Lion Genetics Part 6: An Update on the New Nomadic Male

- A few months ago Shamwari Private Game Reserve introduced a new male lion to the reserve as part of the reserve’s ongoing conservation efforts to ensure healthy genetics within the lion population of the area. This beautiful male has assimilated well to his new environment and has covered a lot of ground while exploring his new dominion. Head Ranger Andrew Kearney follows up with an update on the nomadic male’s progress.

I have been anticipating this update on this breathtaking, muscular big boy. It makes me very happy to hear the great news that all is well for this content looking fella and to see this magnificent wonder. The cubs are still alive, no conflict amongst the big guys, can't ask for anything better than this, may this course stay as is and these stunning boys form a real coalition.Thanks for the wonderful update.

Hi Andrew, thank you ever so much for the update on Jack. It’s so lovely to see him again & to know he’s doing well. I’m so relieved to learn that he has moved back up to the northern section of the property and away from the southern male & pride. And of course, along with everyone else, I too hope that Jack continues to interact positively with the northern pride, and that they accept him as their dominant male. Jack needs the company, just as the northern pride should have a dominant male of their own to look after & protect them. Fingers crossed all continues to go well and we see Jack assimilate with the pride & welcome some cubs in the coming months. Jack has been alone now too long. So thank you again for the update & can’t wait for the next one.
He is totally stunning. I hope he finds company soon and can start building his pride.

I really hope that he can hook up with the northern pride soon. Lions are so social cats and knowing that he’s been on his own for almost two years now (he lost his sister around May 2020 still back when he was at Addo) is a bit heartbreaking.

Hello Andrew wow this boy is just absolutely Spectacular. I love him already. I hope he can aquire a coalition partner and i really hope he gets his own pride. His cubs will be something else. We are working on bringing you an update - him being nomadic it sometimes difficult to track him down when we are out filming, but he does get sighted quite regularly by the various guides on the reserve

His right front paw doesn't look right at rest and does he have a new gash on his upper forehead and sore on left shoulder?
The gashes on his forehead seem quite apparent to me, however I do not see anything particularly wrong with his right front paw nor his left shoulder. I watched again to try and see what you see on his paw and shoulder. The forehead is definitely different from the old footage where he is moving. I am certain the gashes will heal to (nearly) invisible soon. Battle wounds are inevitable. Jack must have had a run in with an animal that was not too happy to see him☺️🦁

Was this initially a wild lion? Or was it captive and then released?
He has always been wild and still is- he was just transferred from conservancy to another as part of a broader lion genetics program.
That is a sub adult probably nomad male. Tried to probably invade a territory and was taken out by a full grown male Lion. Would be my guess.
