"For every look at yourself, take ten looks at Christ.” Pastor Paul Washer often includes this powerful line in his sermons, and it resonates with me. I used to consider shifting to Psychology in college, thinking it would aid my healing process. However, after listening to Pastor Jonny’s message in this podcast, I’ve realized that all I truly need is not to look inward but to look upward to the Lord Jesus Christ-the One who rescues me from the trap of over-introspection and leads me to the cross. God bless you, pastor Jonny. I praise and thank God for your honesty and bravery.

An excellent podcast, and such a huge issue in today’s world. I’ve been so blessed that anxiety has never affected me like others. I think that despite extreme difficulties in my life, I have always known that God is with me, and that was and always will be my inner calm. No matter whatever came or comes (and I’m that almost 63 yr old you speak of, lol) I have that deep inner perfect peace, (praise God). I do also give thanks to my earthly Father because I know he was the same way, and he showed me Christ as a child. Thank you for this truth today.

“Be anxious for NOTHING, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, present your requests to God.” Philippians 4:6.

This was an excellent intro! Really looking forward to the book! Would you guys be willing to address spiritual anxiety and assurance of salvation in a future episode?
    Thanks for considering!

My adult daughter suffers from crippling anxiety at times. Most is due to health issues but anything else that occurs sends her into a tailspin. It makes me feel helpless because I cannot do anything to get her through this except pray. She has insight but is unable to manage it on her own. She has mentioned she feels it is sometimes a spiritual attack or that God is mad at her. Anxiety is fuel for doubt. She is definitely a believer but struggles with her faith because of all the trials she has suffered through.

Anxiety comes from not believing there is forgiveness for sin. Speaking from experience.

@@phetmoz It's funny you mention that because she has stated that to me on many occasions. She wonders about her salvation and if she is going to heaven. I too struggled with this until I realized there is absolutely nothing I can do to earn my salvation. I fall short every single day. Jesus paid the price for my sin on the cross and because I love Him and believe He is who he says He is, I get to go to heaven!

My adult daughter struggles like this as well. I didn’t know how to help her but I’ve learned to continue to point her to Jesus.

@@privone2001 if she wonders, she's not saved. She's putting faith in her own actions. You're supposed to KNOW that you're saved. How? Because it's all on Jesus, and nothing on you to earn forgiveness into heaven.

@@phetmoz Hi there! I would respectfully disagree. Sometimes this recurrent doubt is indeed a sign someone is not saved yet. Sometimes, however, this doubt and anxiety is due to our fallen flesh, trials, or spiritual attack. Many saints have struggled deeply with assurance of salvation. John Bunyan deeply struggled in this area, and he actually wrote Pilgrim’s Progress in prison for his faith, and while partially experiencing doubt again in this area, I believe. Also, 1 John is written at least partially so that we might know that we are saved- which implies that people would at times be prone to losing confidence in this area. Paul also writes to the worried Thessolonians in 1 Thessalonians to encourage them that they are indeed in the faith and have no reason to fear the coming Day of the Lord. Jesus also says in John 6:37-39:
“All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out. For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day.”
Many theologians/pastors wiser than I (again, Bunyan, Dane Ortlund, etc) would argue readily that these promises of Jesus are there in the Bible because God knew that humans would struggle with assurance of salvation, the incredible good news of grace, etc. I’ve also heard John MacArthur say similarly that assurance can be lacking for many reasons for a season, and that this does not necessarily mean someone is not saved.
So I don’t mean to be argumentative in any way, but as someone who struggled with this cyclically and profoundly in the past, I think it would best and most edifying to not immediately announce judgment on anyone’s salvation, but instead, offer Scripture, encouragement, and prayer. And again, I say this as someone who has struggled greatly in this area and who now has deep assurance of salvation based on the work of Christ alone and the Scriptures.
Lastly, I will also say that scrupulosity and religious OCD are very real things- due to a variety of factors. Not simply unbelief. Just my two cents ❤

Don’t you think that the over stimulation of social media and world wide news coming through phones 24/7 are main cause of anxiety of our young people? They live in the phones constantly comparing themselves to others and facing all the constant bad news of the world……. But agreed- Gods character is the solution.
    Thank you
