  • FRONTIER MARSHAL, the first authorized film version of Wyatt Earp, and the legendary gunfight at the O.K. Corral, stars Randolph Scott as Wyatt Earp and Cesar Romero as Doc Holliday.
The 1939 western movie is based on Stuart N. Lake’s book, WYATT EARP, FRONTIER MARSHAL, published in 1931. Lake had spent time interviewing Earp, and his book created the legend that we know today. Not only was Lake's biography the basis for FRONTIER MARSHAL (1939) starring Randolph Scott, but the book has also been used for subsequent films about the peacemaker, including John Ford’s remake, MY DARLING CLEMENTINE (1946), and later GUNFIGHT AT THE O.K. CORRAL (1957), TOMBSTONE (1993), WYATT EARP (1994) and the Hugh O’Brian TV series, THE LIFE AND LEGEND OF WYATT EARP, done in 1955, which had the still living Stuart Lake as a consultant.
Randolph Scott makes a pretty good Wyatt, and there are those who think that Cesar Romero’s Doc (“Halliday” in this film, and a surgeon, not a dentist?) was even better than Victor Mature in MY DARLING CLEMENTINE. I always find it interesting to compare remakes, and the Ford/Dwan comparison is a doozy. At 71 minutes, FRONTIER MARSHAL moves right along as director Allan Dwan was not given the running time, or budget, that Ford was able to spend on atmosphere, locations, and deeper characterizations.
Actor Ward Bond is in both versions. In FRONTIER MARSHAL and, seven years later, MY DARLING CLEMENTINE. Bond is the ineffective town Marshal in this one and Morgan Earp in the later version, which delves more deeply into family bonds and the rivalry between the Earps and Clantons. Actor Charlie Stevens, falsely publicized for years as the grandson of Geronimo, has the role of “Indian Charley” in both versions and in RKO’s “Tombstone: The Town Too Tough to Die” with Richard Dix. I can’t deny that Ford was very influenced by this film. It has many of the same inaccuracies.
The rest of the cast lifts this version to A-movie status, even without the magnificent Monument Valley landscape. Binnie Barnes is Doc’s prostitute girlfriend and much less childish than Linda Darnell was in the Ford version. Alan Mowbray’s Shakespearean actor is missing, but instead, we have Eddie Foy Jr. portraying his real-life father as a traveling entertainer and Nancy Kelly as Sarah Allen.
The trio of bad guys in FRONTIER MARSHALL are a special gang of villains. There's John Carradine who runs things as a saloon owner, Lon Chaney, Jr. who has a run-in with Doc, and Joe Sawyer as Curly Bill. You’ll spot a familiar array of western veterans like Chris-Pin Martin (who had been Cisco Kid’s sidekick to Cesar Romero’s Cisco), Richard Alexander, Edward Norris, Hank Bell, Si Jenks, and former B western leading man Tom Tyler.
While most of the film takes place in the town of Tombstone, at night, there are several sequences shot at…you guessed it, the Alabama Hills of Lone Pine, CA.
In 1931 a film based on a fictional novel about Earp’s exploits by W.R. Burnett, with a script by a young John Huston, was made starring Walter Huston and Harry Carey Sr called LAW AND ORDER. However, that film did not use the Earp or Holiday names, which makes FRONTIER MARSHAL the first to showcase their fame. There is action and quite a few laughs in store for you. There have been many variations on film of Wyatt Earp and let’s hope there will be more quality movies depicting his exploits in years to come. Enjoy FRONTIER MARSHAL. Thanks for watching.

I grew up on these wonderful westerns. They made made me happy and adventurous. Caesar Romero was the smoothest and best looking dude in the movies back then - not to mention one of the best actors by far. These old classics were so well crafted and realistic that special effects were unnecessary. They were literally spellbinding and there was virtually no such thing as a "flop". ALL those old black and whites were literally works of art created by true Masters of the craft. 🙂

Discovered Randolph Scott about 5 years ago. Really like his movies. I liked that a lot of them were shot in color. I love black and white but really old movies shot in technicolor like Jessie James (1939) with Tyrone Power are a lot of fun. I haven't seen this one yet but my favorite version of this story (so far) is My Darling Clementine with Henry Fonda. Thanks for posting! (nice job on the up-convert ; )

Including Spaghetti westerns. Personally they are hard for me to watch or like. I really do not get, how good ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST, is so good or a step above or why it's so liked!? Like the actors but never liked the genre at all. What's your thoughts on those, "westerns"?

