For me, I would start my first row after this foundation chain by inserting my hook in the more lumpy stitch, rather than the smooth V stitches, so I could have the smooth V’s showing at the bottom/beginning of my crochet project. I do love the simplicity of your technique for the foundation row. Thank you for posting.
I do like the look of this foundation chain except I agree with you on the doing the first row in the lumpy stitch. It would cover up the lumpy and leave it looking cleaner
Although this is an interesting sort of "knitting cast on", I'm not fond of the way it makes the bottom of the foundation appear. That's just my opinion. I'll stick to the "normal" chain, and working in the back "hump" for my first row for a nice clean bottom edge.
I think this should be pushed as a stretchy foundation chain, because that's its primary attribute. (I just did a little testing.) But I agree, this gives you the less attractive side of the chain. It's also incredibly slow and awkward to do, since you have to reposition the yarn twice for every stitch. Definitely not worth the result, especially since a different yarn and a looser gauge will look even worse. Oh and in knitting, that's called the 'backwards loop cast on' and is basically the most inferior cast on that exists. 😆
I think working a regular chain method and the back bumps makes the foundation row too bulky. By the same token this new method in the vid here is awkward I completely agree with you. I use the normal chain method working into the front of the loop which is perfectly fine fast and neat and that is my personal goal accomplished. You guys do it your way though. Whatever works
@@troberts1But this isnt knitting. The fact that the backwards loop she is doing is reinforced with the sc makes it less flimsy. Also need I remind you that most knitted sweater patterns call for the backwards thumb method to cast on the extra underarm stitches in sleeve working - the most important stitches in a sweater which bear the most stress and strain so I would not call it "inferior🤣" . I just thought that extra laughing emoji was unnecessary meangirl action
@@misselanys1219 "Whatever works" - exactly! Just like this video and this technique, the way I do my foundation row is just the way I do it. This video suggests another way, and you do it your way. None of these is "right" or "wrong" as long as the person doing it is happy with their work!
Thank you for sharing this technique. I have never seen this foundation before. It seems complex but thanks for taking the time to share and post. People should not leave a hate and rude comment. Please have a better life to show kindness and gratitude.. this person took their time to share this amazing technique. Thank you 🙏 ❤
This is interesting because with the usual way, when adding a border to a finished article, you can be left with just a single strand that can pull out to quite a large hole. Will definitely do a couple of samplers to try this technique. Thank you for posting it.

Ooooh, I love this and can't wait to try it. The "regular" foundation chain is always such a struggle for me to get to look nice! The music was also a great touch.
Thank you. This will be helpful to many people. I learned how to crochet my first row a long time ago. It was a game changer. I do it slightly differently, but same gist. For those of you who don’t care for it, do a different turning chain, or whatever, do what works for you or record and post a video of how you do it. Stop criticizing this creator. Geez.
Thanks I will definitely give this one a try! I always have trouble keeping the starting chain consistent, I have a tendency to crochet very tight so it's unnatural for me to keep the chain looser. I feel like this method might solve that problem
If you do a regular knit cast on and add the crochet stich like here, the bottom comes out very smooth. Its super nice for amigrumi stitch around a chain bc you dont get the single chain separation.
I like this version of the foundation double crochet since it's much easier to do and to see each stitch than the other version I learned. Now you just need the hdc and dc versions. 😊
Grazie mille!
Sometimes a pattern calls for making the foundation a row of single crochet instead of chains. This leaves a pretty edge. I use it when making clothes or anything I don't plan on putting an edge on.. Or if I am doing something that I want to use only one strand for the edging. This way of making the foundation single crochet will be much simpler and stronger. Just FYI 😊
You're making that little extra stitch much more complicated than it needs to be. There is absolutely no need to drop the yarn and change its position to make that little extra stitch.
This is the same as the chainless 2 strand foundation stitch, which is easier. Because, you don't need to keep rearranging your working yarn to do the half hitch loop pickup.
Thank you for sharing this useful foundation chain technique. It makes for a very firm foundation chain and is perfect for my Afghans. 🤟
Thank you 🎉❤

I agree I like to w9rk into the back bump too.

WOW! So much simpler and neater than the chainless foundation stitch---which I like but always seem to redo. This is great! Thanks for posting!!!!
