What kind of wood?

is the first cut for the start of the chevron just a 45 off the corner of any 1x4? Then you just use that cut, lined up on the "top" then cut down the center line?

Hmmm... I finally followed Ann's advice and took Stodoys. It's great for beginners and has some advanced stuff too.
