    Can I record drums directly into my interface without using a mixer or compressors? 0:55
    What is the point of using a mic with an acoustic guitar if you can just plug it into the front of the interface? 3:51
    What is the one piece of equipment that you couldn't live without? 6:41
    What is the best interface to use in a bedroom studio? 8:36
    I have a USB microphone, do I need an interface? Or can I just record with this? 11:11
    Side by Side with David of The Workday Release 13:13

      Hey Warren! :) have you heard of the Tone Dexter? It match eq's the piezo sound to a mic and it sounds amazing live and it is maybe something cool for live recording sessions too what do you think about this?... but i agree mics are still the best overall :) i personally mic my acousics always x/y with one mic pointing to the 12th fret and one towards the soundhole afterwards i eq both sides to be a bit mor similar and pleasing but i like this way of doing it :)

    Mr. Huart is absolutely right on this one. I have a ProTools HD rig running at 96k,
    I also have a Focusrite Scarlett USB interface, running at 44.1. I’ve used takes from both rigs in my final mixes. Not one person has ever noticed. They are equally useful and both sound fantastic. Thanks again Warren!

    Thanks Warren! Just to confirm what you were saying. I was at the AES show in NYC and spoke to Greg Ondo at Yamaha about my Steinberg UR44 interface. I was going to check out some of the analog pre amps available and wanted his opinion on how it would benefit me. His opinion was that I probably would not notice much of a difference. That saved me some bucks! I am just doing some recording at home. If I was a professional studio it would be a whole different scenario. Thanks again for keeping our head where it belongs with creativity and writing good music!

    Nice one about loud environments :). I live very close to an airforce base and have helicopters flying over my house all day. Here you are recording a nice little acoustic guitar and suddenly a chinook comes thundering 100 meters over your head. DI for me it is.
    Thanks again for your video Warren, greatly appreciated what you do!

    • @Stefan-
      @Stefan- 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ha ha, i can see why you might prefer DI. While there may be piezo systems that sounds better than others i personally generally hate the flat undynamic plasticy sound they often produce. That said the DI can probably be a nice addition to the mic sound when mixing to get an extra dimension and you can probably get the DI to sound alot better with clever use of reverb to make it sound less flat.
      BTW i dont own any acoustic with DI myself, but ive heard alot of recordings/albums where you easily can hear from "a mile away" that it is DI .

    My best acoustic guitar recordings (solo finger style) have been with a large diaphragm condenser in omni at the 12th fret, a small diaphragm condenser in omni on the lower bout, AND a DI from the pickup. Mics at left and right plus a little DI in the middle. Big full solo guitar sound. Thanks for all your encouragement.

    Another wonderful video with great answers to the FAQs. I will definitely get a look at that track.
    Do you often run into artists are, for lack of better wording, creativity impaired? I know fair few people who can play most anything you put in front of them but are not creative enough to make anything of their own.
    I will have to find that second video about not letting budget holding people back. I have a little recording gear but not much. This may change what I do next. I have been trying to save up for better instead of as agressively feeding a multiple instrument habit.

    To Warren and anyone else that has used affordable and expensive interfaces: how much of a difference is there? Would you be comfortable making a record with a top-selling band using, say, a 2nd Gen Focusrite Scarlett 2i4, or would the loss in quality be quite significant?

    • @hellohampton
      @hellohampton 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      MegaCrasherMusic Actually, I did watch the video and listened to that part twice, and it's what prompted the question. Perhaps I should have phrased the question better. While I appreciate the incredible quality of even cheap interfaces, I think it's established that there is still some sound quality increase as products go up the pricing ladder (of course). I was curious as to the amount of increase, especially with A/D conversion. Sorry if this was not clear.

    Great concept you have with the FF Warren!!! What about a concept : a short mixadvice you give to people on their own music/mixstuff, but more from one part of a mix question : For example: Help Warren, how do I get this kick more working with the bassguitar/ or my vocals are to muddy within the tracks,even with the vocal thicking trick, help, help?? Maybe call it : Warrens happy half hour (With positive critical 1 track stuff in a context to the rest of the instruments to improve...) Just an idea... (damn there are lots of ideas in the world/universe/multiverses,hahaha)

    • @drummerjeroensimons

      Ofcourse I can be critical and perfectionist, but thats about CARING for the outcome, art is about honesty man and when dealing with a team: knowing your place and that everybody cares for the outcome.... That level I love, I only love...:) Striving for better and better....That makes it all exciting and worth it...

    I love using my DI on my acoustic Yamaha. I always print it when I'm tracking. Most of the time I mix with both Microphone and DI and blend them together. It still sounds natural thanks to the mic, but the DI just gives it that bit extra...
    I sometimes even seperate the DI and MIC in the stereo field, gives you nice width in some occassions.

