To subdivide an edge is to split it in half. When you subdivide a face, all sides of it are split in half and the vertices connected. It's a simple procedure, but one of the most common tools in computer graphics.
In this lesson, you'll also learn about the Fill, Grid Fill, Make Edge / Face, and Connect Vertex Path tools and when to use each of them.
We also talk about how it's possible to accidentally leave vertices directly on top of each other, which can cause all sorts of confusion. To remove duplicate vertices, use Merge by Distance.
Some important hotkeys to remember from this lesson are:
    F: Make Edge / Face
    J: Connect Vertex Path
    M: Merge menu

Really genuinely excellent stuff here! I'm approaching this with some really rusty experience in 3DS Max and Cinema 4D, and this is really filling in the knowledge gaps. Blender is genuinely amazing.

In Edit mode, that switches to Edge Select. 1 and 3 switch to Vertex and Face Select, respectively. They're hotkeys for the selection mode buttons on the left side of the 3D Viewport window header menu, .

Why am I unable to create a vertex if I start without the cube object? But only able to add the vertex after I remove all the vertices but a cube object remaining in the collection?

have same issue! can't create vertex without a cube and also mine creates cubes instead of vertex when I press ctrl+ r click

I figured it out: start with the cube > select and delete the vertex > then try to make your shape

I use subdivide so often that I have it mapped to my \ key.

We no longer want to learn subdivide, fill, and merge. When's AI coming to blender?

    • @Philosophy.and.Tostitos

I do want to subdivide, fill, and merge. I believe mastering your fundamentals will always be the most important step before you turn to any AI tools to make your workflow more efficient. :)

@@Philosophy.and.Tostitos - yeah, i gotcha, was just joking around. Truth is tho, rectangles (err, cuboid) and spheres/globs rendered will get you a long way with image prompt stuff

@@jeffg4686 Oh, haha, please don't mind me then, I was having an autistic moment 🤪 Also I didn't know that part about cubes/spheres and image prompts! There's always one more rabbithole to tumble down into, I guess. xD
