- Is Mark Pope the right guy for Kentucky? We are joined by Jake Hatch of Locked on Cougars, who's covered Mark Pope throughout his time at BYU. We run through the resume of Mark Pope and find out what he's like when it comes to recruiting, X's and O's, and leading a college basketball team. Is this just a sentimental pick for Kentucky AD Mitch Barnhart?
And more importantly, with Pope having never won a tournament game as a head coach, can he lead Kentucky back to deep tourney runs and ultimately winning a championship? Will the Kentucky boosters back him and help with NIL? The 51-year old Pope will certainly have his work cut out for him in Lexington.

With all the talent at UK, and a lesser group of players at BYU, they both exited the NCAA in the first round! :-)

As a Kentucky fan I can say I understand why a lot of potential coaches say no, especially if they have a good gig already, the pressure we put on winning is crazy and I'm guilty of it, but it's Kentucky that's part of it, GBB!!

Eventhough Kentucky didn't get one of those "big name" coaches, I'm pretty excited to see what Pope can do.
He already knows what Kentucky is all about, and I've seen his players actually run plays and defend. When I watched that a while back, i thought to myself, just think what he could do if he wasn't a coach at a private school?
He'll do horrible recruiting horrible transfers and unfortunately it's gonna take several losing seasons to show you all that this the SEC not BYU and whatever conference their in

As opposed to Scheyer at Duke or Davis at UNC? Neither had any head coaching experience and both were following legends. This will be KY’s 7th head coach since I’ve been a fan. I’m keeping an open mind.

I’m really disappointed on this hire. I like Mark as a person but this isn’t the hire I would have gone with. I believe we could have waited a week or two to make a hire. I wonder how much of a search Barnhart has done? I don’t think Pope is cut out for this program.

@@beckywilson9443 yeah I have a lot of friends in Lexington due to my playing days at EKU none of those people wanted cal to leave. I think the negative narratives and the torn relationship between the AD and cal kind of ran its course.

i appreciate mark pope for his hard work at my team on winning the title for us...he was a decent player but he made mistakes that he shouldnt have made we love mark pope here as a player but a guy with not much coaching stuff i just dont know if he is a gonna make a go0d coach coz we want to win titles we do understand its gonna take some time but we dont want to wait another decade

@@user-cq9td2ig4w I have wanted a change in the coaching staff for a few years now but I can’t fault Cal for keeping Kentucky basketball relevant. At least the program was talked about and kids wanted to come here. For crying out loud Dick Vitale had UK in the championship this year, so we were still relevant in eyes of college basketball. As for money to get players. Popular coaches are going to be the ones that draw kids with money, not no name coaches. If they hire Pope, we will be back in this same position in 2-3 years. It’s just not a good move for the program.

I thought it was time for Calipari to go. This is a night mare waiting to happen as a UK fan to see what UofL has went with Kenny Payne for the last 2 years and we do something every bit as stupid knowing the this is going to be a flop!!!! Get use to having losing season the next 2 years and then being right back at it then having to look for another coach!!! Tired of hearing this is a big jump. He just finshed 5th in big 12, preseason 13th pick in big 12. How is sec bigger than big 12????? Scott drew coach's in big 12, and mark pope's team beat baylor, kansas, and bunch other good teams to finsh 5th in confrence. So please stop. Biggest question is recruiting. But thats with any coach. I am very happy with the hire. He will do big things in Lexington. He's gotta surrond hisself with good coachs, and couple elite recruiters!!!!! Lets roll, we got a coach thats got blue, KENTUCKY BLUE in his veins, heart and soul into this program.
