LETS SEW THE MERCHANT & MILLS ELLIS PATTERN USING DUVET COVERS
I won’t bother with the costly fabric the duvet covers look brilliant ❤
There are some lovely ones in sainsburys / habitat and asda and dunelm look out for the sales, happy sewing duvets ! Hehe
I also have been using duvet covers and sheets for some time and have noticed there are very few nice designs in charity shops compared to a year ago. One of my granddaughters ,who is ,12, a big girl for her age , proudly said to an admirer of her new dress last year " that's my duvet dress my grandma made ".
@bettygraham818 I'm waiting for Asda, Sainsbury's and Dunelm sales, as they have some lovely designs in and you can sometimes get a bargain then
@@victoriamakes There is an Asda near me so I will have a look.x
@bettygraham818 good luck let us know if you find any bargains
@@bettygraham818 That's so sweet 😋
I’m upcycling a man’s shirt into a woman’s shirt. I got one for pennies at a thrift shop that’s the last stop before the landfill sold at pennies per lb. It will be my toile. Once done, if it works out and fits well, I have a much nicer men’s shirt of high quality cotton to make one I will want to wear. The nicer shirt costs me $2.50 so it will be a huge savings over a women’s storebought shirt.
Yes I’ve seen lots
Of shirts too Lately and wondered if I should make a project Out of mens shirts our charity shop sells them for around £3-£6’each so not
Such a bargain as yours hope your project
Comes out lovely ! 😀
You have inspired me to take up dress making again. I used to make all my clothes and made skirt suits when at hairdressing college. Look forward to your next project.
@soniaclarke1171
Thanks just like me,I used to make clothes when going out with my friends to the nightclub and have only just got back into it 30 years later hehe 😅 I also like using this eay to get cheap fabric, so I can get better at the skill once more. Avoiding any costly mistakes as you never know if a pattern style really suits you until it's made up Let me know what you make and enjoy your sewing journey 😊
Hi I would suggest sewing the sleeves in first and then sew the side seems of bodice and sleeves in one go. I find it’s easier to fit and sew the sleeves in first after the shoulder seams of course, and the a complete side seam of bodice and sleeve, sorry for repeating myself. Hope you can make head or tail out of my sewing ideas, good luck you’re doing fine .
Thank you I will try that next time, sleeves are tricky I'm finding, so your advice Is much appreciated
Victoria, what a lovely dress you made and so relaxing to watch you construct the pattern first from cheaper random fabric. Very enjoyable WELL DONE Thank you.
Thank you very much that’s very kind of you to comment. I’m just choosing what to make next
Hi Victoria, well done the dress looks lovely. I bought a quilt only yesterday to make myself a wrapover skirt and matching top. So I was delighted when I came across your tutorial. I'm just starting sewing lol and I'm 60 lol never to old to start learning something new. Lol anyway thank you for your video it inspired me to definitely give it a go. XxKathleen
Ooh that sounds amazing. I hope it turns out lovely. Any scraps you could make a purse too happy sewing days
Tencel fiber is somewhat comparable to rayon. Both are classified as “regenerated cellulose” fibers that are created by dissolving wood fibers with a chemical solvent. Even though Tencel has a natural origin, it is still manmade. The fiber is classified as neither “natural” nor “synthetic.”
@lizr4471 thanks there are many types of fabric and it's confusing so important to go in store to get a feel for the fabric I think
New subscriber here,I really enjoyed your video Victoria.I have been considering making a similar style dress so you popped up on my feed.I was looking at Toast dresses which have the same loose style but the prices were eye watering so I am going to try and construct one using the patterns in The act of sewing by Sonya Philip.I’m now going on a duvet / tablecloth hunt 😊
Sounds fun hope you get lucky and spot a good design. there are some lovely patterned duvet covers out there so much cheaper than a toast dress Happy sewing
Oh, you will be startled.
I am beginning an ALL new wardrobe. Also, I just got a message from an old school friend asking about an apron.
