- In 1967, at a time when there were almost no Black reporters on television, Belva Davis began working at KPIX in San Francisco; she is believed to be the first Black female TV reporter in the western United States. "60 Minutes" correspondent Bill Whitaker (who, like many journalists, walked in her footsteps) looks back at her career, and how making a dream a reality became her legacy.

yeah, we watched Belva Davis during the 70's abd 80's also. She was the no-BS voice on the TV you just had to listen to. Had no idea that classy Bill Whitacker was associated with her. His gesture at the end of this video sums it up for many of us.

As a kid who grew up in the Bay Area in the 60s and 70s this was a nostalgic and wonderful recap of the challenges of those times, and I clearly remember watching Belva. It brought a tear to my eye. God bless you Belva Davis.

As a 5th generation Californian I watched her on KPIX, KRON and then KQED. Always looked forward to Ms. Davis on the bay area tv news stations and LOVED when she became THE broadcaster/host on KQED 9 in San Francisco. So many people, from ALL walks of life, me included, became better informed because of her.
Belva Davis has always been a legend here in the Bay Area. Very fortunate to grow up seeing her on tv.

I am not a spring chicken. So, when I saw this segment about Belva Davis, it brought back childhood memories. We are white, but my stylish mother always wore her black hair in a similar fashion to Belva's, and I noticed this as a child. We were always a newsy family and since there were few news sources, we would sometimes see her and always compared her hairstyle to my mom's! Such a wonderful story, too!!!

Belva Davis (born Belvagene Melton; October 13, 1932) is an American television and radio journalist. She is the first African-American woman to become a television reporter on the U.S. West Coast. She has won eight Emmy Awards and been recognized by the American Women in Radio and Television and National Association of Black Journalists.
After growing up in Oakland, California, Davis began writing freelance articles for magazines in 1957. Within a few years, she began reporting on radio and television. As a reporter, Davis covered many important events of the day, including issues of race, gender, and politics. She became an anchorwoman and hosted her own talk show, before retiring in 2012. I also wonder if Tremaine Davis Hawkins Richardson who was the daughter of Oakland Restaurant Owner Founder of The Great Lois Davis "The Pie Queen" Mother Lois Davis was a Eternal life long Member of Ephesians COGIC.

The story should definitely be in a book.. You know as you age you really realize you only have 1 life.. she lived her's to the best of her ability and beyond... Being there during all of the decades sharing news and keeping us informed... Again I have never heard of her but I'll tell you what I have been definitely inspired today more so than ever... God bless you and your family.. these are the type of story is I'm talking about that keeps you chugging right along for whatever it is that you may decide to do with your life. I had a limited news media credentials for the 1996 Democratic National Convention at the United Center on Chicago's Near West Side. I was pool coverage for several major music and urban culture magazines, including URB and the Source. I found my best stories in the rafters and off the main convention floor, including a 28-year-old female alternate delegate from Oklahoma who questioned whether a second nomination and second term for Bill Clinton would make a difference for the nation.

Dellums a Pullman Porter's Son Marine/1st Black Congressman elected to Congress now held by his aide El Paso Texas Born Barbara Tutt-Lee.John Daniel George a Palatka Florida Native, but raised in Atlanta a graduating classmate he and his wife married in SF in 1958 Cal and MIT/ Claflin, SC Alumnus ,and graduating seniors from BTW High School 🏰 In the class of MLK, Jr. He was an social justice attorney and she was a Berkeley Oakland Public School Teacher. John George made inroads as a 1968 John George For Congress against Republican powerful incumbent Cong.Cohen narrowly losing the Seat and encouraged Mr. Dellums to run four years later. And it has been an Afro-American held seat since 1972 George won on the County Level as A Supervisor for Alameda County when President James Earl Carter was elected President 1976 Mrs. BELVA DAVIS MOORE covered many a story in her height of her broadcasting career in the Bay Area and was Simply Blessed. 🏺🫒☮️🌉
One would have to research the Bay Area TV Archive at San Francisco State University. That story aired sometime between July 1, 1977 and January 3, 1999 when the mayor of Oakland was black. The database is online.
