Thanks for this interesting documentary, the incredible contribution of these little aircraft carriers is so little flagged up today. It's very important in any balanced account of WW2, Atlantic and Pacific.
It's in 17,000 feet of water (one mile deeper than Titanic) and the hull is intact, meaning it would have to be cut open to get at the cargo. Currently impossible.
Nothing is impossible, and in fact, in 1974 the USNS Hughes Glomar Explorer (T-AG-193) did exactly that by bringing up a major part of the Soviet submarine K-129 in the Pacific. When it comes to humans obtaining gold, don't bet against them. And if they break it up, modern ROVs are quite capable of bringing up the shiny pieces.
It could be easily raised versus something like titanic. If in tact, it should be able to float and hoist with modern equipment, regardless of depth due to new wave machinery that has never been possible before.
@ 9.43 Allied codebreakers , What you mean is British codebreakers at Bletchley Park using Ultra, information gathered by the breaking of Enigma, the code used to contact German submarines throughout the war. The Americans had no part in this but hey, we don't need to bother mentioning that do we .
*Absolutely fascinating how USS Bogue tracked and sank the Golden Submarine I-52! Preventing those 2.2 tons of gold from reaching the Axis must have been a game-changer. What part of this mission blew your mind the most?*
Another example of 20mm Oerlikons proving incapable of the range and hitting power needed to bring down WWII naval aircraft, or damaging a Type VIII or higher class U-boat. Also, another example of how critical codebreaking and using Turing's machine (computer) to crack Enigma's logic would be to winning the War in the North Atlantic.
True but there was a strong deterrent effect. For the U-boats, later-War boats had their anti-aircraft weaponry replaced or supplemented by the 37mm auto cannon (it turned out to be a pretty poor weapon but one hit by a 37mm shell on an attacking aircraft was very likely to be a kill-shot. Things were slightly different on surface ships dealing with U-boats; once a damaged U-boat was on the surface (unable to dive again), it's main point of danger was it's deck gun, generally an 88mm cannon derived from the famous 88mm anti-aircraft gun or it's 105mm successor. To defend from this danger, a destroyer or other Allied vessel would throw everything that they had to keep the U-boats "deck cleared". A 20mm fastfiring cannon could apply a lot of firepower -- even a few .50 caliber machine guns could put a lot of lead downrange fast. There was a lot of destructive damage to U-boats done by 5-inch guns on destroyers and similar escort vessels but for the purposes of keeping a submarine on the surface from becoming a threat, a smaller gun throwing a large number of projectiles did great work.
Yea, I would like to know that too, Has any of that gold been recovered ?? 2.2 tons of gold in 2024 going on 2025 value is one hell of a lot, I haven't done the Math, but a troy oz is 32 grams, a bit more than a standard oz of 28.35 grams, I believe gold is currently around $2500.00 U.S. per troy oz, the value of 2.2 tons of gold boggles my mind !! I'm not a mathmagician and just wondering if Anyone out there is capable of figuring out without googling it, what 2.2 tons of gold is worth, at $2500.00 U.S. per troy oz ????? Anyone ????? Please, lay it on us !! I'm sure that I wasn't the only one who wonders the value in today's dollars, when hearing it is or was at the bottom of the Atlantic, Who's the mathmagician who has the answers ??
Maybe someone can tell me why exactly every single world war II documentary has to start with Pearl harbor. Can those of us that are a little bit advanced in other words those of us that are currently studying world war II with an interest possibly be able to watch 10 to 20 minutes worth of content that reflects the title without 10 to 15 minutes of history class.
Because you are a minority of viewers. For too many, these segments replace the history class they slept through in high school. It may be late, but at least people are learning!!
Most documentaries are made by American producers and cover from when the US got involved which Pearl Harbor was the catalyst for. Up until that point the Axis was winning in all theaters. Thing is most documentaries only really cover what happened in Europe and a bit of Africa very few cover the pacific and Asia and fewer still cover the falling out that happened between the German National Socialists and the United Socialist Soviet Republic over who would be wearing the big pants and control what.
@@alexwood5425 true. My point being let's say we were going to write a story about the crew of the Memphis Belle. Should that video start with an introduction to the crew and then get into the story? Or should I start with Boeing and the creation of the B-17?
I do enjoy the little known stories that are shared in the "Dark" channels. Unfortunately, I find myself disappointed every time on every channel with their decision to randomly run imagery in the background that is inaccurate to their story lines. I understand appropriately substituting a gerneric ships crew when mentioning a specific one, etc, but other aspects end up being blatant misinformation, which is incongruous with history. For example, mentioning a Hellcat and showing an Avenger, mentioning an Avenger and showing a Dauntless. The Dauntless footage does not belong as it is never mentioned as ships compliment. They possess multiple Hellcat and Avenger clips as they are shown through out. Is it that hard to say Hellcat and show Hellcat? Most of the other channels that operate with random visuals are dubious AI voiced overdubs that present questionable information from questionable sources. So, "Dark" series, can you please clean up this part of your act? Your stories are great but your visual misinformations are annoying.
I think they would sink it versus getting into a battle with it. Remember how vast the area involved is, then imagine the split second decisions of the commanders on either side. The target was in sight. It posed a real threat to the Naval assets. Man and machine versus a deadly U Boat filled with whatever they carry on board in their cargo hold. The actions of the US commanders likely saved hundreds of lives and prevented a massive military payment to a foreign power that we were at war with from happening. 120 bars of gold would have been turned into weapons of war. I am glad that they stopped that from happening.
@ Jon, its called.. act like we put it in, and sank the sub.. all while we have it back at our secret spot.. its a simple slight of hand.. why would anyone get rid of treasure, when they could just say its in the sub, sink the sub. WHO can verify, on the bottom of the ocean, the gold is still there? Get it?
@@tombo7719 This is good to bring up as a question. I have no knowledge of this mission outside of what is presented. This is a great mystery. I think (or hope) that if the sinking is true, there will be side scanning sonar remote operated vehicles on survey missions searching for the location. There are instances of successful U boat captures. Not common, but true, and many things were found on captured U boats. This whole discussion is important. Your words are appreciated.
@@tombo7719 Clearly only the salvage team can confirm or deny finding the wreck and report their findings. Fun topic. tombo7719 keep writing, back it up with facts, and you will do fine.
Very good documentary,,, Interresting the relationship between Japan and Germany,,,and the American Activities in the Pacific... Thankyou 😊

