-door sedan.
Keep them coming
I had to pause the video at one point to see the house in the background. I know exactly where this is in Portage Michigan.
Sweet, now let's get it on the road,,❤❤
12 volts yes. Only thing this time should maybe a 12 v coil. 6 volt wiring much heavier than 12 v. Starter will easily handle 12 v . Later on you will need 12 bulbs generator and voltage regulator. Good job, Davin.
That thing is cool looking man can I love watching your good mechanic can you put the good work man and keep coming with the videos I love watching
Wow that's cool as hell yeah man that sounds great to me too here 😢😢😢
Amazing Buick!!❤
love these films...
Wasn’t the starter button on the floor like the high beams years ago?
Wow. I'd love to have this,,!
Now we have some squirt going, with a carb pic, would make a great shirt.
For jump starts, we use 12v most the time, spins faster, bit hotter spark, don't hurt for this
Outstanding!
ad timing messed up the money shot
