At first, this is true. But as time goes on, it balances out. Mage is fun to play, but many people get burned out quickly with them and re roll to something else. As is the case with most classes, tbh. Once people start hitting 60, you will see less mages and more of every other class.
Still waiting to see more lv 60 palas on my server. With 9 in total we are the smallest part on our server in the 60 bracket and the next is just lv 43.
Cam E this is even more relevant come phase 2, because pvp isn’t “balanced” it’s Rock Paper Scissors it’s only going to take a few BGs before someone playing a mage gets rocked by a lock, shadow priest or a good rogue then reroll. I’m going the whole 9 yards with my mage

Quality content. Not only for the research, but many don't even make the effort to prepare "text" for the video. Instead it becomes like a livestream, where they have to remember the points to talk about, which ends up in an insane amount of "uhm".
Really like your well structured "article"-videos. Informative, entertaining and doesn't have that high-pitched voice some have.

Hey, thanks - I feel like a vid like this HAS to be scripted. If i tried to just do this off the cuff I would umm and err and miss so much out.
Honestly wasn't inspired by any current vids out there. I was already interested in making videos and wanted to try a series.
Also I was having trouble picking my class too! So it helped me a lot there from learning everything I have.

Can only agree with that, most videos are random pictures or videos with people talking, like later (or latest?) UncleDane videos. But not Willies videos. They are pure gold with the recordings from the game matching what he talks about. Such videos are the ones you remember for a long long time and rewatch once per year of half a year.

Oh the ez days before diminished returns. Every 2v1 was a 1v1 as you could force sheep someone forever. Sitting in the water near a boat . Someone would always jump to you trying to kill you only to be poly'd. Poly would make them b-line to the bottom of the sea and if you kept them morphed until they ran out of air they would die before reaching the surface. Some good times for sure.
Warlocks perma fear or succubus seduce you instantly out the game also nice
There are DRs in classic. after 3 you become immune, however they do last longer in classic then on retail for sure

For ppl that hate lvling(me) that's really good, i queue for dungeons untill i get lvl 91, then if timewalking is here, i do timewalking, if not, just quests, when i Reach 98/99 i go legion, do class hall, all spec artifact weapon, then just do stormheim+highmountain, side quests, then do some more quests, ill be lvl 108-109, depends. Then just do dungeons, some side quests, and then 110,

Then just all zones, by half of my last zone, i would be 120.

When I played vanilla, there were 2 rules to every dungeon run. Warrior tank, and mage for AOE and CC sheep, almost without exception. The lack of reliable CC and aoe on any other class was such a big deal that most refused to run dungeons without a mage. Sheep is 100% safe and can be recast throughout a fight unlike most other vanilla CC. It really shouldn't be underestimated how fundamental mage AOE was to so many encounters too, spamable powerful aoe was so rare in Vanilla that mage aoe was seen as a requirement in many fights, especially how strong frost slows could be. Mage will always be a casters best friend for the free water, very time consuming without the summonable table of TBC so make sure to make plenty before the raid starts.

Definitely all good in some ways. Doesn't shy away from answering "No, not really" for certain specs though, Mostly the poor Hybrid Tax classes ;-;.
They are all good and efficenct at things others can't do. I have 2 60s and 3 120s
I look at these comments and see zero players.
Imo it's pretty hard to find anything good about Druids exept for Innervate and maybe their ability to remove curses.
They should be able to tank (even in raids), but it's incredibly difficult to pull off (has been done on private servers).

In vanilla days, affliction warlocks kicked my ass in 1v1 duels. I faired a little better in open world / BG pvp. Nothing had the mobility of a mage, and in battle grounds, you could just stand back and own the place. Once you had a little gear and the proper frost spec, no other class could remotely touch you. You could kite rogues and warriors all day long while playing hunter's dead zone. One of my favorite videos that I made back in the day was of two rogues who got the drop on me in open world pvp. They stayed close enough together that all my freezes and slows caught both of them. Some say their bodies are still in the middle of the Silithis desert.
I think soul link/ siphon life locks were God's. cant remember if that was BC though.

As a lock I always felt a love hate relationship with mages, like brothers who gave each other shit and argued over gear but put aside their differences when shit got tough.

