Looking forward to the seeing how the G2 cooks. The bigger insulated fire box, removable baffle plate, and new stack are nice upgrades. Old Country had to get you back to promoting their smokers again. 😅😅
There it is... My first smoker ever. Thanks for another informative and fun video, Josh. Looking forward to the seasoning and then the first cook on the new Brazos 2.0. Keep'em coming please.
I just recently purchased old country G2. I have been cooking on a box store offset for years. I live in Michigan and the weather is unbearable in the winter sometimes. I don’t have the luxury of smoking inside or in an enclosure out of the elements. It’s an affordable smoker in a sense that it’s designed for a household cooking. For those who think it’s expensive cooker, checkout Franklin bbq pit price and compare. This is a cheaper alternative with the same thickness of metal. Yes , the brazos give little cooking space, but the other features make up the difference. If I am cooking for a lot of people, I have few other smokers that I use that require little less attention while still managing fire in an offset. Before purchasing any pit figuring out your space and weather conditions you’re going to be cooking in is a key to making the right decision. Thanks for the video.. I plan to cook without the baffle plates and the deflector.
All good tips, and you're right. It's got the features without hitting that Franklin price point, which I think is mainly paying for a name at that point. I gotta go to Troy, MI in late January. Can't wait to freeze to death!!
The Franklin is most all 1/4" steel. The g2 is only 1/4" at the main/bottom chamber. The sides and lid is 3/16" steel on the G2. Still a nice pit though. Hope it serves you well. The Franklin is very expensive.
I just bought a Brazos this weekend. It came with 2" casters and the baffle plate was installed exactly like this one. They must be making it standard on the new Brazos going forward.
Wow, this appears to be a straight upgrade to the Brazos. Literally it checks all the boxes. Collector, taller stack, insulated firebox without that goofy grill door (still might get somebody to mod the firebox on mine to resemble this...), removable baffle plate.
I’d like the G2 model one day. I love my char-griller grand champ having graduated from a 2004 Masterbuilt 40 inch cabinet propane smoker. Now learning the char-griller traits the old country is next.
Love Old Country Smokers! Bought a Wrangler years ago and was the best decision I've made in smoking meat. It is far superior to most other offsets on the market and has a much thicker gage of steal. It not only holds in the heat exceptionally well its going to last much longer also. I'd love to more up in size to the Brazos or one of these G2s but need to save up some $.
I bought a Oklahoma Joe's Offset for $400. I ended up spending an additional $400 on supplies and things to get the smoker going. If you think you're going to be a serious smoker, I recommend going a little higher and get something like this. Yes, you're spending more up front but now you don't have to upgrade. I want to sell my Okie Joe and get something nicer with more capacity.
Glad you have this mindset after experiencing it. Alot of times it's worth spending the money up front. But I almost did the same thing you did before getting my brazos. It's tough.
I learned on my pecos. I insulated firebox with firebrick, removed baffle, put locks on the door, extended smokestack to 42" and maintains Temps very well in upstate sc. I just had a 120 build when the G2 came out but I might still buy one. Tks for the video
Good overview on this smoker! I ordered and received mind already, seasoned it already (I am impressed with how the insulated fire box reduced wood consumption, maybe 35 to 40% and longer burn times before adding wood up to 50%) There is a learning curve on managing your fire - very easy to add to much wood. I would have ordered the Lonestar 20x42 offset (even their 20x36 model has allot more grate space than the G2) however Academy had a 20% off discount before xmas and since our Florida home is close to a store no frt. cost. This smoker will end up in our Ohio home so the 20% off and no shipping worked and made up for the lack of features and poorer quality compared to Lonestar models. We plan to sell the Ohio home in 4 to 6 years so I wanted a less expensive offset smoker in Ohio. I have Lonestar 24x48 offset, and one of their amazing pellet smokers (even allow you to burn a 50/50 mix of wood chips) in Florida.
“Reduced wood consumption, maybe 35 to 40% and longer burn times before adding wood up to 50%” are nice features, which will get better with practice. They save money and free up time. Out of curiosity, Is this compared to the $4,195.00 24” x 48 (1/4” firebox) Lone Star Offset Smoker? or Is this compared to the $4,890.00 24” x 48 (1/4” firebox) Lone Star Offset Smoker? Plus, shipping.
