11:58 into the build is awesome. My absolute 2 favorite youtubers... Mr. Diresta himself and Mr. Handtool Rescue.. great build Jimmy. The canoe is Amazing
@@mmercier0921 Michael, in the years before the miracle of epoxy canoes were built with canvas set in a coat of wet paint, then the exterior was also painted. As you've stated some of these canoes are well over 100 years of age and still water tight.
This is awesome. Made me a little emotional. I built two canvas canoes in 1975. Junior high school shop class. That was a 1 semester option class my teacher requested I take 4 semesters. I built a wooden canoe the following year for my teacher. His brought back so much of that joy. I can relate to your love of creation. Also enjoy "making fun" I think the name is. I am sure you will get hours of enjoyment from the most beautiful canoe I've ever seen. I am curious about one thing, what is the final weight of your canoe? Thanks Jimmy.
Don't know about this one, but on the website of the Langford canoe brand, you may see several models with specs. Expect 60lbs for a 15' long wooden canoe. Traditionnal indian canoe with birch bark over wooden frame were lighter. Less than 30lbs. Enjoy your sailing on your dingy !
I have to say... I've been waiting for some sort of boat building from Jimmy for quite some time, without even realizing it.. It's a culmination and amalgamation of woodworking skills (and clamp collecting) I've built a small plywood sailboat.. some sort of strip built boat has been on my mind for a while... Also I was thoroughly amused by the use of the wallpaper removal steamer for steaming the stem pieces ( just bought one a few months ago for removing wallpaper from a bathroom, now I have another use for it ) Thanks Jimmy, it's a fabulous bit of inspiration

Step 1: Build a giant CNC... In all seriousness though, yet another example of the incredible craftsmanship that has made "DiResta" a brand. Should be viewed by every kid in every shop class everywhere. One note though: The plans left out one detail. The portage yoke should have a circular cutout in it. When positioned properly, that cutout goes on the back of your neck for one-man portage. A minor issue, no doubt, but I post this in the interest of maintaining tradition.
I don't watch a lot of 30 minute long TH-cam videos. But I sat still and watched this one very intently. It was really cool to see you do such a big involved project. The cloth appears to be fiberglass cloth, not sure which weight. Some folks use different cloths like kevlar for the bottom, all kinds of fun new materials out there, carbon fiber as well.
I've never used a canoe where I didn't occasionally scrape it over rocks in a low spot in the river. I'd feel terrible scratching up a beautiful canoe like this - and would it tear the membrane and maybe let water in?
Whilst it would likely scrape and scratch, the combination of resin and fibreglass sheet is pretty damn solid and since the resin soaks into both wood and fibreglass, there is nothing to tear. Should the fibreglass layer wear down or get damaged to the point where the wood is exposed, it can simply be repaired by cleaning up the area and reapplying fibreglass and resin.

Not a canoe guy, or a boating guy in general, so I have to ask since it's the only part of this project I don't get. The notches cut in the top rail, are they there to make the wood easier to bend against the side of the canoe's curve, or are they there to help drain water that might get in the canoe when it's turned over for storage and transport so that it doesn't stand on the inside of the lip with no place to go?

There is no such thing as too many clamps
The clamps are homemade
Not a canoe guy, or a boating guy in general, so I have to ask since it's the only part of this project I don't get. The notches cut in the top rail, are they there to make the wood easier to bend against the side of the canoe's curve, or are they there to help drain water that might get in the canoe when it's turned over for storage and transport so that it doesn't stand on the inside of the lip with no place to go?
Drain water and the also provides a place to lash gear down.
(russian) Вау!!!!!!!!! Такое длинное видео (34 минуты), но я его досмотрела до победного конца и очень красивая торжественная концовка. Я восхищена - спасибо за такое уникальное видео!
This dude is really into himself.. Hes got his name on everything.
you must be new
@@jaswats9645 I am, that was my first impression and like they say first impressions are everything.. It don't take away from the end result of his work as he is clearly very talented but it is definitely corny and off putting.
@@DeathlessKY I know it seems that way, and I thought so too, about 380 vids ago. But Jimmy replied to my same question years ago, where he stated that if he didn't promote himself, who would? Clearly, in his case, he's 100% correct. He's easily one of the most generous, unpretentious, well known and well respected makers on the internet. And if you keep watching, you'll see why.
If I built such an awesome piece and had this much talent ur damn right I’d put my name all over it too! He deserves that!!!
This is an impressive work! Congratulations Jimmy. Yours is a masterpiece.
Thanks for the new tools with technology and your amazing experience, you did good and great job.God bless you.
Proper job!
Nothing quite so simple and elegant as a cedar strip canoe.

Paddling the Diresta Canoe and holding Alec Steele's Viking sword in the other hand. what else do we need in life then? lol
Maybe a brass compass from new Zealand
@@pollauritsabrahamsenjq1618 why from New Zealand?
@@blargkliggle1121 clickspring is from new Zealand. You should see his videos
@@pollauritsabrahamsenjq1618 I love clickspring, I've learned so much from him. Personally, I feel that anyone who wants to improve with filing should watch his how-to's. Just last month I made a rat tail file using his videos and a little trial and error. It works almost as well as a modern file, and nothing beats the feeling of working with a tool you made yourself.
You have the patience Job. Amazing work.
Mr Diresta, I think I just witnissed a true MASTER of skill. Jack aus

forgot the canoe.. I love the workshop space! yeah ok the canoe is nice too.
TURD!!!!
Какой фирмы были ЧПУ у индейцев?
Тут только форма от каноэ.
@yewdagumhorse ОБХСС OBHSS
best canoe yet. Inside looks sturdy
