That comment hit me right in the feels. I had no idea of that. Tokichiro was the highlight of the story for me watching this close friend and warm heart slowly fall to corruption at the hands of Otakemaru. Was heartbreaking man. Hell just because of this I refuse to ever shift on that fight.

I love Tokichiro's character arc so much in this game, and this masterpiece of a theme is the cherry on top of it. He is born a poor man, dreaming for a better future for his country. The cutscene where he comments that "children never win in war" happens right after defeating the Azai at Odani. At the time, Oda Nobunaga had asked Hideyoshi to personally kill his own nephew and heir of the Azai clan, Manpakumaru, the kid was just 9 years old. In that moment, he realizes that his dreams of piece and happyness can't be fulfilled without sacrifice. In the game, unlike Azai Nagamasa or Shibata Katsuie, he does not use the stones out of desperation. He genuenely thinks he can control them, because he is a good person, he thinks that if he suffers, then nobody else will have to. But in the end, nobody can control that power, and he slowly becomes the origin itself of that evil he was trying to fight, being a helpless witness of his own crimes for almost two decades, waiting for his best friend to come and save him. Perhaps he was naive and overconfident, but never really evil.
To add to your point, in Nioh 1 after defeating the Toyotomi Loyalist Ishida Mitsunari, we are told via his Guardian Spirit that Hideyoshi still had dreams of peace were “the sword wouldn’t rule the land” meaning despite being the vessel of Otakemaru he never strayed from his goal. Perhaps foreshadowing his support on the last boss fight
See I'm a nerd so what makes it harder is the fact that as the game went by each region I would make my character slightly older since years would be going byso when this fight happened and you see these two old friends fighting after being together for like 40 years you can imagine it kind of hit hard.
Given that you can alter your character's appearance at any moment, I personally put in that extra step of making my character age and look older/more experienced as time went on. Added so much to the game for a few extra steps on my end. I feel like given that Hide is part yokai that they age far slower than normal humans, though. Also, @UltimateShamrock Part of it was waiting for an opportune moment to effectively assassinate the emperor of Japan (which would be a monumental task in of itself) and part of it is travel on foot and needing to keep a low profile.
@@TheOnlyLonelyBoy I couldn't agree more infact in my silly head Canon when you gain the yokai slaying sword and take in all the amrita in to restore it my headcanon meant that it made the character regain youth cause by the end of the game 63 years(before skip being 47 years I think) or so went by since the story started till the end. Idk there's just something fun about being able to do that
i do exactly the same thing, it makes this battle more dramatic to see two old close friends fighting to the death. i always pictured Hide to be around late teens (18-19) in the beginning of the game and by the time you fight tokichiro a second time its been roughly 40 years so hide is now in his late 50s.
Seriously one of the best musical themes in gaming history; this one track more than made up for Nioh 1's limited themes. It works perfectly with what a powerful scene this is; two decades-old friends who were driven apart by powers beyond their understanding, finally reunited as enemies.
There were plenty of tracks in Nioh 1, all of which were good and in Nioh 2 they add a bunch of good tracks. I also love that they reuse the impactful tracks from Nioh 1.

That's a bit of a stretch. This theme is good, but I'd hardly call it one of the best in all of video games. I agree nioh 2's ost is a massive improvement over 1's, but I've still listened to far better game soundtracks. Bloodborne's music for example far surpasses both Nioh 1 and 2 as far as I'm concerned
That moment when you finish the fight, sever the horns, and he falls to the ground being his old self again, holding his hand as he dies really got me to tear up. Tokichiro was never evil. He was just a man following his dream, only to lead to his end by our blade. It is sad because we had no choice but to kill him. He died but we freed him from Otakemaru's grip. He'd never want to hurt us on purpose. We were his best friend, and he smiled in his last moment holding your hand as you held his. He was happy to be with you until the end
One of the things I absolutely loved this fight for, alongside the story behind it, is the call forwards in his moveset towards the Toyotomi Hodeyori fight in Nioh 1’s Bloodshed’s End dlc, specifically his occasional use of fire and lightning embedded into his swords.
It took me a moment to realize the fight takes place next to the same Sakura tree where you first met him. The same place he saved you from being consumed by your own demonic nature, and where your partnership was formed. And now...it is your turn to save him.
And now having just played it, realised that means he built a palace on the spot that meant the most to not just him but our friendship, the guy was still hoping for us to come save him, believing in us until the end, even while possessed
I was pretty bummed that they backpedaled in the ending and just said 'lol it's ok tho he's normal again' it really killed the entire character arc imo. It should have been more tragic than it was.
@@gg2fan they did a joseph joestar on us and i loved it. He also got to redeem himself by saving the protagonist. And we finally have a final reunion with the three of us. I loved it alot
@@gg2fan It explained everything in the cinematic after you beat him at the cherry tree. He was so worried about his dream that he lost sight of reality and what was important to him. He allowed himself to be corrupted by Otakemaru just like Saito Yoshitatsu, Azai Nagamasa, and Saito Toshimitsu. Only after defeating him the 2nd time and removing Otakemaru's direct influence at that point(cutting off the horns) did he realize this. The realization was too late for him to do anything about, and he died. He was thrust many years into the future after Maria revives him, but she immediately realizes that the true Tokichiro is not the massive, evil overlord that she was led to believe just like Kelley in the first game with Nobunaga. He immediately went to aid his struggling best friend, he apologized and visited with Mumyo and the Protagonist, and proceeded to pass on to the afterlife. His life was over, and his time had passed; just like Nobunaga.
@@SheanWalsh46 Did you not catch the trend this series has when people are defeated? Nearly always they speak with you, share a guardian spirit, then either die or move aside. These moments are the exposition and reflection of how the characters truly feel. Tokichiro is no different than anyone preceding him, he put in one good deed to his old friend before passing on. Even after all he learned about the destructive power of the Spirit Stones, he still used one to help bring your character back into reality just like the first level. He did it just for you. It didn't undo any of the things he did, he merely can't cause any harm or good as he has no power. The world moved on after his passing. As far as Otakemaru goes, you fought him the entire game. He was part of Saito Yoshitatsu, Azai Nagamasa, Saito Toshimitsu (Ryomen Sukuna), and the second fight with Tokichiro; they all had his purple horns. Kashin Koji was Otakemaru in disguise and was who killed your character's mother. He interrupted your mother's Otakemaru story about the Sohayamaru and tried killing you both to prevent the sword ever being a threat to him.
@@gg2fan They really didnt backpeddle him, they just gave him one last burst of redemption at the very end of the game before he died for good. He still absolutely committed all those atrocities whether under the influence of the demon or not and they dont treat it like he didnt, he still willingly chose the pursuit of power regardless of the demon's influence or not.
@@KhazuAMV I think from software music is still vastly superior but the improvements nioh 2 made to its soundtrack were fantastic, it's definitely good now, lot of great tracks.
@@sadsheep A lot of From's music sounds really cheap even if the composition is good though, don't know if it's bad mixing or fake instruments a lot of times. The only big exception is Bloodborne, really.

I was so mad during my first fight cause it glitched and no matter what i did whether o restarted the game or reinstalled it he just stood their and didn't attack or swap phases.

The main character is a yokai, he is a demon (albeit half). But you can age it yourself.