no I used the lonestar 20x36 which is 400 to 500 more than the G2. They use 3/16 inch steel for the cook chamber and 1/4 inch for the fire box. jump on their website and look at their cook chamber, interesting design, a 20 inch smoker with an lower grate that is 20 1/2 inch wide. The LSG has allot more cooking space along with other standard features that nice to haves. I wanted a more competitive offset for the Ohio home so along with the 20% off and no frt, cost on the G2 I ended up with the G2 ( frt. on a 500 lb smoker would run about $500 to Ohio, if there was no frt. on the lonestar I would have gone with the lonestar) This is the first time I used an insulated firebox, if your buying all your wood over time this will be a fair amount of savings there. I am lucky to have a fair amount of trees on both of my properties so I make my own smoking wood. Which will be nice to cut to size my own splits, I have some 12 inch long wood which is good but the perfect splits could be 8 to 10 inch long!@@alejandrosantos6774
Really good story! I hope some of the people in the comments see this real world experience. I don't think people understand the value of the ease of use with these upgrades.
I'm curious. I have the LS 20x42 offset which I love. I only wish there was an additional 2" above the top rack as most of my butts hit the top. I am looking for another offset but LS wait time and $900 delivery is making me look at others. Can you elaborate on your "poorer quality" comment? Is it welds?
The reason why the middle/upper thermometer port is important is because smokers that have a baffle can give very different temp readings in the middle vs the two ends. I'm thinking about getting one of these, and if I do, I'll be removing any baffles and putting a thermometer in all three ports.
True, but you can also learn how hot that upper area is by performing tests and knowing what the temp will be based off your bottom probes. That's also the best way to learn whether the baffles are necessary, especially on a smoker as small as this one. Plus, if you're not going to use the top shelf, it's not as important.
I’m super stoked about this, been cooking bbq for almost 10 years. Bought my first offset last year, grand champ XD . It provides okay product but there is so much baby sitting and temp swings. I really want a better quality smoker made of thicker steel but really can’t justify 4-7 k . This might just be the answer. I’m excited to see a full cooking review of this pit! Thanks for the info great video
This definitely may be the answer then. The temp controls on those smaller pits can be a real workout and pretty discouraging. I know so many people that stopped using offsets because of it.
Absolutely loving this smoker, and looking to upgrade from my Okie Joe's. My only hesitation is the size!! If anything I'd want to increase my cooking capacity, however this went backwards, my OK Joe actually has a tad more cooking surface. Taking my time doing my homework buy once cry once!
People keep saying it's all 1/4" steel. It's not. The only 1/4" steel is the bottom/main chamber and maybe the inside firebox liner. The lid and sides are 3/16" and the outside liner of the fire box may be 1/8" from what I could tell. I didn't spend any time looking at that. It's still a nice pit but I'd like it to be the same length as the Brazos. I don't own a Brazos or any other offset at the moment but wouldn't mind having one.
Nice review and pit wish i could afford it. Im new to smoking and recently purchased char giller Grand champ for $600. Hopefully down the road saving i can look at something like this in the future. Don't understand all the crappy comments i really enjoy your videos..... Subscribed
Thanks for video been waiting for someone to review. That said 1900 plus 400 dollars for ship from academy is pushing this to 2500 dollar range. I live in Texas where they have these at Buccees but getting it home is a problem. Bluesmoke smokers has a pit that is 1700 and you get a better smoker more value that this g2. Too many options out there so I’m just waiting
Oh damn, I just looked at those. Those really don't look bad, especially the 3/8". I'll have to try to figure out how they are making those for so damn cheap.
@@FattysFeasts They had a post on their instagram in early february stating the increase is due to rising costs of materials. Still a great price for the quality of the build but I'm worried that they will continue to climb if materials keep getting more expensive. I need to start budgeting asap lol
"So there's really no comparison between these smokers..." But we heathens still wanna see a comparison video, lol. I believe Jeremy Yoder was consulted for the G2. Great overview.
Depends on if you want to buy used or not, or what's available in your area. Where I used to live in CT, there were basically zero smokers available used since most people don't use offsets.