@Avotts sounds fun, and that will be amazing sewing everything from scratch. A whole new wardrobe that is planned from the beginning sounds great. The pattern I made _ video is the blue checked apron dress by dottie angel (a few months ago), would make a great apron style, too
Your video popped up in my feed this evening, and I really enjoyed it. I have made the Dottie angel dress out of a duvet and used another for a waves and wild dress. Love your chatty style. Thanks xx
Sounds great! I will look at the other pattern. 😊 Thank you for your lovely comment
Hello, I am a new subscriber. Your dress turned out fabulous. A big well done to you. Looking forward to watching more of your videos. Thank you 💞💞💞
Ah, thank you
wow Victoria the dress turned out lovely x
Thank you I'm going to make more now. It's about trying the pattern out and if you like it then you can make more I'm loving my sewing journey learning along the way and with so many lovely people willing to advise me with their tips and suggestions, the process is much more enjoyable. Happy sewing
New subscriber here. I really enjoyed your video and I am inspired to hunt out some pretty duvet covers to try new patterns with. I am also tall, so lengthening patterns has become a way of life. I usually use the lengthening line on the pattern otherwise it can throw the proportions out.
True that's what I've done with other patterns before it is the best way thanks I must remember Im getting a bit dippy lately 😀 Any pattern recommendations you've made please?
Beautiful, thank you! ❤ I plan to make the Ellis dress soon wish me luck😊
Yes I’m already making another o think it’s my favourite pattern now
Have you chosen your fabric for it what is it ? Hope it turns out lovely sure it will. Happy sewing
Consider adding ties to the sides that tie in the back. That would fix the baggy problem and make for a cute addition to the pattern.
@Palebunny nice.suggestion, 😊 Thank you
Loved your video, I’m tempted now to get out my sewing machine to have a go, I’ve not used it for about 40 years. All my old sewing patterns are from the 70s, will need some resizing lol. I used to make all my clothes and I loved it, I’ll need to have a look. I love your chatty style and showing each step of your progress, brought it all back to me. Looking forward to seeing your other projects. Thank you 😀
How fabulous I bet you have some amazing patterns have fun looking through them and deciding which to sew. That's really exciting let me know what you make 😀
I am making a toile with some fabric suitable for a petticoat , I am not a dressmaker at all trial and error with me (more error lol ). Love watching this video
Hehe that’s the way enjoy the sewing process hope your make comes out lovely 😀
Superb xx I too use duvets as practice pieces x This is fab to wear out xx
@alwaysaheart1645 Yes, it's a.great cheap way, to practice on, isn't it ? Sometimes it's wearable too, hehe
👏🏻👗
I enjoyed your tutorial, every now and then, throughout my life, I attempted sewing. Had an old machine given to me, couldn’t get it to work, everything would get knotted up. But I was determined so…… I thought it must be this old machine, I’ll treat myself to a new one and I’ll be able to make all my clothes…… couldn’t complete a single line of stitch, things coming unthreaded, things knotting up, machine seizing up. I would put it away for years at a time and then pull it out and try again…. I finally just passed it on and I know it’s getting good use. As for me, I’m all thumbs, green thumbs that is, I’ll stick to gardening. Have a lovely day, anyone reading this.
I bet you have really green fingers though, , everyone has a special talent how lovely it must be to make a garden grow enjoy yourself and treat yourself to some new seeds when the seed catalogues come out I love to watch gardeners world (UK programme) that is so inspiring but alas I don't have a large garden. Sometimes, it's just the machine - Always blame the tools haha 😄 Thank you for your comment. Have a lovely week 😊
@@victoriamakes thank you for your response, and may each day bring you lovely adventures.
@@greenthumb8266 The same to you 😄
Loved it. Also if you wanna "spice" it up you can always use a belt or make a fabric belt.
That's a great idea! THANK YOU. I now love the comfort of this full dress and am getting used to it's wide style
So pleased I came across your post as I really enjoyed watching you make this beautiful dress, it looks fabulous 😊 I also love the colour of your kitchen walls, do you mind sharing what colour it is. I’m feeling inspired to get my sewing machine back out again 😁 thank you for taking the time to share your experience
Hi Thank you, Im so glad you liked it. the pattern is a great one, isn't it? I'm starting another dress with this pattern for autumn shortly will do a quicker video for it Thank you for the compliment I painted the walls with Farrow and Ball Lulworth Blue although it needs refreshing now as its been about 4 years Thanks 😊
If I were you, and for comfort’s sake, I would increase the width of the sleeve because it appears to be a bit tight. If you do this, you would also need to increase the side seam of the bodice the same amount.
You might also take up the lower part of the bodice seam if the bodice seems too baggy.
I love the print on the duvet cover and the check goes well with it.
@sharonvogel931 That's great advice thank you 😊
For interfacing....use a duplicate facing. It came out quite cute. I really like the scallop motif on the sleeves. You can run down to the market and look fresh and put together.
Thank you yes I often do Facing instead but I must get some interfacing and try that out have you a preference between the two?