@@WillEmmo Hey man! Really love your videos :). I'm also from the RS side - this question may be a bit stupid, but is there any class that's somewhat close to a RS character? Not so much in being able to do everything, but more so... being a main? Like, having many tools at your disposal. I'd hate to roll a class and being locked out of a lot of stuff. Mages seem a good option, with the conjuring/tping etc. But is there any other class out there that's even better? I just really crave for a class that's worth playing on as a main :)

Mages are next to Warrior in terms of late game power and viability but with a much better leveling experience which is very important. There will be loads of them, the safer bet is to go for a less popular class that provides utility.
Mages, the proof that hybrid tax, rock paper scissors design, and give and take are MYTHS in vanilla.
"Your class/spec shouldn't do as much damage because of the utility"
Mages bring food, water, one of the best caster buffs, DECURSE. Why do they also get to deal all that extra damage with that utility again?
"That's a PVP spec, don't expect it to do well in pve. You can't be good at everything"
Mages have easy access to pvp and pve without much change in their spec and give up nothing. Tell me again why my spec is broken and not complete?
Mages excel at every aspect of the game at nearly all times, providing themselves the best of all the casters. Their lack of self healing is offset by their huge access to control in fights, allowing them to mitigate damage in ways far beyond any other class.
"Mages are good at everything therefore the hybrid tax doesnt exist". Except for healing and tanking, that's what's being taxed when people say "hybrid tax". Hybrid tax refers to the roles of class, which is dps, tank and healing
I first rolled a Warrior but I didn't like it as much and then I rolled a Mage and just loved it however I made a lot of mistakes with my builds in Classic and ended up trying out a LOT of different builds which was a mistake and ended up with Frost/Arc build that was excellent. I did build a POM Pyro and it was great in PVP but there is always scenarios where you never get what your after. I was constantly trying to get gear and never getting what I wanted and therefor that elusive one shot PVP never developed as well but I still had a blast in the open world and battleground PVP.
I know so much more about playing a mage now then I ever did in Vanilla that I am looking forward to Classic a lot.

I did the same exact thing when I first started playing wow. I had no Idea what I was doing so I just created the first thing that was on the screen which was a human warrior. I get a little bored from hitting and tried out a mage and fell in love with the spells lol. I think if I didn't create a mage I probably would have stopped back in vanilla.

I'm told that mages do not want Tier 1 and tier 2 sets at all and that crafted gear with mats from ZG is almost BiS. So my fellow mages will not be getting any competition for Tier gear from me, they can have it. assuming what I've been told is correct.
here is the gear you want for Phase 1 (molten core):
Head: Random head piece of frozen wrath. max 41 frost spell damage (FrSP)
Belt: Banthok Sash (hit is super rare in phase 1)
Wrist: Random green 21 FrSP wrist
Boots: Random green with 34 FrSP
Hands: Hands of Power
Molten core drops mages will want are the following: talisman of ephemeral power, Choker of the Fire Lord, robes of volatile power, ring of spellpower, mana igniting cord, mageblade, the rest can be ignored.
as soon as ZG comes out, you will be crafting the bloodvine set. Not sure about Naxx and AQ40 gear however, but I'm told that "talisman of ephemeral power" and "Choker of the Fire Lord" are good for the entire duration of the game, you never have to replace them.
Now, mind you, all of this can be horse rubbish. I've never played a mage in vanilla, which is why I want to try it, but I was told this by a guy that has played on one of those private servers for years so.
no that all sounds about right to me. Green lens is better on head slot with frost damage boost. Its rng though. Tailoring Robes of the Archmage are bis until zg.
After zg bloodvine is available which ia bis for basically every caster it has so much hit on.
3pc T1 with hat, bracers and gloves or boots is worth using. 96 frost only damage vrs 64 All spell damage (61 and 1 crit for boots) (you use AE and fire spells in raids to). You also get 57 +int which is another crit and alot of mana, ~38 stam (380 life), some spirit (scales Evocation), some resists, and +1 spell hit. T2 pants are also good and will probably be used over bloodvine if you have ZG enchant and good gear.