You couldn't just have someone load the Brazzos into the back of a U-Haul truck or trailer and bring it down? I'm ready to jump back into offsets. I'm thinking about this one or Mad Scientist's smoker. I'm also looking into used ones
I could have, but my life didn't allow that at the time LOL. Funny I'm responding to this comment while watching his video about his smoker. If you've done offsets before, then I would definitely spend some cash if you can, but used is also a great way to go if you can get one in decent shape.
How often do you have to add a wood like to the fire chamber in this smoker? I know with my brazos I have to add like every 15-20 min….also is it worth upgrading my brazos to the G2? Does it render a brisket fat cap like a big offset?
You have to add considerably less than the brazos. Check out this video of the temp test for more info: th-cam.com/video/pYnFmwUSmGQ/w-d-xo.html&lc=UgwZ1ogGkLgbOrkjBZV4AaABAg
I was all set to grab a Brazos…now I’m really split between that and the g2 for my first offset. I have experience smoking on kamado style grills, pk’s, and pellet grills but am finally wanting to take the plunge for an offset. If I would be using it in nice weather 95% of the time, is the g2 worth the upgrade? It’s about a $600 difference delivered.
I just responded to someone on Instagram asking literally the same question. Is this the same person? 😂 If not, I will give you my thoughts, but I wanted to make sure!
The insulation, cooking chamber seal and even stack size issues with Pecos/Brazos can be compensated for with a few mods. The cook chamber size however is a non-moddable downside to this smoker. If I'm gonna drop 2k on a smoker, might as well get a Workhorse 1975, Franklin or other top tier option. I wouldn't move up from my Pecos to this.
To be honest, I dont know if I'd move to a Workhorse or a Franklin from the Pecos. If I'm spending the money on one of those, I want more cooking space, which is why I like the Patriot Pits.
As long as they keep quality control in order it'll be hard to beat for the price. If they came with a 24" diameter smoker they'd really do some damage 😂
That's a tough one. I haven't seen a custom cover for it. If you're able to keep it under cover, it should be fine, but you can use a tarp if worse comes to worse.
@@FattysFeasts yup. I'm just outside of Boston and the shipping quote is $485. It sucks, because there aren't really any local reasonably priced pit shops out here.
Come on, 2K and they won't even give you $15 Thermostat. What is the thickness of the metal? Should be 3/8" minimum. And they probably charged you an extra two grand for the counter weights on the door.
You actually could grill on this smoker, just add a basket or dump charcoal in the cook chamber. You could even just build a roaring fire in the firebox and take the plates out
That is actually a really decent price for a smoker. The shipping is not bad either considering the higher / heavier you go, the more it's gonna be. I know some people paying $1500 for shipping other smokers.
It's definitely a step up from the pecos as far as features and ease of use go. I can honestly say I probably wouldn't upgrade from the brazos, mainly due to the same cooking space.
I guess no one has ever heard of Big Phill's Blue Smoke Smokers. For $1700 you can get a 24″ x 48″ 3/8″ Wall Pipe and 24″ 3/8″ Wall Pipe with 1/4″ End Caps smoker that rivels that $7000 pit. Don't waste your money on the G2. Well, minus the tailer package and the counterweight, notwithstanding the beautiful engraving! Blue, beats the G2 in my opinion.
@@Dan-fc1nc No I don't think the trailer is a G2. What I was trying to convey is for the buck, the "Blue Smoker" would be a far better purchase than that of the G2. $1700 for the Blue, and $1800 for the G2. I understand that I may not have made that clear enough in my first post. The only thing the Blue has in common with the Patriot trailer package is the size of the cooking chamber and maybe the fire box. The patriot pits are a work of art. It is easy to see Jason takes a great deal of pride in his builds.
I'm not sure if we can even come close to comparing the Blue and the Patriot, for many reasons. However, even though I've never heard of them until publishing this video, I am curious how they are making them for so cheap. Everyone is struggling to get material at a reasonable price, and most smokers that look like they make sell for $3500 plus. That just makes me a bit concerned about corners that may be cut. Do you own one and could tell me more?
@@FattysFeasts No I don't own a Blue Smoke smoker. I had a local guy here in California build one for me. On Big Phil's web page (the blue smoke part) he says the pipes are blemished, which could be the reason for the cheaper price.
Durability and Longevity: remember: durability of an insulated firebox, will withstand prolonged use and exposure to high temperatures. Compare this to a non-insulated 1/4" firebox, where potential issues such as warping or heat loss over time may occur.