@@victoriamakes No. I was a moneyless child sewer for years. Only when I got in HS did I hear of hem tape and invisable zippers. I actually used old skirts from relatives old dresses and salvaged zippers. My home ec teacher told us to purchase an invisable zipper. mama gave me about $1.00, I bought what I had money for, a regular nylon zipper. It was my first one of them. When I got to class, Mrs Davis told me I had the wrong one. I told her, it is what we can afford. She took it back and gor the correct one. I did buy a roll of sew in type interfacing a few days ago, only because it was on clearance at WalMart. That is just as a precaution. While Ive been gathering up thrifted fabrics, Ive come up with some that are very lightweight. I might need a little help from interfacing .
living dangerously.
Haha love your early memories of your sewing days o had a horrid sewing teacher who picked on me and almost put me off sewing it is nice to find a. Bargain Walmart sounds great I must get some interfacing at some stage hehe Happy sewing what’s your next project going to be then ?
It's beautiful!
@cherylcarnes4207 Ah Thank you 😊 🙏
Really sweet result! Beautiful. I can’t see another fabric choice being cuter than that combo.
Yes I'm learning on these cheap fabrics and happy they have turned out well Thank you for your lovely comment 😊

What kind of fabric is TENCEL?
Tencel is a brand name for a few types of sustainable fabric made from wood pulp. A high-end material, it is well regarded for being soft and durable and is a popular alternative to cotton for cooling bed sheets. Care instructions for Tencel should be followed carefully, generally avoiding high heat.
Thank you for this information have you ever worked with this fabric before? Is it a common fabric widely available?
Using old duvets or sheets are great for practicing on
@@victoriamakesit is basically a specific type of viscose.
I really like tencel in mixes, like tencel+linen or tencel+wool, and any pure tencel fabric I like best a bit heavier like a twill.
@@Dolomedes81 what would you suggest making with it?
@carolh7054 definitely a cost effective way to start a new pattern first then invest later in more expenive fabric when you've got it right,
Tencelis lovely. Feels like a combination of cotton and rayon.
I must try this thank you 😊
Oh my goodness, your twill turned out top notch. A lovely dress indeed.
@Bornfree1010 Thank you please watch my other dress videos hope you like the others 😊
Just wondering why you didn’t use the lengthening cutting line on the pattern to adjust for yourself? 🌸
@@KM-xr5gg I will next time if needed
Looks beautiful
Thank you so much 💙🩵
Thank you too! 😊
Too much talking, I’m trying to concentrate on what you doing not listening to you
@@trevarnewighton2954 Ah bless you I love chatting sorry
Fantastic job well done suits you.
Thank you kindly It turned out well. you never really know beforehand. Are you sewing anything nice at present?
Love the dress. I have been thrifting fabric from opportunity shops (charity shops inAustralia) for many years. I also deconstruct clothing to remake into something else. You are very easy to listen to ❤️🇦🇺🦘
Wonderful! I'd love to go round your Op shops. What have you made lately, and have you tried any other types of fabric items? I'm thinking of doing something with quilts if I can find one
I really like that dress you are so clever well done you love it
@@carolinedean1678 wow Thank you I’m learning as I go along and hope to share my journey and chat with everyone along the way Have a great weekend 😀
Tensel is rayon
@@hollyhal1254 Thank you is it a light and drapey fabric ?
@@victoriamakes yes, very drapey. Usually has just a touch of a sheen to it.
Sounds lovely
Lovely
Thank you. Yes, it's a fab pattern I will be making more from it in the near future
Love that you sew in the kitchen and don’t have all the expensive equipment- overlocker. Your dress is lovely and I really like the coordinating fabrics
Bless you, no posh mod cons here. Hehe, just a love for sewing and chatting and making new youtube friends and having fun trying to sew new patterns and sharing tips 😊 along the way
@@victoriamakes I’ve just made a Nell dress out of a charity shop sheet. It’s huge!! Hey ho good experience for nicer fabric
@SueSmith-hq3dx ooh who makes the nell is it T& the button pattern
Was it a good pattern? Is there anything you'd do differently
@@victoriamakes yes T and the B. Lovely easy pattern. Went down
1 size. Would go down another. And take more out of the back. Lots of buttonholes which I don’t need to use it’s so big!!!
@@SueSmith-hq3dx I know what you mean my latest video due out next week is very large I thought I could cut it down the front middle and make it into a floating kimono perhaps?
You did a fabulous job I’m very impressed