I remember being in Tanaris around level 48-50 doing my ZF runs for the 2nd sword to make the epic 2h Sword. I saw a level 60 Gnome mage SOLO 3 full health 60 Hordes. I was in aw. I wanted to reroll a mage so bad but didn’t want to dedicate 4 months to get him to 60.

Just to comment on your fire spec, you always take Pyroblast. With ignite and 6-10 mages in your raid, every mage can pre-cast a pyro, and then extend that ignite indefinitely for the rest of the fight, resulting in the highest damage possible from that debuff slot

You're gonna be as good as your skill allows you to. A very small percentage of gear items will make a difference, unlike today where gear is everything.

Mages are god tier in PvP. You got such a great toolkit available and can make your enemies wanna throw their keyboards through their screen. But. Mages are incredibly hard to master, much like rogues. If you wanna show your huge PvPness you better learn your stuff and get used to your screen turn grey every other minute. People will roll mages thinking they're gonna steam roll everything until they notice how difficult this class is.

Love my mage, but it wasn't the first class I leveled. I found the mage to be fairly squishy in classic, but that could have been due to my inexperience at the time. I think I could do better these days.
You know, I was a mage for my first character, not knowing better I felt everyone else was as squishy and I was in for a surprise once I tried out other classes, wouldn’t change the experience thou.
@@pedropierre9594 : Yeah, I learned to love my mage and I could probably play it better these days. But there was a huge difference. When I played a Pally I solo'd Hogger and Princess back then and again in the Classic stress test. Good times.

tl;dr video: Yes mage is the best class, you only need to click (or keybind) your 1 spell for pve, pvp you have a thousand spells to snare/cc/counter with instant or 1.5 sec timers, 2 shields and a money maker/personal utility : portal to every city. Blizzard just unloaded their hardon on this class
Didn't Shatter become really good in raids? As all mages could proc it, as well as everyone putting it up as well? I've only seen the Legacy of the Mage by MMO-champion's favorite Preach. Or was he talking about another freeze effect between mages? Cause I honestly find it kinda cool that mages synergized so well in Vanilla

I noticed you kept putting points into arcane explosion crit instead of increasing resistances via magic absorption talent. Is AE crit really better than resistance in pve?
Fair point, it does depend on what content you will be doing, Magic absorption goes way up in raids or pvp content, whilst Improved Arcane Explosion in Open World/ Dungeons. Even with 5/5 your resistances still aren't high to the point where you can reliably expect to resist spells - most of this will come from gear so I think AE will be a more consistent choice - then again its down to preference too.

A small criticism of the series. You ultimately conclude that almost every class "is one of the best" out there. I get the fuzziness of deciding which classes are best, but maybe a final video with your ranks from 1 to 9 is best? I know you said priest is #1 in another video
possibly yes, I gave reasoning for each class during the respective vids as to what makes them good. Paladin for example, holy is the go to spec, the other 2 dont do as well, and I concluded by saying palas are good ... because their buffs are good. Whereas with mage I have no problem saying they are good at everything.

If you have played all the classes in vanilla you would be in the same conclusion as right now. Ultimately it comes to what you want to do, PvP or PvE or little of both? Three of the classes that will never have problem getting gold is Rogues, Mages, Hunters so you will most probably have one of this classes as gold farmer. If you go for PvE you must decide on a role then you have the choice of Tanks (warriors, druids), Healers (Priest, Paladins, Druids, Shamans) or DPS (Rogue, Mage, Warlocks, Warriors, hunters) other classes can fill this roles in a niche circumstances.

@@braindeadpizzaslice9098 hahah yeah you could say that, very basic one. it was a part of a mage class quest. It had a portal trainer, mage trainer and reagents vendor.
I'm confused, Fire is a prime way of leveling for a mage. You could be a big Pyroblast/Fireball mage or a Scorch mage. Every mage has access to Frost Nova so it's not a big deal not to be a Frost mage as Fire does way more damage as well as the talents that increase your stun chance and fire damage.
I should have given it a mention for sure, I may end up making mage and pally vid. Just look at the duration compared to the others! Certainly some important points I missed when doing first few vids in series
If you want to level fast you go far enough into frost so your blizzard has a chance of rooting enemies, you then pull massive groups frost nova and then blizzard them down in safety kill any stragglers with AE, eat drink repeat.