To be honest, I dont know if I'd move to a Workhorse or a Franklin from the Pecos. If I'm spending the money on one of those, I want more cooking space, which is why I like the Patriot Pits.
If you buy a Franklin for $2k let everyone know where you got it. You might need another $3K for the firebox door with his name cut into it.
They need to give the brazos an insulated box and make the stack about 6" taller and that's all.
I mean, that's basically what they did, plus a collector.
Affordable is definitely a relative term.
For sure. In the smoker world it’s a good price, but no doubt expensive
She did a happy dance because all of the socks from the dryer matched.
As long as they keep quality control in order it'll be hard to beat for the price. If they came with a 24" diameter smoker they'd really do some damage 😂
Wellll you never know what will happen!!

Hell yeah! Never thought it would be!

I would say 70, but let's round down to something nice like 69
Them wagon wheels gotra go lol
That would be nice, but I would think it would up the price.
I’ve gone and done it and ordered a G2… being shipped all the way to Canada… any tips on a cover that would fit? Not many local options up here :(
That's a tough one. I haven't seen a custom cover for it. If you're able to keep it under cover, it should be fine, but you can use a tarp if worse comes to worse.
It's more like $500 for the shipping to the Northeast.
Damn really? Good to know. It's amazing how much shipping prices have skyrocketed..
@@FattysFeasts yup. I'm just outside of Boston and the shipping quote is $485. It sucks, because there aren't really any local reasonably priced pit shops out here.
Ugh, that's terrible to hear. Maybe you could save a few bucks and move down south 😁😁@@x63

“Affordable”
Man I feel so broke. I thought me spending $1400 on my Camp Chef Pellet grill was a lot. $1800!
LOL affordable in the world of quality offset smokers, as most go for $3500 plus. Not so much affordable to normal people like you and me 😁
Come on, 2K and they won't even give you $15 Thermostat. What is the thickness of the metal? Should be 3/8" minimum. And they probably charged you an extra two grand for the counter weights on the door.
That's just cost of materials today unfortunately.
Is the smoker crooked or the ground?
It’s a little slanted to allow the grease to easily run towards the drain. It doesn’t affect cooking
Thanks for the answer man!
Shipping is $500 from academy.
I've heard that now. It's insane how much shipping cost has gone up.
Its $1800 bucks though I'll stick with the Oklahoma Joe Highlander
This will perform much better than that. I know it's more expensive, but I think it's definitely worth it comparing the products.
Slow down and everything you are chasing will come around and catch you.

U got alot haters in your comments 😅... would have enjoyed to see you cook some steak or rib on that grill
Mmmmm smoked steak anyone?
Welcome to all of my video comment sections 😂 Not to spoil anything, but that may be on the list!
I can't tell if you're being serious or yourself 😂
You actually could grill on this smoker, just add a basket or dump charcoal in the cook chamber. You could even just build a roaring fire in the firebox and take the plates out
No man can succeed in a line of endeavor which he does not like.
Only 1899.00
Yes…
2500.00 after taxes and shipping? Hell to the no.
You do know the firebox is fully insulated and 3/8" right? Just saying.
That is actually a really decent price for a smoker. The shipping is not bad either considering the higher / heavier you go, the more it's gonna be. I know some people paying $1500 for shipping other smokers.
@@FattysFeasts I won't, not a chance

They should have sent this smoker to someone else to review....
And yet here you are. 😂
Oh really? Who?
Snowflakes are one of natures most fragile things, but just look what they can do when they stick together.
It looks strangely uneven.
It is slightly slanted to make sure the grease runs towards the drain. It doesn’t affect cooking in any way
I dont see any value going pecos/brazos to that. Looks 12% better for double triple the money.
It's definitely a step up from the pecos as far as features and ease of use go. I can honestly say I probably wouldn't upgrade from the brazos, mainly due to the same cooking space.
Wow! 12% better. too funny you know firebox is 3/8, double walled and has more material in it correct?
No way that thing is worth $1800. Maybe $999.99 at most
What smokers are you comparing to exactly?
Dude, you know firebox is fully insulated right?
@@FattysFeastsyeah… never heard back from him 🤔😉🤣

I guess no one has ever heard of Big Phill's Blue Smoke Smokers. For $1700 you can get a 24″ x 48″ 3/8″ Wall Pipe and 24″ 3/8″ Wall Pipe with 1/4″ End Caps smoker that rivels that $7000 pit. Don't waste your money on the G2. Well, minus the tailer package and the counterweight, notwithstanding the beautiful engraving! Blue, beats the G2 in my opinion.
You think that trailer is an old country gen 2? It is not, and the blue doesn't even come close to that trailer.
Too expensive for what you get.
What would you like to see different?
Durability and Longevity:
remember: durability of an insulated firebox, will withstand prolonged use and exposure to high temperatures.
Compare this to a non-insulated 1/4" firebox, where potential issues such as warping or heat loss over time may occur.