    I have found over the last 25 years , that the performance is the most important thing ... Not how you capture it . I can put up a 58 in front of an accomplished vocalist who knows their craft, and I get a great performance ... By The Same Token... I can put a nervous new band up on the most expensive Microphones , hiding behind the best pop shield on the planet or in the best location on the instrument ever documented ... And have a sub par recording or live show thats just not cutting it. Its easier to blame the gear , right...
    I have found that whilst gear is great , and we all love gear , its important but its not the thing that makes an album the worlds best ...
    Use what you can to capture the best stuff you can , and have a blast doing it ! . Thats when you know you have Won ! .

      @Producelikeapro  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

It was all up high and I caught the disaster shortly after hearing it explode, but the extraction dudes wanted to haphazard disassemble my “studio” set up having no idea how, randomly taking it upon themselves to yank plugs and wires and crush electronics keyboards and wires under other mike stands and wrought iron chairs etc heavier items. All after their supervisor telling them to leave that area to myself since I would be the one to do it the most expediently. While I carried one piece of equipment to the other room they simply couldn’t restrain themselves from wrecking things, unrelated to their own focus area (the floor). No cords were on the floor when I turned my back for a minute and a half! Seriously I already had everything set up on piers and beams by design and prior life experience All my cords were suspended from a canopy. Surge strips were three feet off the floor and actually unplugged right after I breakered the whole of everything off. Came back to find the doofuses basically force yanking cables, tangling and throwing them into the water. Ah! The frustration. I hope I can salvage things. I had a pretty decent sounding little setup. 72 hours into drying out and humidifying simultaneously. My acoustic is fine, and definitely soothing right now❣️I appreciate making small things work. Thanks! 🌻

    Here is a question:
    What's the difference between those workstations pcs/laptops to those 'cheap' ones?
    Does a cheap one laptop is ok to record/edit/mix ? Can it handle days of work?

    Can you go in depth the connecting of a analog 40 channel console to a focus rite 18i20? I know I will need more inputs and outputs, what would you suggest?
    I Love your channel

    • @demagmusic
      @demagmusic 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Depends a bit on your setup....
      For me, the first thing to connect would be your main busses/groups to 8 DAW inputs. (I'm assuming you have an 8-buss mixer). I'd probably route 8 DAW outs to 8 of the channels so I can mix "stems" in analog if desired.... leaving 32 channels for instruments/mics.
      After that, it really depends on the gear you have, and the way you like to work: Do you have a lot of outboard FX that you want to use as DAW sends/returns? Any external mic pres? Do you intend to use the mixer preamps or the Focusrite preamps? Do you want to mix partially in analog (like I mentioned with 8 stems above), or entirely in the DAW?
      Its really open ended, and there is no "right way". You need to find the "way that works for you"

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks ever so much Frank! I'm really glad you enjoy the Channel! So glad to be able to help! Damag nailed the answer! You are going to have to run additional IO's to get the use of all 40 Channels of your console. However most guys are summing a lot smaller than that these days! So maybe you could get away with 16 or 24 outputs depending on how you sum! I have a great Mark Endert video coming up where he talks about his summing! Check it out soon!

    Hi Warren, these FAQ videos are great! Nice addition to your videos. With regards to interfaces, would you ever say there is a place to crank the input volume on an interface and use that distorted sound for an electric guitar or is it best to record clean and add saturation, etc after the clean recording? I have a Focusrite Scarlett 2i4. Thanks again.

    Hi Warren, thanks for the video! This is a bit of a hypothetical question, but would "the quietest room in the world", (Orfield Labs in Minneapolis), be any good as a recording studio?
    Love your tips, they've helped me massively.

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's a great question! A quiet room would be great for recording from the perspective of bleed from the outside, however does that mean is it acoustically treated? Or just isolated from the outside?

    • @Ineverforgetspaces
      @Ineverforgetspaces 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for answering! It's isolated with double walls of insulated steel, and treated on the inside with fiberglass acoustic wedges, so I guess both?

      I don't, sadly. I just recently saw a video of someone spending an entire hour inside it, without any lights (there was a myth staying inside for longer than 45min would drive you crazy), and it got me thinking about the practical use of that room from a recording standpoint. Hi Warren, thank you so much for sharing this great content !!!
    Do you have some advice for mixing a blues rock album (reference: Keb Mo - Just like You)? I have basic knowledge in mixing (was mixing electronic music, pop, metal, orchestral...), this is my first project in this genre. I mean advice like: use classical lexicon reverbs or not, ssl based eqs, compressors or not, or are there any specific technics for mixing used in this genre?
    Thanks again for making this great work and help people like me to actually live my dream!