Bogue may have been a pocket flat top but by God she punched way above her weight
Ya just like my wife😂😅😢
The Pacific in WW-II is famous for Carrier based operations, but this puts a spotlight on Carrier use in the Atlantic. Thanks!
That lady should have become a static display and museum
Great video!
Annother no b/s video Dark with relevant shots keep it up
Well other than the torpedos running on the surface while talking about a depth charge attack.
Let's go get that gold, boys!!!

Hold my Snow beer. Say’s the illegal Chinese salvage crew.

Gotta say Bogue did the allies and American proud.
Thank you.

Based on the research done by Polish mathematicians and given to the British.
It was a JAPANESE submarine using JAPANESE code, a code cracked by the US Navy.
Acoustic listening men must’ve loved depth charges 🤯

God Bless the brave American servicemen.
Would that be the same God that blesses the Japanese and the Germans?

Alleged god
@@johnoneill5661 you think German and Japanese veterans feel their war plans were blessed?.
I thought the U-Boat menace was pretty much squashed by May of 1944?!
For the most part, it was. There where still some Rouge subs out there that wanted to make a name for themselves.
They attacked my home town area of Westerly, RI in May of 1945.
It was the last U-boat sinking, (capt was young and wanted Iron Cross.

You can almost be certain that someone got the gold. Nobody is admitting to this. Lol 😆 Just my 2cents.
I'm attempting to, mon cheri...but it's a tough call with only water-wings and a torch...a...flashlight.
Id like to hear more about how we got the intelligence on i52s movements
