DIY Folding Serving Tray

- I wanted to make something cute to hold cupcakes for my daughter's birthday. I also don't have a lot of room for storage so I needed something that I could easily fold away and store.
I did end up adding feet on the bottom so it wouldn't slide. I don't think I explained how I lined up the shelf supports well enough...to make sure they ended up level I took each of the 4 legs and measured on each of them from the top on both sides and marked 7in, 14in, and 21in. Then I drew a line connecting the line on both sides (which you see me doing in the video). This line will be where you want the shelf support bottom to line up. Hope this helps, if not please leave a comment. :)
I am not an expert, just a regular woodworker, sharing my experiences with you. This is meant for entertainment purposes only.

Love it, you totally should Kelly. Thanks for the comment 😊
I’m so glad that you’re doing this because I’ve been wanting to make one but I just it all together to do it . 😊❤️
Yay, you should definitely make one. Please let me know how it goes 😊

Thanks Tim
I'm totally making one of these!
That boy is sure a ham! Love the video!
great stand cakes look great too
We have this all cut out and ready to go… what keeps the legs from sliding “open”?
Few post down she replied. 1. Put rubber feet on bottom.2 she added short shelve to bottom.
It still does not make sense.
I would drill holes on each leg and add a rope knotted at each end .at hole.
@@paintilludrop we made this two years ago, we ended up putting two little wood blocks under one board to keep it from sliding out. Worked perfect. It’s been used many many times for many different things! A great little piece! 🩷
I want to make. I see that the short 1x2 that hold trays were set at a slight angle. How much of an angle?
Just what i needed. Great job and great idea
Al St Aubin yay! Let me know how it goes.
How much did spend on the materials
This was so long ago I don’t remember. I used very inexpensive wood so it was definitely on the cheaper side. I hope to make one again soon with a high quality wood to compare.
How many cupcakes did this hold?
I had 16 on it but you could definitely fit more
Great video how many cupcakes does it hold ?
Smiles-Behind-Lupus that’s a great question. I’m guessing it’ll hold around 30. If you want it to hold more you can always make the shelves a little longer. 😊
Hi sorry I don’t want to sound rude but I’m trying to make this in your measurements are different in the beginning of the video then they are the ones you’re talking about so I’m kind of confused on the wood links that I need
Debbie Clark Hi Debbie, no problem at all so here is my cut list, keep in mind you can totally change it if you want something bigger or smaller 😊
Shelves -
Using the 1x8 I cut
- 11 1/2” long
- 16 1/4” long
- 20” long
Side pieces (using 1x2) -
- 4 at 25 1/2” long (cut at a 20 degree angle)
Shelf Supports (using 1x2) -
- 6 at 7 1/4” long
How were you able to slide in the three 1x8 in. shelves into a 7 1/4 in. gap. I believe, (and please correct me if I'm wrong) you meant to say you cut the six shelf supports at 8 1/4 in. long. Which would give you a 1/4 in. of play when sliding in the 1x8 in. shelves into the shelf supports.
I been looking for this... What is the angle you use on the ladder part??
Let me dig it out and check because I do t remember 😀
👌
Is there a way to make this without having to do 20 degree cuts? I just want Home Depot to cut all the wood for me.
You totally could and it would be just as strong. I just did it to give it a more clean look. 😀
Thank you for the reply. I’m a bit confused. Would you clarify the measurements? When I add up how many inches for the legs and supports, it adds to more than 144” long (if buying the 1x2x12ft).
Legs - 25.5” x 4 = 102”
Supports - 7.25 x 6 = 43.25”
Total = 145.5”
Am I doing something wrong and overthinking it?
What would i need if i wanted to make 2 off these ?
Alexis amaral you will want 1 - 1x8 8ft long, 2 - 1x2’s 12ft long, and 4 small hinges. Please let me know if I can help with anything else. Happy building 😊
What measurement did you use for the shelf boards to be leveled ?
Alexis amaral good question. I measured from the top of each support board on both sides at 7in, 14in, and 21in. Then drew a line connecting them so I knew right where the bottom of my shelf support should sit to hold the shelf level.
How long the legs?
Jessa Quibol mine were 25 1/2” but you can really do any size. Please let me know if you have any more questions. I’ll try to put this on my blog with more details soon.
what keeps it from sliding open?
Donald Cone I put rubber feet on the bottoms of the legs and as an after thought added small 1” boards on the bottom of the lowest shelf to keep the legs from sliding out. Unfortunately I thought of this after the video 🤦♀️
Around the House thanks.
@@AroundtheHouse I put the little wood pieces under the bottom board too.
Maybe add that in a pinned comment or in the description box?
I made it two yrs ago and it has been a favorite and been borrowed by quite a few friends as well.
I use it for my coffee mugs at Christmas at my coffee/cocoa bar!
What are the measurements??
Leslee Tello set-up mine is 23 3/4in tall, the bottom of the base sits 21 1/4in wide, 9in deep. Please let me know if you were looking for other measurements
@@AroundtheHouse at wat degree did u put the the 71/4 pieces on to hold shelves
Can you ship one to me?
If I made things to sell I totally would. 😊 I usually just make things once so I can create new content.