    • @ghostsnstuff960
      @ghostsnstuff960 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In case you take the time to read and answer, here is some more specification about this project: all instruments are real, from what I've heard nicely played, and average recorded. What I'm wondering after listening to keb mo, especially the newer album "suitcase" It sounds cleaned up, like everything is low-cuted (and maybe hi-cuted?) very accurately, but the analyzer shows a lot very low frequency content I think not only from kick and bass...what's the trick?

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question Ghostsnstuff! Yes, really well executed high passing, cleaning up low end rumble is essential for a fantastic mix! Subtle amounts of EQ and compression in that genre is very important! I would say letting the performances breath is on of the most important things you can do! Soft compression from an LA2a would be typical and gentle Neve style EQ are both things I would say would help tremendously!

    So, I've been working on my skills as a mixer for the past few years, and I'm confident enough in my mixing abilities to start getting paid! • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Great question!! Firstly, do you have all of you Social Media pages set up? FaceBook, TH-cam and of course Soundcloud, places where people can discover your work! In your local area is there any kind of music scene? If so get out and meet bands, offer to mix a song for free if you love the band! Show them what you can do! If they love it then you can charge them for more! Do the same for bands you find online, don't be afraid to reach out, you will get rejected we ALL do! However perseverance will pay off! Plus build a cool website! These days anyone can build them! There many templates available!

    Good afternoon what is the best compression rate for voice

    • @hellohampton
      @hellohampton 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Lazaro Santos I'm sure Warren's opinion is more educated, but I would say it GREATLY depends on both the vocalist and the song. That said, I usually don't track with greater than 4:1 ratio. Play with the threshold/input knob a bit and try to avoid getting a flat looking waveform (overcompression) or extreme transients (possibly undercompression on a dynamic vocalist). Let me know if this helps!

    my question is not only for warren, but for the whole community, i'd love to hear your thoughts.
    scarlett is really good, but i was thinking about getting a saffire pro 40, cuz i'd love to record my power trio's rehearsals and all, or record live, just mix after and put here on youtube. even thou saffire is older, has less latency (its firewire) and the tech specs seems to be better, more close to clarett range than the scarlett. *also i've seen many guys using clarett 8preX, and using the saffire octopre as adat and not the scarlett octo pre, that makes me think that perhaps the saffire's preamp is better. i'm trying to be careful and meticulous since is my first step into building my home studio, anyway, what u guys think?

    9:55 While it's true that electrically / hardware-wise, there's not much between all the 2-channel interfaces out there (and even their bigger brothers), one more noticeable differentiator is the quality of the software / drivers. For example, you likely won't be able to push the minimum latency as low on a Behringer or the like, as you could on an RME, etc. Software development costs money too, and there's only so much companies are willing to do / spend on the low-end of their product ranges.

    • @demagmusic
      @demagmusic 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @KhronX Very good point. Another difference between the cheaper stuff and more expensive gear is the quality of the gain stages. I find cheaper stuff tends to be hissy and have a higher background noise than the "pro" gear. This is accentuated when you need to crank the gain for a quiet source.

    ok be honest with me, anyone who has alot of experience with mics and used more than 100 mics, if i record a song and mix it and it comes on the radio or i play it for you in your studio, If i tell you that i used a U87 for the vocals or something would you straight up tell me "No You Didnt"... and if you answer yes you would, then take into consideration that i couldve actually recorded it on a U87 but i mixed it like shit where it sounded like crap to make you think its not a U87, not saying that i can take a usb mic and turn the sound into a U87, but High Quality MICROPHONES arent a necessity for anyone who is recording music in their bedroom an NT1-a is more than perfect cause at the end we are making music for the average listener...

    9:10 So basically, you like Audient's marketing more? :D That's kinda how it sounded like, as opposed to "i prefer it due to the sound" :P Maybe i'm cynical, but just because a gear manufacturer "says so", that doesn't always (automatically) mean it's 100% true and/or accurate. Just sayin'... :)

      I still have a bit of a pipe-dream to start doing some AvE-like TH-cam content, but centered on audio gear (ie. gear teardowns and analyses). My text-blog's sorta-kinda like that, but with obviously more limited traction :P

    • @Producelikeapro

      Haha, I have no idea that comment mean? Ha I like the Audient mic pres from using them and naturally I ask questions to find what might be different about them! I got great results from them, not pushing any one company, hence why I've featured several different interfaces. There's no reference to marketing, unfortunately I don't have the time to read it! I'm busy working, using equipment, I rely on others, like yourself to tell me this kind of information.