Hi, first of all, thanks for the kind words! The first frost build I showed is best for raids. Open world or pvp the winters chill build is so much better. Gives you Shatter and defensive options

@@WhiteSupreme It is crazy how many people don't realize the game changed because it had to. You can't force people through 15 years of content at the same rate and expect anyone to stick around. But this is a wow classic video /channel and I don't think they can release a single video without throwing insults at retail wow. I am not sure if they even like classic wow or just hate retail at this point. Either way I know I enjoy both for different reasons and will be spending time in both.

The only time I was ever bummed about playing my mage due to changes was when Rune of Power or Invocation were required for competitive DPS during MoP, but I got over it quickly.
A good druid could line of sight, break CC, and steamroll most mages.

My theory is that a lot of people will roll mage but most will quit after lvl 25+ in a pvp server after getting their ass ganked by a rogue, druid or shaman. I played mage in vanilla and never knew a good mage on my server ( i rerolled a warlock because pkaying a mage with 200+ms ping was painful). The best players were always Shamans, Warlocks and rogues.
Until you get Ice Barrier, Cold Snap and Ice Block, mages are actual paper
maybe you didnt play in 1.12 then rofl because everyone knows mage is top tier pvp and pve but maybe not with 200ms

why is this croped in, isent this classic. it seems not as the mobs dont leeway you . if so how do you know how the mage plays in classic?? whit aoe and melee leeway and the wonky spellbatching..??
Cropping was my bad on the recording - I have fixed it in my recent videos. I didnt have access to the Closed Beta so i was unable to get footage exactly how it will be on Classic. However the points I make in the video are still relevant for the mage and reflect what it will be like even taking into account leeway and spell batching affecting your performance

Make many things more difficult like aoe grinding and esp pvp both in BG and open world. ivd studied it alot thats why i could see instant your footage wasent classic.
alsow the dmg scale diffrent mobs hit diffent dmg onto you ect ect. + the raid boss dont have +15 static amour like private severs. again so you dont know how that will be for raid whit diffrent +amours on raid bosses. i could go on and on. ithink you get it now
@@silverbulletin846 From what I hear its quite different compared to many pservers too. No pserver can be 100% like Classic as Blizzard have never released how everything works in detail, people have just made educated guesses.
Still I just enjoy learning and talking about Classic so even if i wasnt lucky enough to get beta access i want to make vids!
Frost is beast, arcane spec has its merits, fire mage is beast. I guess classes have versatility? Depends how you want to play, just like every class lol.

mage was one of the strongest classes in vanilla.. especially in pvp.

Another note:
Mages; especially frost; are also at a disadvantage in PvP against Shadowpriests during vanilla. Fortunately, Shadowpriests are very uncommon.
Yeah spriest and warlocks will walk all over a mage. A rogue with cooldowns still has a chance.
A good SPriest or Lock should never lose to any spec if played right, they beat everything. Now that's much harder said than done of course, so, lucky everyone isn't rank one level lock or priest.

Mages were and always will be a free kill for a resto druid. Hell, I'd intentionally hunt mages because I could sleep through the encounter and win every time regardless of their gear or spec.
Even now, leveling a resto druid in classic I'm repeatedly jumped by mages and I have a 100% success rate in world pvp against them. The last one was +4 levels higher and I went 4 for 4 against him.
You need to be a minimum of +6 levels for a resto to not stand a chance> But nder that ratio, and a mage is a free kill.

From my xp shammys are ur main threat , druids dont have the mana to shift out of all ur snares
@@marianboicuc4981 grounding totem to eat the pyro, earthshock to block the fire/frostbolt, purge off any shield and buffs then wtf windfury or pewpew chainlightning, healing if too low. Shammy will always terrify any caster.

@@cattysplat just play horde and don't worry about shamans being a problem. Paladins may take awhile to kill but mages destroy them utterly. Believe me I was rank 13 paladin and geared paladin raider.

Problem with mages was raiding. Frostbolt -> Frostbolt ............... 4 hours later starting to hate your life.

Shadow Priests made mages their bitches. Lots of instant cast shadow or non-shadow spells and that included silence and psychic scream.
