- When 27-year-old Robert Mitchum was introduced as “Bob Mitchum” in his first starring role, Zane Grey’s NEVADA in 1944, a Hollywood Star was born.
In 1943 Mitchum appeared in 20 movies, beginning with his first credited role, a very small part as a gang member in HOPPY SERVES A WRIT (available to see in 4K in our A WORD ON WESTERNS Hopalong Cassidy Playlist). Mitchum went on to make an additional 6 Hopalong Cassidy movies, working his way up from “henchman” and ending up with a sizable role as a good guy.
Robert Mitchum was spotted in the Hoppy movies by RKO and tapped to take over Tim Holt’s B western series when Holt joined the army. Joining Mitchum in the launch of a new series was Holt’s regular sidekick, Richard Martin as Chito. Maybe because Mitch was still untried as a lead, a second sidekick was added, Guinn “Big Boy” Williams as Dusty. The leading lady was beautiful Anne Jeffreys who had just finished a series of B westerns with Wild Bill Elliott. Anne arrives on a runaway wagon of women and is helped by Mitchum. The pace is fast as Mitch wins big from a crooked gambler and gets falsely accused of murder. Soon he and his two saddle pals are on the run. NEVADA delivers lots of fast riding, shootin’ and laughs. I noticed Fred Graham doubling bad guy Harry Woods in a fight with Mitchum. Like most of the Tim Holt westerns, NEVADA is beautifully shot in Lone Pine and the nearby Alabama Hills.
Ben Johnson was the stunt double for Robert Mitchum in this film. His career would soon be on the rise as well. Ben would later receive a Best Supporting Academy Award for his work in THE LAST PICTURE SHOW. It's a prize that Mitch never received for his film work...although he certainly deserved one.
Of course, it’s Robert Mitchum that makes this such a watchable B western. Even at this early stage in his career, he’s so relaxed and natural in the role that it’s too bad he only made one more B western, WEST OF THE PECOS, before graduating to A movies and a long and successful career as one of Hollywood’s true legends.

Mitchum sure could hold the screen. A natural, right from the start. He had a very unusual voice too, very distinctive. He was always fun to watch, making everything he was in better.
Venice Beach here.🏄♂️ Just GREAT!💯 I've got all his movies, even the Hopalong ones!🤠🐎 Use to go camp Lone Pine AND BIG Pine as a kid AND took my kids as well!💙 Hiked Mt. Whitney as a teen!💪 I have Mr. Mitchum's autobiography, Everyone should read it; how he "Hobo-ed" on trains with his brother John!🥳 RIP.🙏
Rob: Thanks for continuing to remind us of those gems of the past. Not just the movies, but of the many TV shows that most either forgot, or maybe never knew of them. They might be make-believe, but their message shouldn't be forgotten, and might be even more important today.
Thanks, Henry. I totally agree with you.
Howdy everyone- hope you are fine and dandy this Friday night!! Thanks so much Rob & crew🎉

Rob I Have the Zane Grey novel "Nevada" ... a sweeping western covering California and Arizona following a wild horse rancher and his best friend Jim Lacy who killed some ruslers for his boss and best pal and ran then comming out of hiding working for a Judge on his ranch as Nevada...great book
Thanks, Ron. I haven't read the book but Paramount bought the rights to many of the Zane Grey novels and, it seemed to me, that they often just used the titles and wrote original screenplays.
@AWordonWesterns right old pal...only the Names in movie are the same as book...Marvie the kid, Ben I'd the dad...but Jim Lacy was similar in skill with his guns
Pluss I still have the book "Nevada" printed in 1945...I still read every now and then...the book was copy righted 1926...a great story...
The book is by Zane Grey almost 100 years old...a story about two wild horse hunters...and best friends
love this man!

@@kurtkensson2059 Why, I oughta...
That one guy who settled the selling of the claim sounded a bit like the Lone Ranger.
The director was he added two sidekicks, one played with John Wayne which was great series and the other with Randolph Scott
The Comstock assay was performed in San Francisco, not Carson City. The dude went to SF precisely to hide the assay result. After he got it, he RACED back to Nevada to get as many claim fractions as possible. Ol' man Comstock cashed out for $10,000. The mine produced millions of $$.
His first
Lone Pine is in California on 395. Odd that this is called Nevada.
Something just off with the picture, has it been run through an AI program 🤔🤔
Otherwise a good movie
MacGyver Flat
Very corny ending otherwise not a bad movie
Disappointing , in that it is nothing like the book, which was one of Z. Greys best.
what fool moved the Alabama Mountains to California
@@seymourwrasse3321 LOL 😂
They wanted to be in the movies..
Why, Mountain Van Lines, of course.
