Well these are certainly more simplistic to do than the original alternative base/foundation chain I learned and I am so grateful to you for sharing them!
Both of these would be an excellent way to cast on for a knit project. Just complete either method, or even a double crochet, as long as you need it to be and then stick your needle through it in whichever fashion you want it to look like on your project and go to town; knit your heart out! It occurs to me that a row or two of this done prior to any Tunisian Stitch rows would also prevent the curl that happens.
