Chris was so cool there are stories of him and the band touring in Australia and hearing someone playing their songs in a garage they walked in and gave the kids a 40minute lesson on how to play their songs. Now that's fucking rock royalty.

@@ryanedwards4512 it is its in an interview somewhere. I don't recall which one. He speaks about it as if it was nothing but to those kids it would of meant the world. He is just a nice guy. I don't think music and fame ever went to his head.
It's not a long interview bit and it belongs to an interview if I recall is 60minutes long. If I find it again I will post the link. Or if anyone else finds it post the link.

Fun fact: Soundgarden was named after the sound garden. A musical art installment in a Seattle park. It consists of poles with organ pipes at the top of them that play melodic tones when wind passes through them.

I went to a free concert Pearl Jam gave in the park where that sculpture is at in 1992. It was called "drop in the park" Eddie climbed the stage rafters it was crazy man... it was an incredible show. it was all free including buses and food and water. Seattle bands were amazing man.

I was a kid in high school in the late '80s whose first introduction to their music was a song off of their 1989/1990 album "Louder Than Love" via its official video which aired on MTV's Headbangers Ball and/or 120 Minutes (the 2-he. genre-specific weekend segments devoted to videos by hard rock/metal and alternative/modern rock acts of the day, respectively). Since the bands coming out of Seattle at the time were hard to categorize for MTV and radio station content formatters of the day, videos by Soundgarden, Nirvana, Pearl Jam and so on were featured on both platforms where previously no cross-pollination occurred.

I love the choice of words that Dave uses as he describes Chris Cornell with Soundgarden. He always seems to be loyal in a professional way. When I saw him in the audience, cheering for Chris Cornell with Soundgarden, I found that to be noble of Dave.

evanisovich Hey evanisovich: I have read some different theories and speculations regarding Chris Cornell's passing. However, I can't give you anymore information about what really happened. As far as his head being bashed in and 7 broken ribs, I read about something similar to that description. I've seen some other circumstantial evidence, but I'm not in a position to commit myself! On the other hand, you seem to know more about this. Therefore, I'm not going to spend my precious time with your rubbish. Due to the love and respect that I have for Christ Cornell, RIP. and without further adieu, I want to remain in prayer. P E A C E

      @LisaAHavekost 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

evanisovich He actually had nine broken ribs, it was in the autopsy report, I'm sorry that I don't have a link to it. Also, the paramedic in communication with the hospital reported the head trauma when asking for permission to call it and a time of death. This is on TH-cam somewhere, I think it's actually titled as the 911 call although it is a paramedic on the scene.

Replace Radiohead with Tool and it's the same for me...discovered Soundgarden's first EP my freshman year in college (it was released in the fall prior). Then came the first listening of Jane's Nothing Shocking (which happened to coincide with a first experience with mind-altering substances...tell me there's no such thing as fate), and shortly thereafter Ultramega OK and Nirvana's Bleach dropped. My head was spinning, literally and figuratively. What an amazing time. Equally amazing is that I actually remember some of it, lol.

@@MrShahid0072 Idk man. Nirvana was my favorite band when I was growing up. When In Utero came out that's all I listened to. But the older I get, the more i love AiC and Soundgarden. Maybe I just got burned out on Nirvana? I feel like AiC and Soundgarden wrote more intricate, thought out tunes.

@@OGStinkywizzleteats I think Soundgarden are great but AIC has a body of work I don't really care for. Kurt had a knack for vocal melody. The songs were not profound or anything or aspired to depict pain like Aic but they were musically just better IMO. Aic don't have the tunes. They have great instrumentation and a passionate vocalist but their tunes are boring to me. In the end they are obviously incomparable and are just lumped into one genre for marketing sake. But Nirvana is iconic to me and yeah time passes and you just don't feel that strongly for any artist like you use to. It's just how out minds are wired. I personally think Radiohead is the ultimate band of the 90s and none of the other bands come even to close to the beauty that is OK Computer. I like Aic..I am just not a huge fan. I don't listen to Nirvana anymore either but I do realize our minds seek novelty and the old stuff we once thought was great would never seem that great in the present. So there is always a bias when talking about music like that. But yeah.. Nirvana were exceptional and history will always remember them IMO.

@@MrShahid0072 I can see your point. Although AiC spoke to my soul. Maybe it's because I struggled with addiction, and that was a large part of Aic's lyrical content. Their vocal harmonies definitely don't appeal to everyone. As far as Radiohead goes, I'm in agreement. They are fantastic musicians. I would add STP to this list as well. They wrote catchy and very listenable music as well. They didn't get the credit due at the time because they weren't Seattle boys, and came at the tail end of grunge.

The fact that Dave Grohl actually wants to brave the fans and enjoy Chris Cornell in concert like a real fan speaks volumes about Chris' talent. I'm sure Dave could have been back stage ..... but he wanted to be front and center and jam like the rest of us.... i don't blame him.

"Much more melodically sophisticated than anything any of the other Seattle bands were doing" I know it just comes down to opinion but how can you honestly say that when the same year Jar of Flies by Alice In Chains came out? Listen to Nutshell and tell me that it's not one of the most melodically sophisticated songs you've ever heard.

Not sure if I can nail down if Alice or soundgarden to me are more important, but I can see what Dave was saying. Look at how all over the place superunknown is. Fresh Tendrils? Did that sound like anything else? Alice's EPs threw everyone for a loop for sure but didn't have the crazy time signature changes and differing song structures like soundgarden.
Badmotorfinger and Dirt are two of THE most important albums of all time to me so I'm not biased by any means to one band over the other.

I started listening to grunge music hardcore in early 1994 when I was 11 years old and grew up worshipping the Seattle scene along with all other good 80s and 90s bands. So glad I got to see most of the bands live and meeting a lot of them too. Dave Grohl is a great humble guy and I love that he’s talking about soundgarden in such a positive way. Although I truly believe Alice and chains and Nirvana were just as good as Soundgarden. Either way music will never be that good again. So glad we have it forever. Thank you to all the great musicians dead and alive who made it for us to enjoy.

Anybody at Lollapalooza 96 in Pownal VT ? Soundgarden did black hole sun and the sky went black and thunderheads rolled in. I was near the big lighting fixture, center stage out 2 or 300 ft. Thought it was going to be struck by lightning. That band was outstanding, Black hole not my favorite tune, but it was magical that day. I remember being awestruck by Cornel's voice. It was real. All of that amazing majesty from the albums was real all he had to do was open up and let it come ripping out. A legendary rock singer I will miss.

This is the difference between Dave and someone like Kurt or Billy Corgan. Dave isn't at all insecure about himself so he's not afraid to spread love to other musicians. He is arguably the most talented out of any of them but isn't so judgemental. I see Kurt as the Regina George of grunge and Dave is Gretchen.
