You know adventure people had ball joint heads before GIJoe. And I had my childhood boat left over so I bought like 4 adventure people lots and my 4 year old daughter loves them. We also used to play with them with our GIJoes. I was going to make some customs from them. But I will with the broken one. lol since I bought so much.
I had the majority of the 80’s joes as a kid. None of us knew about the flag but when I showed other kids the killer whale our eyes would bug out of our heads. I remember begging to bring it in the bath tub, it would float but our tub was so small it couldn’t turn around
@@ToyKennections I heard rumour that Hasbro was considering coming out with a COBRA version of the W.H.A.L.E. and the U.S.S.Flagg before the line was canceled. Ohh, to think what might have been…
I was sick as a child and went through a lot of medical procedures. I was a huge GI Joe fan and when the surgeries started I insisted on having 2 action figures with me. Flint, and The Baroness. I was a child and scared and wanted help from both sides of the only thing I knew. The hospital actually let me keep them on either side of me during all 4 procedures sealed in bags. I knew Flint was a total badass and would protect me, but if that failed, The Baroness could call in major reinforcements from Cobra. And as a young boy I wanted to be Flint and let’s face it I was in love with Baroness. Was weird I guess but I just tried to hold on to what I knew
I grew up in the 70's and 80's. I was a Cobra fan, but my favorite Joe was Flint. Glad to see another Flint fan. My favorites in order were Firefly, Storm Shadow, Crimson Guard and Flint.
Great video as usual, Ken! Funny how some of the proposed releases for '95 actually got released in the Joes' comeback in '97 and the following years. For example, you mentioned the possible re-release of the MCC in '95, but Hasbro actually re-released it under the SpyTroops line in 2003. The one big-ticket item I always wished they produced was the train. That could've been a game-changer as it would've offered many toyetic features and a whole new feel for the line. It could've come with an engineer and maybe a tillerman. I always imagined them offering extra tracks like the weapons and accessories packs. Heck, it may have just won some Joe enthusiasts back and attracted some new ones!
Yup - when i got my MCC years ago i had to check and make sure it wasn't the 2003 version (nothing wrong with that one but the store's price reflected the 1987 one). I guess the fact they made it in 03 is further proof they considered it in the 90s after all 🙌
Great video! That Arctic Assault Team set box art you showed at the end is a set I definitely would've scooped up back then. I can only hope the Polar Bear would've actually been included.
Awesome Video man! so many cool figures and vehicles we never got. I would love to see some of these made in the modern day. Chad made a cool custom of the EEL I would loove to see more !!!!!!!
I see an opportunity here for Super 7, to continue where Hasbro left off. Would be awesome if they would take some of these ideas into production with their new o-ring line. Great video!
And if your partner with fresh retro, you could design the panels how you want the walls for the base and you can get it done way faster and then it’s compatible with fresh retro. That’s a cool idea. I hope you use it and even talk to call longbow Troy and Doug about it And Mikey And I’m sure Steve would like it too plus you’d save on costs because they already have everything for fresh retro so be easier to design faster then you could change it around as much as you want because it is click in So it gives way more options on what you wanna do with your base and you could always add more and make it as large as you want and order more and more
As always, incredible video! A great learning experience. The trend was going to be reimaginings of the same characters, I see. There were few and far between new characters as the 90s evolved, so it's clear even back then they were clinging to the nostalgia and lore set by the core characters of the 80s. Ken, you do yourself proud and the research is stellar as per usual

To this day, I still love the GIJOE franchise as it is so rich with content and lore that you could do a lot with it. Why there aren't any real good PC games with this license is beyond me. Imagine a turn-based game, like XCOM, but GIJOE. Where GIJOE went weird is when I started growing out of it. It's like they were desperate to come out with something more colorful and more outrageous, but lost the plotline. What I would have liked to see is more variants of existed characters instead of coming up with new character all the time. Like, get's get a arctic team put together and make them look like the same joes with new outfits and weapons.
That's funny Barroness would have been a revival for us at the time. Battle corps was wicked cool. Helmets, dogs and more.. A Barroness for the guys who never had one. Oh and a kamakura introduction... Whoa
The new Characters Sureshot and Bulldozer like Ice Cream Soldier release in 94 were created so Hasbro would have the toy trademark for the names of DC Comics SGT Rock characters since WB had been working on a SGT Rock movie and Mattel was trying to get the toy rights for said movie. That movie is also the reason why Sgt Savage line was created as to the part of the RAH toyline to directly compete with the movie line that never came out. Movie still being in development by 1994 is why Sgt Savage got the greenlit for release after all the toys it was in Development with Between January of 93 and July of 94 where cancelled.
Another excellent video. 92 through 94 was my collecting heyday. I definitely would have liked to have been able to get the Baroness, Bulldozer, and Sure Shot. For instance; How many different versions of Duke or other main characters did we need? By that point all of the serious kid collectors like me already had at least one version of a main character. The new figures would have had to be incredible for me to buy them considering that I had some of the excellent versions from the 80s found at yard sales. Also, although the Sea Wolf and the Battle Station are awesome concepts, the prices would have been exorbitant and out of reach for most kids until they went on sale. The adult collectors weren't quite ready to go all in on GI JOE for at least another decade. Many of these figures and vehicles would have sold on clearance and hung around on the secondary market for decades. At worst, it might have frightened Hasbro away from innovating with G.I. 1995 would’ve been hard for G.I. I just bought a few parts lots so I can make a custom ATC into a APC mobile medical unit.