“Frontier Marshal” told a fictionalized version of the OK corral but it is a highly satisfactory movie because every person was given justice according to what he actually did in history. The actors were great! Hollywood spent the Great Depression era money carefully and worked diligently to spare the feelings of the relatives of the people in Tombstone.

Nancy Kelly and Binnie Barnes are beautiful. The supporting cast was great. To me the most dramatic part was the operation on little Pablo. Eddie Foy Jr was fun comic relief. (Did he have a whole career playing his father?) I notice that you mention several of the films about the gunfight at the O. K. Corral, but that you overlooked "Doc" with Stacy Keach.

Boy I've seen some fictionalized Wyatt Earp movies before, like Gunfight at the OK Corral with Burt Lancaster, My Darling Clementine with Henry Fonda, Hour of the Gun with James Garner. But I believe that this one takes the cake. This one didn't even try to find out what the history was or anything about it. The only names they used that were real were Wyatt Earp and Doc HAliday. And then they got Doc's last name wrong. I have no idea why. It wasn't until Kevin Costner and Kurt Russel came along that anyone ever really tried to write the true story and I understand that some of the things in those movies were wrong. But they tried. This one didn't even try. But it was still a good movie if you are not a history purist. Just good Western fun. Good movie, just not historically.

The Unvercity of Arizona's History Department after Stuart Lake died called his Wyatt Earp approved bio a Tall Tale & sold to the students Josie's account as true. In 1999 U. of A. had to change their tune when threatened with a lawsuit because the Earp Family still had all Virgil's & the Sisters & Relatives letters. They still refuse to acknowlege Lakes version as Fact. I spent a month reading Wyatt Earp Fountier Marshal & Fact Checking all the stories & even though Lake was enamored by Wyatt Earp I couldn't find a lie in it.. Virgil first went to Prescott as an Undercover U.S. Marshal to break up a Gang there & I suspect Wyatt did the same although he was a buinessman too, so that part is hard to say. If someone would research the U.S. Marshall archieves hard telling what we would learn..

"My Darling Clementine", is another fun film, if you can ignore the fact that the story has no basis in fact, and history has been totally obliterated. Henry Fonda was such a fine actor, and was really good in that, he deserved better than that mash-up of history, just as R. Scott and C. Romero deserved better than this mess.

I don't particularly like this version of what happened to doc Holliday when everybody knows that he didn't die the way they said in the movie otherwise why would Virgil and Morgan and the rest of Wyatt family have said to die in the okay corral other than that it was a good fictional movie although the ending completely messed up the real ending of such a great frontier family

This is one of those films where all the names should be changed, and any historical references, removed. Then, I could enjoy it. Authenticity and historical acuracy has been totally shredded. To attach the of beloved historical figures to this mess is a shame, especially since the main actors are quite good in their roles ; it just has almost nothing to do with reality. I am a true fan of Scott and Romero. Their fine talent was wasted in, what could have been a nice film. Just don't try to tell me, this has anything to do with true history.

Nota 7.

It would be nice to finish the Wyatt Earp movie. But it stopped just when it was getting interesting. Can you fix it? Before I turn 90, literally.

Good film, but scant grip on history. Randolph Scott and Cesar Romero were a pretty decent Wyatt and Doc.

When the true story is far more interesting, why not just make up a bunch of claptrap? Not badly done tho.

This is about as removed from the book as you could possibly get. Im glad Wyatt Earp never saw this, he would have shot the producer, the writer , and the director. They certainly did a disservice to the truth.

This was the most inaccurate version of Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday ever written. The only thing close to being accurate were the names. The rest was a total disaster!! Not a bad movie, but if it had a good Writer that actually knew at least a little about the real life characters, it would have been better. Some parts were laughable they were so bad!!
