  • Removing the smog pump and related parts. No kit here, just a shorter serpentine belt. Making more room in the engine bay, and freeing a tiny tiny bit of horsepower. Fact is, it was already partially disconnected, so lets pull it out!

    nice work, I just put the motor back in my 85. Check to see if your tensioner has 3 keyway holes in the back. If your on #2 or 3 you might be able to get it to the top hole to alleviate some pressure. I obsessed about my 92 notch engine bay cleanup! I've got it down to darn near nothing. Keep up the good work and videos!!

    • @HOUSEOFDULA
      @HOUSEOFDULA  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      On the cut part...where I cut the mounting flange from the pipe, take that mounting flange and flip it, mount the back side to the heads. The back side is flat so flipping it just blocks the hole...just be sure to clock it right so that it covers ALL of the hole...you'll know, your hear an exhaust leak if you dont.

    Hey I know this video is pretty old but hopefully I get a quick response anyways do you know if 351 and 302 use the same belt lengths and do you know what size belt I would use if I have no smog pump and no ac thanks :)

    • @HOUSEOFDULA
      @HOUSEOFDULA  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I really dont know exactly. I know the 302 front accessory will not completely interchange because the higher deck height. As far as the length goes. Best thing to do is is use a old longer belt and route it, cut to length so that the ends butt up together then measure the length but add an inch to compensate for the tensioner. Then order that length, the length and it being 8 rib it typically in the part number of the belt.

    HOUSE OF DULA Just curious, after smog delete was there check engine light showing or idol issues? Please help, I'm working on a 91 coupe & really want to dump the smog pump, but don't want to retune my car. Thanks

    • @HOUSEOFDULA
      @HOUSEOFDULA  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Removing it wont cause any idle issues, or a need to retune. It night cause a check engine light, because when the valve open fresh air into the cats the O2's are expecting it...if they dont see it it will throw a code. But it wont cause drivability issues. My fox was already throwing that code because the smog crossover tube in the heads are usually clogged with carbon, so its not working anyway. Its fine to remove it. Your idle issue is something else...removing the smog wont fix it or make it worse. Another thing to be cautious about is the cats. If they are 100% stock, they need fresh air from the smog pump to stay cool and not overheat and melt (likely are already, again this stuff usually is clogged with carbon with high miles)...I took mine off knowing soon id be going with a catless exhaust system....long story short...it made ZERO difference in the way it ran when I removed mine.

    • @HOUSEOFDULA
      @HOUSEOFDULA  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Its off too. Engine compartment looks 1000 times cleaner with the emission stuff gone. But, I kept it all in case I ever wanted to put it all back to stock. But, lets be honest, the stock engine was shot and the replacement engine will likely never have smog stuff put back on. Car is not original color, floor pans replaced, subframe connectors welded in, brakes, suspension are long gone in favor for the 5 lug...its far from stock, but not at all hacked up. Parts put on it all make it a better more modern, safer car to drive.

    • @HOUSEOFDULA
      @HOUSEOFDULA  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. The 86 efi cars didnt even have a check engine light, youd have to scan it, and the codes doesnt change the performance at all. For 87+ cars, it would be annoying to see the light on all the time. Youd want to use a plug or like most tune it out.

    • @HOUSEOFDULA
      @HOUSEOFDULA  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I bet it will be fine as long as your tension has movement both up and down. If you bottom out the tension pulley you could snap a belt. My belt at 84.5 was pretty tight getting on, every car might be a lil different but I'd bet that belt length would be perfect.

    What about the EGR after removing the vacuum system?

    • @HOUSEOFDULA
      @HOUSEOFDULA  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It will trip a code, but not hinder or change performance, or keep it from passing inspections (Texas these are classis and do not need an emmissions test). My cars smog tubes we're blocked so the system wasn't working anyway, so I just got rid of it.

    • @HOUSEOFDULA
      @HOUSEOFDULA  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Likely not. Best thing to do, remove the pump, then use a string and run it how the belt would run. Then measure string and subtract about 1" to compensate for the tensioner. Did this on my new trick flow motor and it worked perfect.

