    Another tip for improving reticle focus:
    If the reticle is not mechanically centered relative to the lenses within the scope, this will introduce a slight blurriness or distortion to the reticle. It can be so minor as to be almost imperceptible. HOWEVER, if you are a stickler for small details, you can use the following procedure to ensure the reticle starts off from a perfectly centered position in the scope prior to zeroing it at the range.
    1) Find a mirror, preferably a hand mirror.
    2) Place the mirror flat on a table.
    3) Place your scope vertically on the mirror so the objective end (the end of the scope furthest from you when mounted on your rifle) is resting on the mirror. Keep a hand on it so it's stable and doesn't fall over.
    4) At equal intervals around the edge of the scope resting on the mirror place some coins to slightly lift it up off the mirror's surface. This will allow a little bit of light to leak in so the image you're about to look at isn't black.
    5) Look through the scope.
    6) If your reticle isn't already perfectly centered you will see two reticles; one is the reticle inside of the scope, the other is a mirror image reflection.
    7) Adjust your windage and elevation knobs to move the reticle inside the scope until it and the mirror image align with one another so you see only a single reticle.
    8) Remove your scope from the mirror and - following your scope manufacturer's instructions - rezero your windage and elevation knobs.
    9) You now have a mechanically centered reticle. Proceed to refocus with the eyepiece as per the instructions given in this video.

    I swear I learn something new about shooting every day despite having several years under me. Now I have an idea why my eyes feel so exhausted when target shooting for any extended length of time.

    is the picture on the background need to be clear or are we talking about just the reticle lines need to be clear ? Also, what power range do you set it on for focus?

    I use reading glasses to see up close. When I go to focus the retical on my scope should do it with my reading glasses on or off. I noticed if I fo
    cus it without my glasses anybody that looks through my scope that does not use glasses will see the reticle as just a blur.

    • @colb3590
      @colb3590 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Each person using the scope should refocus the reticle to suit their own eyesight.

    • @JohnDoe-zl6qw
      @JohnDoe-zl6qw 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Focus the reticle according to what you will do in the field. If you shoot with glasses on, then focus the reticle with your glasses on. If you shoot without your glasses, then focus the reticle without your glasses.
      If you focus the reticle with your glasses on, then the reticle will appear fuzzy to anyone else who looks through your scope unless they, too, are wearing glasses with the same degree of correction as yours.
      Remember, you're focusing the reticle to *your* eye because it is *your* scope on *your* firearm. Don't let someone else mess with your reticle focus unless you want to reset it every time you get your gun back after having lent it to someone.

  • @briantrent1155
    @briantrent1155 ปีที่แล้ว

    For me everything is a little fuzzy past 10 yards. I wear corrective glasses. My question is should i set up my scope focus with or without my glasses? Also what zoom should you set the focus on or does it matter?

      I adjust my diopter without my glasses on, then it's a simple paralax adjustment as needed. Works for me but I've always wondered if it works for anyone else.

  • @paulm.6966
    @paulm.6966 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Does it matter what power your scope is set at?

  • @davidmaco1
    @davidmaco1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    so once you do that you leave it alone ?? even when you change the parelex?

    • @JohnDoe-zl6qw
      @JohnDoe-zl6qw 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, you leave it alone. Set it and forget it.
      The eyepiece focus is now set to *your* eye; don't let someone who borrows your gun mess with the eyepiece focus. The slightly out-of-focus reticle they may experience for the brief time they borrow your firearm is a minor inconvenience compared to you having to refocus the reticle should they put it out of focus for your eyes. The only reason for changing it is if your eyes change, such as happens with age or with injury.
      The parallax focus affects the image transmitted from the objective lens through the scope and to your eye, it does not affect the focus of the reticle. The eyepiece focus and the parallax focus affect two different aspects of the image.
