Honestly, I liked having the NBA factory. But, long term, I believe Mark Pope will build an extremely strong program by giving a balance of freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors.

Im glad I turned off all the devices and collected my thoughts when i heard the news. But after punching the heavy bag, taking a shower, taking a nap, reading Seth Davis's tweets, Reeding Rex's tweets, reading Oscar Combs tweets, watching that video going viral on youtube about Pope's offensive system...I see the vision and Im cautiously ready to get behind this hire.
I grew up during the Pitino era. I was a punk ass 19 year old in 1996 idolizing that team which Mark was co caption and a big part of. He's literally a genius Rhodes Scholar with a 160 IQ who finished medical school while playing in the NBA. So let's let this Mensa brained, with the work ethic and toughness of an NBA journeyman enforcer, and a burning passion for Kentucky Basketball do his thing! Super smart people with incredible work ethics tend to figure things out and succeed. And the thought of one of players I grew up idolizing leading our program and succeeding give me chills. I hope it happens and wish him the absolute best!!!!!

Me, too. Coach Pope is one of our own, loves Kentucky basketball, and has the potential to be our own Dan Hurley, long term.
He has the potential to have a similar story to Dan Hurley because UConn plucked Coach Hurley out of relative obscurity. UK has started that story just now with Mark Pope.
Donovan turned us down twice already. He publicly stated he was committed to the Bulls. There are also other reports that he said he wasn't interested. You don't wait a week or longer on someone who's been out of college basketball for 9 years who has a high likely hood of turning you down anyway, then handicap your new coach by giving him an even later start to building a roster.
Mark Pope will do a great job......look at what he did with a middle of the road BYU. Really good coach!!!!
Pope might shock a lot of people at UK. BYU records was 23-11. UK record was 23-10 this season. The bigger difference is that UK had like 10 5 stars in the roster lol.

Listen!! The majority of HoF coaches were "not accomplished " when they started at great programs (see UCLA, Duke, Connecticut,Indiana).
Coach Cal, himself, turned us around immediately in 2009. A capable coach can make a huge difference in Year One. I’m so much looking forward to seeing what Coach Pope does next fall, even with the roster changes and turmoil right now.
Money may not matter to coaches but it’ll matter to recruits

Watching the video of BYU winning at Kansas, they would have have blown Kansas out had they had better players. So many missed gimmes after the offense got them open. But they still won! Kentucky couldn't beat Kansas last year (though it was a decent game).
Donovan has been away from the NCAA basketball scene for 10 years...He would have to hit the recruiting trail right off the bat...Has not been around the new Portal ...plus he Loves coaching in the NBA

Well, inasmuch as UK could have had Billy Donovan “…next week,” hypothetically, if the Chicago Bulls kept winning their basketball games, taking it all the way out to June at maximum, that’s a ton of time gone for UK. When you feel under a time crunch, you’re less likely to be impressed by a reputation.
As a “toxic” UK fan. I would rather watch a well coached team that I have no idea what will happen each year/game, give it all they got, than what I know with Cal. A freshman heavy team with elite players, that take until March to learn how to sort of play as a team, then may or may not get it enough to win a few games in the tournament. Then, watch players go to NBA and become superstars when in what would be their junior year. We literally have to study and memorize the roster every year. Only to watch half the players not live up to the hype.

You kind of are saying this is a bad hire, though. And I don’t blame you because on paper it doesn’t look as good as what the great UK demands.
BUT, as a byu fan, I’ll tell you we’re sorry to have lost him. What many people don’t know is that byu is a tough place to run a program because they have a very strict honor code which makes recruiting tough. How many nba ballers come out of byu? Not very many if ever. But look at what Pope has been able to do there. He’s done A LOT with what he has to work with. Pope will have much better talent on average at Kentucky and he’ll do great things for you guys. I’ll be rooting for you.
BYU beat Kansas, Iowa State, Baylor, just to name a few. He plays a better brand of bball than Calipari does, he adapts, switches up D's and understands that big men can do more than play defense. The Pope is back in blue. Go BBN!

I think the pressure just quickly shifted from Cal to Barnhart after this. With hires like Joker, Billy G, Elzy and now Pope. His success rate is maybe .500 with the BIG job hires. This is also the guy that gave Cal the lifer contract and now made Pope who was maybe not even a top 40 coach a top 10 paid coach.
Someone gotta tell Barnhart Jesus doesn't win ball games. Quit trying to hire saints and go get dudes who win balls game in the month of March. There were plenty of them out there not named Hurley or Drew.... This is the kind of hire that may and SHOULD get you fired if it doesnt work out given the other options that were out there.

billy donovan has been out college basketball for 9 years thats a terrible hire in its self he was barely in the one and done ear and hasnt even experienced the transfer portal or NIL era not a good fit for kentucky sorry

Don’t love it and don’t hate it. I think he can at least get the program on the right track to the point where the only thing missing is the most elite talent, which have not been dominating in March like the stronger and more experienced players have been dominating. If they just can’t get talent but we keep our facilities amazing and we fix NIL, then maybe in a couple of years we can plug in another head coach and we can have the time to develop a slam dunk plan for a new head coach.
