    More Tom Waits Please !!! His early work is such a poignant combination of that rough voice and that emotional piano. Still makes me cry. ("Just and Invitation to the Blues' - just sayin )

    I sat down at my keyboard and started working through this song with your video lesson. It got me remembering my mother in law, she used to sing the chorus while we cleaned the kitchen. Playing this song is therapeutic for the soul, thanks for the lesson Christian!

    Lovely video Brother Christian.
    Believe me or not, but this great song has actually a link to Denmark. Who should thought that. Not that you really care, but here is the story….
    A young Tom Waits visit Søborg near Copenhagen. At first the danish music-reporter didn’t like Waits. Thinks he sound like a silly Louis Armstrong parody, but over time he must give in.
    Well, Waits and his band came and made a very small studio concert and among the few visitors where a young employer named Mette Mathilde Bondo.
    They all went to Tivoli in Copenhagen for dinner and Waits where already there hitting on Mathilde. At first Mathilde find him a little strange. Waits talked as he sings and he was carrying a porn magazine in his pocket. He simply couldn’t believe that it was legal in Denmark. But when the dinner was over, they two agreed to carry one. They took to the danish rock band Gasolins apartment and they end up in a hotel room as described in the song.
    Waits (drunk and dizzy) wants Mathilde to go with him back to USA. Mathilde where young and declining his idea.
    These information is from a danish television show. Both Mathilde where interviewed and so was some of the guys who where there. (The concert and dinner). I can find out the exact title of the show if you need.
    For the record…. If you wanna see Mathilde your self, you can see her in this video along with the the lead vocalist from Gasolin. Kim Larsen. The video is from about the same time, as Waits meet Mathilde. th-cam.com/video/aautGCVfhiE/w-d-xo.html
    If you dislike links, you can also type “ Kim Larsen - Det Er En Kold Tid (Officiel Musikvideo)”
    The video takes 2 minutes and 12 second and pick that with an ugly man. Eyes closed and mouth wide open.
    Mathilde appears a few time and towards the end she play a little violin part.
    Later on she started a band with her husband. The bands name is Lasse og Mathilde and the biggest hit must be this one. th-cam.com/video/T6uFbhFSXX8/w-d-xo.html. Mathilde appears again with her violin and is about 60 kilo heavier than she were as young.
    What a long story and who even cares. But Denmark isn’t known for anything really, but we have a link to Waits and his lovely song Waltzing Mathilda.
    Take care Christian. Brother Peter find his own way out.

    I would absolutely lovr a tutorial on "Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis". The accompanying part to sing along with.
    I love that song so much. I'm hoping one day i'll be good enough on piano to just create my own version by using the chords... But... I'm not there yet.
    One of my favourite songs and the piano part is beautiful.

    Bravo Christian. Tom Trauberts Blues. Many Aussies feel this should be our national anthem. That is the song Waltzing Matilda. Our anthem Is Advance Australia Fair NOT God save the Queen. One day we will be a Republic and not part of the "british effin empire".

    Thanks. Well broken down. It's funny though reading all the comments about the 19th century Australian bush ballad Waltzing Mathilda based on the poem by Banjo Paterson. Tom just sampled the chorus of that old song for his chorus. Nothing else about the two songs is similar, although Banjo"s version, which ends in suicide, is arguably even more tragically sad.

    This is such a good depiction of what Tom Waits is playing! I would like to make a request. Would you be willing to do a video of Take It With Me? That’s my favorite of his songs. I’d like to learn to play it the way he does. I can hear that it’s relatively simple but there are some things he’s doing that I can quite make out and if love to see it laid out a bit. Thanks for the great videos!

    There's something I don't understand: why do ALL the tutorials teach this version where the right hand plays Tom's voice melody? The original doesn't have that melody...

    • @ChristianFuchsBlues
      @ChristianFuchsBlues  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are two songs with the same name. Waits wrote THIS song. So this is the original.

    • @buteverybodycallsmegiorgio
      @buteverybodycallsmegiorgio 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChristianFuchsBlues interesting. So the one he plays in his album Small Change is not the original, even though he composed the original?

    • @ChristianFuchsBlues
      @ChristianFuchsBlues  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@buteverybodycallsmegiorgio The only thing I know that the inofficial New Zealand hymn and national song is also called Waltzing Mathilde but is a very different song. And I know that Waits wrote the song I am teaching here. And that he sang the melody, cause his melody is the source of my tutorial...

    • @tomeast75
      @tomeast75 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Christian Fuchs I get what he is saying here. You have written the sung melody as a piano part. A guitarist like me finds this wrong because he wants to sing the melody and not play it.
      In this way your transcription is not accurate to the album track. Which I can imagine for a piano player is like "well dont play the melody then".
      As a beginner my question would be... is it that simple or should I do something instead of the melody on the right hand?
      BTW Waltzing Matilda is Australian and the original is not the same melody or tempo as Tom Waits although they are similar in many ways.
      Thanks for the excellent lesson which I am still working on!
      Tom

      @23phaedrus 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much Christian for this, it's brilliant. I have the same question as Giovanni though. He's not talking about the different versions of the song. It's that you play the vocal melody on the piano as well as what Waits plays on piano. I want to play the piano part and sing the vocals so we're wondering how the right hand should be adjusted so we can do that. Hope that makes sense. Thanks again for helping me play this beautiful song :)