    • @brucemanly7857

  • @bigdaddy1267
    @bigdaddy1267 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    MIke, you can also just cap off the crossover tube with a 3/4" cap.. For the belt, as long as the falt side is facing the water pump pulley, it is turning it counter clockwise. Last- make sure you dont have the belt too tight or you will wear out the bearings in the water oump prematurely. Good job though

    • @HOUSEOFDULA
      @HOUSEOFDULA  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good point about the flat side of the belt, this is true! just never thought about it that way. I wanted the tube out as well, just looks a little cleaner. As far as having the belt too tight, the tensioner, being under spring pressure should it should maintain an even amount of tension on the belt. As long as you have free movement in both directions, spring is not worn, pulley bearing is fine, there should be nothing to adjust that would make the belt tight.

      Gotcha....Yeah your right that diagram does not have a length for it. What I would do is take the old belt, cut it....route it then mark and cut again so the ends butt up againt each other. Then lay it out in a long line and measure it, add .5 to 1" for the tensioner. This should work for you or get you very very close. You might have to make a trip or two to the auto parts store. Remember, the PN usually indicates the belts length.

    • @HOUSEOFDULA
      @HOUSEOFDULA  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes, likely. PArt of your emmission system opens the solenoid to send fresh air to the cats...the O2's would be expecting it so will throw a fault. But will NOT cause the engine to change its performance at all. And, this can be tuned out. For me...86's dont have a check engine light, so one would never even know without running codes..My car is emission exempt in Texas as well.. Because of carbon buildup I would have had he light on anyway. The entire emmisions system would have to be replaced or cleaned up...Or, remove it all like I did and make more room under that hood. Not a rookie question at all. I wondered the same thing.

      Trick Flow. If I keep the stock block, they will be compatible with my flat tops..If I rebuild the engine or replace they are still a good head.

    While you were there eliminate EGR valve?

    • @HOUSEOFDULA
      @HOUSEOFDULA  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you do, on a stck ECU it will throw codes. But...I cold have easily just went ahead and removed it as well during the smog pump removal if I wanted. My trick Flow motor I put in, I eliminated EGR completely.

      I know this is old but after you deleted the vapor canister do you get a fuel smell from the tank? And did you just leave that line open?

    If I do this can you comment on what will happen to the cats? I heard they can be ruined from this or should I even care?

    • @HOUSEOFDULA
      @HOUSEOFDULA  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is true. I didnt care to be honest because I dont need to pass smog on it and I know Id replace the exhaust anyway. BUT something to consider, the older CAT technology needed the air to help them do their job. I also heard with the air pump they will over heat and crack up internally, or at WORST block exhaust. Heres the deal though, I almost guarantee yoours isnt working anyway, like mine wasn't. The exit from the back of the heads we're completely blocked off with carbon.

    • @timzzz9963
      @timzzz9963 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for that. I intend to keep the stock engine and theres no emissions tests where I live. Will work on smog removal once I have to park it for the year due to road salt.

    Hey Mike when you do that head swap you might as well do a cam too otherwise you're gonna be upset afterwards when you go to do a cam later. I'm just speaking from experience and food for thought.

      @HOUSEOFDULA  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good point. I already thought about it. One thing leads to another and next thing I know im putting in a new engine!. Honestly by the time, the heads are off, the intake is off, the front end is off for the cam, there with be a bare block and oil pan left in the car anyway!

      Mike Dula I know what you mean. One thing always leads to another. I can't wait to see more video sir. I'm almost done with my son's 89 hatch enginebay. I installed the scott rod fab panels but had to stop right before body filler sanding and primer cause I got tasked with my second tour to korea so I'm literally living thru your videos right now until January 2018 when I return home.

    • @HOUSEOFDULA

      +Kevin Knapp - yes but as long as 92 is emission exempt in your county / state. Pulling the pump will make it not pass the smog test

      Thank you very much! I'm in Oklahoma so no worries about emissions. I'm in the process of rebuilding it and didn't want to buy the pulley that deletes it.

      All this depends on your combination, never ALWAYS a 1 size fits all. Im running an underdrive set in this video, which would make the belt shorten than a guy running stock pulleys.
