One 1970s book, whose name and author I won't mention, called it an original song. Ha! I already knew Rick(y) didn;t write it (he DID write his 1972 finale, GARDEN PARTY, his "happy" tribute to his oldies, and had the last laugh on his fans when that turned gold.RIP RN, 1940-1985)

Being a huge Rick Nelson fan ever since I was a little kid watching Ozzie and Harriet, I always wondered about the person "Jerry Fuller" whose name kept appearing beneath the song title of so many of Rick's hits on the "45s" as being the writer. With the internet, I have learned a lot about him the last few years. but this is still a fascinating story to me. I am glad he was able to get those songs into Rick's hands as they still remain some of my most favorite song sof all time.

As I remember it (and without digging out my old collection of singles or looking it up on Google), "Travellin' Man" was on a double-A-side 45, coupled with "Hello Mary-Lou" - or at least it was in the UK. "Hello Mary-Lou" was written by Gene Pitney, in fact, if memory serves.
Many thanks for uploading this little gem.

One of his earlier recordings on the Hi-Tone label "Once In This World" was later released on Challenge 59052 as the B-side to "Betty My Angel" but retitled "Memories of You" They changed the lyrics but the melody is much the same! Cheers to you Jerry, everything you recorded was really, really exceptional!

I met Jerry at a concert I was on with him & a few others. The Ricky nelson group (with James Burton) was backing us all up. 'Travelin' Man' had already been a major hit and I performed it many times. So I begged Jerry to let me sing it with the band (He was going to do it). He said Okay. I couldn't believe it! So I sang it. They sounded just like the record...

Wow, what a great story about the song Travelin' Man. I used to live right around the corner from this park in the 1980's and would walk by it all the time on my way to the post office. I wonder if Sam Cooke ever found out that the song was written for him. Also, I would love to know J.W. Alexander's reaction to finding out that the song he threw in the trash can became a big hit for Ricky Nelson. By the way, that Wrecking Crew documentary is outstanding.

I would have loved to hear Sam Cooke's version. I think that Sam Cooke was the better singer, as he put more feeling in a song than Ricky Nelson. Both were good at what they did. To bad we never got to hear more of Sam Cooke's singing past 1964, because he was murdered. Much has been hidden about his death.

It speaks very well of Jerry Fuller that it never dawned on him what kind of idiotic madness would have ensued had Sam Cooke, a Black man, recorded a song in the early 1960’s about having girls, including a lily white one, as his love interests. Maybe Sam Cooke realized it and that’s why he trashed the record. I have my doubts his record company would have ever released it or allowed him to even record it! It was a VERY different time back then.

I think if Sam knew about the song he would have sing it anyway.🎵🎶🎵 I don't think that his manager ever showed him (Sam) he just throw it in the trash. Sam never seen the Lyrics but if he did he probably would have Singed anyway. But I get what you're saying 👌
